Mike Robinson giving Gore a battle.. (1 Viewer)

Da Guru

Fair & Balanced
My buddy who lives in SF told me a couple of weeks ago to watch for Robinson the rookie from PSU.

I just saw some highlights from last night and the kid looks bigger and stronger than Gore. Robinson had 2 tough TDs runs and showed some good skills.

Whoever takes gore better get Robby later in the draft because he may take over sooner than later.

Woot!!Been waiting for this thread...

The only thing stopping Robinson from being the #1 RB is DF is Frank Gore and barring injury Robinson will stay at #2 because Frank Gore is a fighter.

Game 4 is a tricky thing, sometimes the worst of the training camp guys getting cut the next day are out there. Robinson looked good but I think Gore has the confidence of the coaching staff now, and will get the lions share.

It angers me that I can't convert him back to QB and develop him at that position in Madden '07.

He'd probably give Alex Smith a run for his money if San Fran would keep him as a QB. Like a much lower caliber Vince Young.

I watched the whole game last night and Robinson did look good. But please keep in mind it was against the third stringers, most of the guys on the field on D most of the night for the Chargers were on the bubble and they didn't play particularly well. The guy the 49ers were experimenting with converting from LB to fullback looked just about as good as Robinson last night.

More physical than many people might think when they hear "ex-QB". Been a fan since this play:

I know it wasn't your intent, but aside from not really enjoying seeing that collision, it didn't really tell me much about his physicality either... well actually check that, maybe it did, but more for the willingness (some might say stupidity) on his part to be involved in such a play, and not so much that he was on the 'better' end of it (that part I attribute mainly to luck).

God. It's never-ending. Good thread title. :lmao:

I definitely would put as much stock as possible in the performance of backups in the last preseason game. Usually can predict a lot with this information.

Kind of meant it shows the kid had the size, speed, strength to make plays at the next level. Not a typical QB looking to run out of bounds. Maybe not the brightest decision, sure, but he showed (to me) he has the toughness to play a non-QB skill position. Very physical, strong player.

A lot of people speculated he could be a WR previous to SF drafting him as a RB.

good point. I totally missed the fact that as a RB that is exactly the type of mentality you are 'supposed' to have.. sounds like a smart conversion.

I really don't see how, as an alleged football fan, you don't appreciate a QB who didn't slide, and didn't run out of bounds, but actually took on a defender.

It just didn't do much for me.. maybe it's because the other player was laying motionless for a while, then again if he got up and was fine I possibly would've enjoyed it more. Believe me, I like physicality as much as the next, I'm the same guy who thinks basketballs gone extremely soft, and loves big hits in hockey, but the overwhelming feeling watching those kinds of hits is worry and concern for the other guy a split second after the initial rush of watching the impact. Of course, you guys probably already know the context / whole story of the incident, and assuming the other guy is just fine, I understand your point.

*removes unnecessary presence from thread*

PSU homer here, Robinson is amazing, i was sure whoever drafted him would have trouble keeping him off the field. Im not hoping Gore or Hicks get injured, but i do hope M Robinson sees the field this year.

I guess the question needs to be asked:Can he return punts or kicks? Then he'll be a starter.
He's been returning kickoffs in the preseason. I don't think Robinson is likely to take Gore's starting job, barring injury, but I do think it's likely that fans will start calling for him when they see how bad the Niners offense is.

Robinson looked way better than Keasey, the converted LB. Robinson was tough between the tackles, finding seams, hitting holes, and powering through would-be tacklers rarely going down on first or second contact. When he went outside, he had the speed to turn the corner and good open-space moves. Granted, this was against 2nd-3rd stringers, but Robinson looked a tier above them and will be a very good RB in the future.

If Gore goes down. I'd be all over this guy. I think we have finally found a fromer college QB that can play some serious RB.

BUMP

After that performance, I've moved him into the tier right behind LT/SA/LJ.
You would deserve that for putting stock into the last preseason game :D I still think that Hicks will be the guy should something happen to Gore. No knock on Robinson at all, except for the fact the he's a rookie QB-convert.

Given Gore's injury history, MRob has lots of dynasty potential. I think the Niners trading Barlow says more about MRob than it does about Gore.

For those of you that saw him at Penn State, he's added at least 15 pounds to his frame and is a very physical runner. He runs low to the ground, and he rarely goes down on first contact. On his second TD run he dragged 2 guys with him. He has nice hands and should get lots of receptions.

Pre-season stats:

26 carries 99 yards 2 tds

9 receptions 83 yards 1 td

Can we get an update on this battle? I have a draft tomorrow.
I took a flyer on Gore in my Dynasty league. I was impressed with Gore's performance against a good Dallas defense.
 Who's Frank Gore? This thread is about the new kid. Don't make me come over there!
C'mon over. We can catch a game in Oaktown :banned:
Hicks is the b-up you want for Gore. Gore is a great RB3. The left side of SF line is very good. The right side, not so good. Robinson, if you have space on the roster to wait 3 years for potential. This is based on what I've seen, read and been around in NorCal. NorCal is central overexposure SF central. The main issue is still York. York can f up a free lunch. A straight business model/plan in the NFL or any pro sport is a proven plan for medioricty at best result. Point, blank, period the end, SF will have no offense worth much in FF for years to come.

The guy he knocked over was in a few of my classes... he's not a big guy. Considering that the QB is a decent amount bigger and the corner was standing still... I don't see that as all THAT impressive. In the Robinson link, both players were going full speed into each other. Unfortunately, the defender got clobbered and was down.

This isn't a battle, obviously, but any time the starter has had four surgeries (two shoulder, two knee) and isn't even 25, it makes sense to know who would step in.

It would not surprise me at all for Robinson to step in and perform. As a former QB, he is sure to understand the offense and do things that a typical first year RB might struggle with (picking up the blitz, etc.). He also has good size and can absorb punishment.

As another poster said, the Barlow trade says more about MR than Gore.

BTW -- Niners depth chart had MR listed as the back up a week ago.

Gore has alot of zippers on his body for a young guy. Robby is big. physical and healthy. Plus a very good receiver. Would not be suprised at all to see him be the third down and goal line back before it is said and done.

So, everyone is in consensus that MRobinson has passed Hicks on the depth chart?
I'm not so sure. Hicks has played pretty well in the past in limited time, and I think it might be a mistake to assume that Robinson would be the one to step in if Gore got hurt.

I think Robinson represents more relative fantasy value than Gore this year. I expect, given the fact that the Niners will be behind all year and they have few receivers, that they'll put in packages with Robinson split out wide, and some gimmick plays with Robinson throwing the ball. At the worst, he'll be OK as an emergency bye week filler (who are you starting Week 6?), and considering that you can get him for nothing (I picked him up with the last dollar in our auction), that's worth something. (Although after this last pre-season game you'll probably have to pay something for him). With Gore being fairly expensive considering how bad the offense is, I'd rather have Robinson.

Would it be possible for Otis to start an "Official Pat Myself on the Back" thread thread similar to the official venting thread? As fun as it is to have to wade through all these 3 week old threads when I'm trying to look for some current Week 1 info, I could really do without it.
