Starting him over Royal and Harvin. Royal has gone from my awesome WR3 to my crappy WR5 (for now).I'm going to start him over Cribbs (return yard league) in my 3rd WR spot. Yep.I am using Wayne and Edwards...as my 3 I have Royal, but I am done waiting. The choice is MSW, Morgan or Burleson...I am going MSW.so now that everyone has picked him upanyone have the nuts to start him?
I agree with you - injury history is something to keep an eye on. I do not agree that a staph infection makes a guy injury prone, nor does it qualify as a soft tissue issue. IMO, he has an injury history rather than being injury prone. Splitting hairs? Maybe, maybe not.Gr00vus said:Link to where I said I was a doctor? We're all guessing, but you can make better guesses when factoring in available information. You really think Terry Allen continually blowing out ligaments was all bad luck? It's a rule of thumb for me in considering how I value a FF player. If you don't like it, great - take all the grains of salt you need. When I have to consider which guy to try to claim first off waivers, all other things being relatively equal I take the guy who doesn't have a history of repeated soft tissue/ligament injuries. If you want to ignore that, bully for you. I'm not saying Walker is going to suck, I'm saying don't be surprised when he pulls up lame again.Sorry for the hijack, I was just trying to express a concern with this particular player.MCguidance said:Unless you have an M.D. in internal medicine or went to school for some sort of related medical degree I don't think you're at all qualified to make generalizations about that.He may very well have a condition such as Rocco Baldelli, but until a poster more qualified steps up, you're guessing. I don't mean it to be rude or anything, but you're point of view needs to be taken with a grain of salt (unless of course you have the aforementioned degree). And beyond that they're all injuries to the human body. I've broken my foot when 12, broken my hand when 18, broken my finger when 23. I'm brittle.Guy has had bad luckLike I said, they're all soft tissue injuries, and beyond that they're all ligament injuries, so they're actually all related. He definitely meets the criteria in my book.I make allowances for "bad luck" injuries. Guy breaks a bone because some linemen pile on when he's in a vulnerable position or an anvil drops on his collar bone isn't the same thing as repeated ligament injuries - especially when they're different ligaments. People aren't all built the same - some definitely have less elastic/weaker connective tissue than others.

McCoy > MSW > KnoxUgh, want to keep Sims-Walker but McCoy was just dropped in my league. Have M.Bush to drop also. What would you Sims-Walker lovers do?
Sure.Tore ACL late in Jr year at UCF. He was their star, so they played him extensively his Sr year anyway. He experienced swelling all year but played through it. Had 93 catches IIRC.Couch Potato - can you go into detail about his injuries? What happened? Is he "injury-prone" or were they just fluke deals and he is past it?
JAX drafted him in 3rd round despite knowing the knee wasn't 100% and despite playing for a small school with questionable competition because his abilities were very evident. Brandon Marshall, from the same school and who came out a year later, was drafted in the 4th round despite being 100% healthy.
In preseason 2007 (rookie year) MSW was still experiencing swelling even though he was the star of mini-camps and early preseason. It turns out the original ACL surgery wasn't a complete success and playing the season before on it as a Sr didn't help, so before the 2007 season JAX shut him down and put him on IR. He had an additional procedure done, and once it healed THAT WAS THE END OF THE PROBLEMS WITH THAT KNEE. I emphasize this because there is so much misinformation about that knee, and people love to regurgitate incorrect nonsense about it.
In 2008 he was emerging. Knee was fine. He was getting on the field more, and in week 4 against HOU he was 5-46 on 6 targets. In week 5 against the #1 ranked PIT D he went off for 6-107 on 9 targets. But in that game he sprained his MCL on the other knee. It should have been a 2 week injury, but it developed a staph infection that resulted in a lengthy 5 week recovery. Does a staph infection constitute "injury prone"? Not to me.
By this point in the season, after 5 weeks off, he returned in week 11 but by then other guys were settled in their roles. He had just 2 catches on 6 targets as his inactivity showed. The next week (week 12) he wasn't really a part of things and barely played.
Then things got worse. His best friend was stabbed and killed Thanksgiving night. Walker, who was home for the holiday, arrived on the scene and found his friend lying in a pool of blood. He was given permission to miss the week 13 game that Sunday.
After the friend's funeral, Walker boarded a flight to Chicago for Sunday's week 14 game. When he landed, he had a message saying his father wasn't doing very well. He got a call a few hours later saying his father had died. He took the first flight home Sunday morning.
At this point, with everything he'd gone through and the team in the toilet anyway, they mostly just shut him down for the year. He just had a couple of targets in weeks 16 and 17.
This year, once again in OTAs and early preseason he was dong great. Then he had a high ankle sprain that cost him over a month. He was back for the week 4 preseason game and was 4-63-1 but Del Rio had by this time given his job to Williamson.
So, yeah, he's had some injuries. But he's had ONE injury that required surgery, and it has been 100% since before the start of the 2008 season. All the rest is small stuff that other players go through. Nothing chronic with the knees. MCL sprain (+ fluky staph infection). High ankle sprain. IMO nothing that matters going forward.
one minor thing. A staph infection (especially if MRSA) can make that person MUCH more susceptible to future infections, I have to think that Walker-Sims and his medical team/agent knows this too though. That is awesome (about jimmy smiths mom sending newspaper clippings to coughlin)Great stuff Couch! This is the stuff I look for. The edge every year is finding those 2-3 guys that seem to come out of the wood work. I always get frustrated that there is huge talent out there and not even the "experts" pick up on it.This does remind me of another receiver that had some "injury" issues early on in their career. I'm from Dallas so this stings a little.Jimmy Smith (Wiki)Smith was drafted in the second round of the 1992 NFL Draft out of Jackson State University. He spent two injury-plagued seasons with Dallas. After missing much of the 1992 season with a broken leg, early in 1993 he underwent an emergency appendectomy which led to a severe infection and was nearly fatal. In the aftermath, a dispute broke out between Smith and Cowboy owner Jerry Jones, who claimed that, since the condition wasn't football related, the Cowboys should not have to pay Smith for the 1993 season. Smith spent all of 1993 on the injured reserve list. Before the 1994 season, Smith was cut by the Cowboys. He was subsequently signed by the Philadelphia Eagles but was cut before the 1994 season began. He was signed by the expansion Jacksonville Jaguars in February 1995 after head coach Tom Coughlin saw the talent that Smith possessed, perhaps as a result of the efforts of Smith's mother, who sent Coughlin a binder of Smith's press clippings. He finished his career seventh in NFL history with 862 catches and 11th in league history with 12,287 yards. He had 67 career touchdown catches with the Jaguars. He had seven straight 1,000 yard seasons which ranks third behind Jerry Rice and Tim Brown. LickityBlitz
I have the exact same situation. I'm liking the number of targets Burleson is getting but then again MSW could prob get targeted a lot as well. I'll have to look more into it.Hipple said:starting him over Hester and Burleson.![]()

