Michael Barrett Traded to Padres (1 Viewer)

Footballguy
just heard from buster olney on mike & mike in the morning that michael barrett was traded to the padres.

he doesnt know for who yet but thats what he said.

Saw this coming a mile away. Either Zambrano or Barrett was getting moved after the fight. Surprised it took this long.

Interested in seeing details of the trade.

I expect MANY more trades will be going down shortly.

Rumor in the Cubs blog world is that it is Barrett and Eric Patterson for Bowen and Linebrink. Don't quote me on that as it could just be speculation.

Edit: I'd also like to add that if this is the trade, it's a horrible trade for the Cubs. Patterson will be a nice player, and we are dealing Barrett at his lowest possible value.

Is Linebrink good? I don't follow the Padres much...He looks like a setup man... Eric Patterson is definitely good. I hope he wasn't included in the deal.

I don't think Linebrink or Patterson were included. Sorry for the misinformation.

Edit: Ugh, now Local sports radio is acting like Linebrink is included. Whatever.

From Rotoworld...

The San Diego Tribune is reporting the Padres have acquired Michael Barrett for reserve catcher Rob Bowen and low Single-A outfielder Kyler Burke.

Bowen has batted .268 with two home runs in 82 at-bats for the Padres this season. Burke was batting .211 with one home run in 213 at-bats with the Padres' Single-A team in Fort Wayne.

SD can get a boatload for Linebrink with all these bad bullpens around the league. And yes, Linebrink is very good. Probably a closer next year if not sooner.

It sounds like they just gave him away. He is a pretty good catcher and a fiery leader. One of my favorite guys. Koy Hill has been doing a pretty decent job lately, maybe they feel he will be able to do it everyday.

I believe Bowen will take over as the regular catcher, he has put up solid numbers in limited duty over the last two years. He could be a guy who breaks out with more playing time.

Henry Blanco will be healthy soon, and I expect him to be starting. Which really makes this move seem like just a way to dump Barrett. Too bad, I like the guy.

I don't think Blanco is going to be healthy anytime soon. Look for Bowen to get a majority of the time at C.

I think it was a move to get rid of Barret, but if the Cubs were confident in Hank White being ready they would have went for pitching instead of another catcher.

How much is Barrett's salary? Yankees couldnt throw something together for him? Im getting tired of this Wil Nieves experiment.

Bowen is garbage, IMO. He was in the Twins org. for awhile. They gave away Barrett.

Bowen started in the Twins organization and was a strong prospect until it became apparent that Mauer was going to be the catcher for the Twins. They had him play 1B for a while as a way to get him up to the majors as well, but then some guy named Morneau arrived.

Switch hitter that I think would be an excellent #2 catcher or a decent #1.

(I don't think Barrett is that bad of a fielding catcher, is he? I just like him for the right cross he gave A.J. last year.)

theres a reason why barrett was given away..he was terrible behind the plate this year..

 he's not that good.
:goodposting: But he's good as far as catchers go. He's struggling at the plate but I thikn the Cubs will miss him.

As for Koyie Hill doing well, when? He only catches Zambrano and everybody knew Z was going to turn it around. I think Hill benefited from good timing. He's hitting .150 too.

Maybe Barrett can get in a fight with Peavy. Aside from that, I don't see this trade as anything significant. He's a decent bat for a catcher, but his defensive weakness behind the plate detracts from that a bit. Still, Towers is a good GM - at worst this deal probably doesn't hurt the Pads, at best it turns out nicely in their favor.
