Middle Aged Whites - What's your experience? (1 Viewer)

I live in a relatively affluent neighborhood in the Tampa area.  Many of my neighbors are either older, white empty-nesters or first or second whites that work in the medical field.  I try not to paint people with a broad brush, but based on my experience, I've noticed some reoccurring themes.

1.  They're generally not social people, at least outside of their own networks.

2.  The women look miserable.  A lot of the time they walk alone with very stoic looks on their faces.  If you drive past them on their walks, there's a high likelihood they won't acknowledge your existence.

3.   A specific incident, and maybe this speaks to #1, but I have an 8 year old son who doesn't have playmates in the neighborhood.  Over Christmas, we realized that a girl in his class lives two houses down.  I encouraged my son to ride bikes with her and her brothers whenever I'd see them outside.  A few iterations of that went by before I told him to knock on their door to see if they could play.  The father told my son that he's not allowed to knock on their door, nor are his kids allowed to knock on our door.   Uhhhh, ok.

I'm curious to know of other's experiences and if there's anything about our cultures that you think has led to my experiences.

I live in a relatively affluent neighborhood in NJ. I have not experienced anything like you have. People are very friendly (young and old) and I've often engaged in conversations with people on the street while walking my dog or otherwise.

I'd say the large majority of our town is white, but their are plenty of Asian, Indian and a few Latin (South American) and Black families as well. Maybe that's the difference?

I'm actually amazed at the diversity in the public schools and how friendly and "good" all the kids seem and how they all get along so well.

I'm not a super social guy myself but I do get along with just about everyone in our town when I see them at school functions, on the soccer field, etc.

I'm not sure if this really helps - but just based on anecdotal evidence of my experiences and your initial post it just looks like you're unlucky with your immediate neighbors. I wouldn't call it a "white middle aged problem".

The guy who's door you kid knocked on just seem like a weirdo.

This board has gone to crap.  Nothing but trolls and I-tough guys.

Any Middle Age Whites that arrive in the neighbourhood generally open up a lot more socially once they have a few years to get over the huge culture shock, learn the language, understand local fashions, grasp how electricity works, get used to the food, figure out what to watch on television and so on. It just takes them time. Travelling from where they were to here is hard considering how different it all is, remember.

Yes, but are they hard working and education oriented?

Yep.  I like to see all people as the same.  Any recognition of cultural or racial differences is a facade.  Heck.  I don't even like to recognize the human race.  We're all just living organisms in this world, no different than monkeys or amoeba.

Well if you aren't white, middle age working whites with minimal social life have no idea how to act around non whites due to ever changing racial rules of conduct so they'd rather not associate with them.  The racial rules are always changing and one false step is like stepping on a racial landmine. For many It's just better to just avoid the minefield.

Middle Age Whites are cool.  Especially the Middle Age White Knights.  I just love jousting.  I do find it distasteful when the constable picks on the Middle Age African American Knights.

I'm really curious to understand #3 and I don't think it's a unique phenomenon at all. Media-created culture of fear and all that? Or something else?
