Broncos fire long-time coach Shanahan

Posted: Adam Schefter | Adam Schefter | Tags: Denver Broncos, Mike Shanahan

The blockbuster of the coaching season just came in: The Denver Broncos fired Mike Shanahan.

Shanahan had three years and upwards of $20 million remaining on his contract.

Shanahan was the longest tenured coach in Broncos franchise history.

WOW, did not see this coming.

As has been said before on this board, teams/organizations dont appreciate what they have until its too late. Shanny was/is one of the better coaches in the NFL.

Thumbsdown Denver, Thumbsdown

With Shanahan available, and Cowher making it clear he would coach in 2009 for the right team AND Parcells saying he would return to coaching under the right circumstances, I expect we haven't seen the last of the NFL coaching dismissals. A lot of teams are going to look long and hard at their options.

Here's one dark horse for you...Shanahan to San Diego if Turner loses in the 1st round.

Wow he finally got a QB and the rest of his team fell apart. Oh well, he'll definitely get his pick of the open gigs.

Denver was probably ready for a change. Heck of a run for one of the smartest guys in coaching. I see this as the right move for both parties.

If I was Shanny I'd take a year off, regroup and take his pick of the coaching job litter in 2010.

I'm sorry but this is BS. They won't replace him with a better coach.

This sure isn't good news for Jay Cutler owners.

Big mistake IMO.
Am I surprised they did it? Yes. But I was always surprised how tolerant the brass was of his teams' meltdowns and underachieving. I can't think of another club that would have been so patient. So that's why I am surprised. I can't say he didn't deserve to get canned, I'm just surprised someone had the balls to pull the trigger. He's going to get rehired immediately if he wants to coach, though. I don't feel too bad for him.

What if they bring Parcells in to run operations and he brings a coach in with him a la Miami? What if that's the kind of situation Bill Cowher can't say no to? Would you still feel that way?Aren't you bothered by the fact Shanny won fewer playoff games in the last decade than TWENTY TWO other NFL teams?

I was thinking Cowher was definitely getting the Jets job, but now seeing this, Shanny is now the front runner for the job imo. I think Denver will be looking at McDaniels or Jason Garrett.

Denver fan crossing my fingers for a guy like Cowher or Spagnuolo from NYG...plus a competent GM.

I would bet any amount that they wanted to strip him of GM duties and he refused.

This is a great move by the organization. He's done virtually since the Superbowls. I applaud this move as a Broncos fan.

With that said, he's a great coach and is #1 on the list of many right now. It was just time to go their own ways.

Watch him end up in KC...
jerry jones needs to fire wade and hire mike, if he wants to win the SB
You've identified the problem with Jerry Jones..."he" wants to win a Super Bowl. That's why he can't sit back and let his coach do it instead.I can't imagine the hilarious dysfunction that hiring would bring...Jones v. Shanny v. Romo v. Owens. It'd be the greatest, most epic soap opera ever. Do you hear me? EVER.I'd love to see Jones pacing on Shanny's sideline during a 4th quarter nail-biter!

He's won more Super Bowls in the last 12 than THIRTY other NFL teams. I really don't believe either one of those hypothetical events will happen. I guess I would feel differently if one did.