He also missed time with a staph infection. He was hospitalize for 4 days and missed 4 games.Who's talking about a staff infection? Understood. Staph infections aren't something I consider when thinking about a player's injury proneness - although given the post up the page maybe I should. He also missed time with a staph infection. I consider the risks similar to drafting a Henderson or one of the other high talent, high injury receivers from the saints. They have a better QB, but they also have more competition for the starting role in New Orleans. As a Mike Walker owner, you actually gotta love his situation. No legit competition for WR2, he has Torry Holt on the other side to draw the #1 CB, a good enough QB with a team that may be trailing most of the time, i say situation is GREAT.To be clear I'm not questioning his talent. I don't like his situation and his injury history, which tends to make me value him less than probably many of the people in this thread. Thus I probably will not rush to grab him off the waiver wire unless I have total dead weight on my roster.Good post. You need to be a wet blanket. Seriously. I'm probably WAY too high on Sims-Walker. I drafted him in 4 high stakes leagues in Vegas on opening weekend, so I need to hear counter-opinions on why I'm wrong on this guy. He's having recurring soft tissue injuries at different locations on his body. I don't consider most guys injury prone, but guys like this definitely are.Sorry to be a wet blanket.Tore ACL late in Jr year at UCF.

Pretty good article on Sims-Walker.http://jac.scout.com/2/874947.htmlI got him last night (dropped Scheffler who was my TE3)before I ever read this thread. Hopefully this turns out to be a case of a blind squirrel finding a nut. I'm trying to decide whether to start him or Stuckey as my WR3 (sitting Royal down), but I'm leaning towards MSW at this moment.
Yeah, I personally think he's being pimped a bit too much here. Torry Holt is still here and you have to think he'll get a bunch of looks and they love to throw to Marcedes Lewis. The other part of the roster upheaval equation not being talked about here is that 4th round pick Mike Thomas is now looking to start in the slot. I'm not saying Thomas will outscore MSW. I'm just saying that everybody's getting excited about WR3/WR4 (fantasy-wise) who could look like a great pickup one week and a total bust the next. Personally, I put MSW in the same class (at best) as Michael Clayton of the Bucs. Plenty of opportunity, but I wouldn't count on consistent production.ETA - Here's an article mentioning Mike Thomas starting in the slot.Admittedly I have not read this entire thread because I really don't think a waiver wire guy is worth this much discussion.
Bottom line for me:
Dynasty- I would continue to have concerns about MSW's health issues and it would devalue him somewhat. But that has to be balanced with his potential to be a clear WR1 for the Jags who could be behind quite often in games. He is certainly worth a roster spot and could be startable depending on league rules whenever healthy as soon as this week.
Redraft- Why do you care about health issues? If he's healthy, he has some value and might be startable now and could certainly develop into a good option. If he gets hurt again cut him and move on.
We are talking about a guy that should have been undrafted or only drafted very late. Why all the angst? If he plays well, then cool. If not, oh well. I certainly hope no ones season is hinging on MSW's production. and I'm baffled as to why there's a 4 page thread about him.
Walker (healthy) has done more in 2 games than Clayton in 3 yearsPersonally, I put MSW in the same class (at best) as Michael Clayton of the Bucs. Plenty of opportunity, but I wouldn't count on consistent production.

too truewalker is a player, he's just always dinged. clayton plays every game and never dents the stat sheet. there's nothing similar between the two.FWIW I consulted with my GF (who is a Dr. at the VA) and she said that my above assertion (on a previous mrsa leading to more in the future) is not true. I strike the statement from the record.Understood. It depends on your scoring format and tolerance of uncertainty given what Jacksonville looks like and the injury potential.Of course, Nate Burleson has not been the model of health either.I would put Evans ahead of MSW and Mason and Burleson on roughly the same level in most standard leagues. In a TD-emphasis league, I would put Burleson ahead of MSW and Mason and Evans on roughly the same level.'But that's just me...So let me get this straight ... MSW(redraft) > Burleson, Mason, Evans, Bryant and, either of the Claytons?
