To hire Mike McCoy Tue Jan 15, 10:01 AM Updating an earlier report, Denver Broncos offensive coordinator Mike McCoy has informed the Broncos that he'll accept the San Diego Chargers' head coaching position.serious question, why is he the hot hire? Everyone knows Peyton is the real OC.

He's been injured yes, but he's averaged 4.4 YPC and has a 1000 yard rush/50 reception season under his belt in 3 seasons. I think he could easily turn in a Fred Taylor turnaround from being injured to being a good(not great) RB in the NFL.

He was somewhat Hot last year, but the fact that Manning openly stated he was ready for a HC gig......that endorsement probably carries the most weight.
@Jeff_McLane: Not saying this is true or this was why #Eagles weren't keen on Mike McCoy, but some around the NFL think he's too soft to be a head coach.
I mentioned in another thread that I hoped this guy leaves Denver, and thank goodness it's coming true. Maybe he'll be a better HC than he was an OC, but I have to say he left a lot to be desired in the OC department. There are some ex NFL guys here in Denver on the radio that feel his play calling was suspect, and that he lacked any kind of creativity when it comes to drawing up the plays. Last Saturday's effort against Bmore might have been the worst game plan of the year.
I LOVE the fact that he's staying in the division. I suppose time will tell how he impacted the Manning lead offense.

Maybe for some, but not in my book. If you're employed as the OC, then I hold you responsible for what happens on the field offensively. I don't care who's playing QB. Everyone in Denver is trying to shoulder the blame for play calling so as to not throw someone under the bus, but I think McCoy $%#t the bed on Saturday.
Does anybody know who will be dictating the offensive system - McCoy or Whisenhunt?Either way, I feel better about this hire for Mathews/Rivers/Alexander/Gates than I would have with a college coach or a defensive coach.

Whisenhunt will be calling the plays on Sundays. In preparing the game plan each week, I suspect that McCoy and Whisenhunt will work together to some extent — but it sounds like McCoy wants Whisenhunt to be a real offensive coordinator. It doesn't sound like McCoy wants the Norv Turner role of being the head coach in title but the offensive coordinator in reality.
