Midwest vacation destinations (1 Viewer)

mr. furley

Footballguy
furleyfamily is looking for a Midwest vacation destination within 10-12 hours driving distance from Green Bay

using this link seems to indicate a southern perimeter of roughly Alabama, west to Kansas City and east to just past Pittsburgh.

flying is out. we are not a people of means. this would be packing the Buick station wagon and enduring the drive with kids.

what "hidden" vacation destinations are in your state, within roughly that range. not looking for Chicago, Madison, Minneapolis, etc. more for a smaller, quieter family friendly vacation spot. think lakes, amusement parks nearby, etc.

GO

How old are the kids?  We did Gatlinburg TN a few years ago and while it's touristy it was still fun.

Northern Michigan is always beautiful as well if you wanted to look at renting a cottage or something

Black hills/mount Rushmore would be right around 10-12 hour drive I would think. Lots of family stuff to hit up in rapid city.

Are you looking to travel farther away than the Wisconsin Dells area?  Renting a cabin on Lake Redstone, Lemonweir River, or other small body of water less than 30-50 miles from the Dells and Lake Delton seem to fit your criteria well.

Pushing the edge of your driving limits with this suggestion, but there are wide range of rentals on Table Rock Lake in southwest MO.  From there you're pretty close to the Silver Dollar City amusement park and the shows in Branson.

will be 9 & 7 next summer when we plan to take the vacation

Car Ferry out of Manitowoc and see Michigan
Areas up and down the western Michigan coast are fun  - Lakes and sand dunes from Muskegon north staying around Whitehall/Montegue was fun. - we would take ferry over from Ludington to Manitowoc and visit Door County. You'd just do the opposite.

We liked Gatlinburg + a couple of days in Nashville.  Traverse City and Northern MI would be good only so they could spend the entire time talking about how Door County and Northern WI is sooo much better.

Yeah I saw the thread title and was going to say Door County, WI... but being from Green Bay I'm sure the OP has been there, done that.

What kind of bankroll we working with her Furley?

How about the Grand Canyon?
flights = out

the Griswold's can tolerate about 12 hours tops in a car. that's with numerous breaks and/or overnight stay.

i could drive to Alaska on my own but wife + kids won't go more than a day drive.

i'm trying to keep it under 2 grand for 5-6 days

I came in to post Cedar Point, but obviously others beat me to it.  You can easily spend a couple days there between the ride park and the water park.  Do this on a weekday when the crowds are a little smaller.  Then catch a ferry to Put-In-Bay Island and/or Kelley's Island for a day or two (think Key West of the Great Lakes).

i will second the nashville and gatlinburg recommondations both are a lot of fun very touristy and your kids would have stuff to do you could also go to bayfield i know your a scanny guy but if you have not been there it is pretty excellent brohan take that to the bank

Bay Beach baby!
Was just visiting in-laws (Shawano) last week. Went to Bay Beach (first time). Man that place is great. Had three kids with us (10-14), and I initially bought $15 worth of tix, had a couple people hand us some, so that's all I had to buy (got about another $10) which was spectacular. Rides are great!

I guess Eagle River is not a possibility then, huh? ;)

We're going to Nashville and Memphis in a couple weeks (while middle kid is at Space Camp!) I'll post updates.

Will be back over Labor Day for wife's Grandmother's 100th. Ever go to the Shawano County fair?

Out-of-the-box thinking here... Christmas Lake in Indiana.  There's lake cabins to rent, fishing, golf, and an amusement park in nearby Santa Claus, Indiana.  Probably an 8-9 hour drive from Green Bay,

ETA: there's a really cool river town between Indianapolis and Louisville, Columbus, Indiana.  Can't recall the full story (something about a gift from the owners of Cummins), but benefactors paid to have a lot of the public buildings designed by the best architects in the world.  So the library is designed by I.M. Pei, a school designed by Saarinen, and so on.

Also along the road in Indiana... the gym the movie Hoosiers used for the Hickory Husker home games is still intact, tourable, and at the end you can shoot a couple free throws at one of the baskets.
