Miles Austin (1 Viewer)

Potential Dynasty Prospect ~ I read that the Dallas coaches are gushing over this WR Miles Austin. He's 6'3, 219, and played college ball at Monmouth (NJ). The 2008 season will be a his 3rd year. I may just take a flier on him in one of my my Zealots leagues. Does anybody know anything about this guy?

Worth a late late flier, but there are a few guys that might get squeezed out at the WR position. He'll need to do a lot in camp. His size is what impressed the coaches, but he needs to show he can catch the ball.

Cowboy fan alert

Austin does have great speed, but questionable hands. I do believe one of Austin, Isiah Stanback, or Danny Amendola (Sp?) will get some touches. Who ever wins the WR3 have some value this year should Terry Glenn suffer a setback which is likely a 50/50 proposition based on his current knee conditions.

I REALLY like Amendola for the record.

Definately a camp battle worth watching.

As of the end of last season, his most perceived value was as a kick returner. With both Felix Jones and Pacman now in the picture, he may be feeling a squeeze. In addition, Isaiah Stanback is healthy this year, and may also get a look as a returner as well.

The outcome of the Terry Glenn issue is going to play a large part in what the Cowboys do with their roster. If he signs his injury settlement, he may be afforded the opportunity to stay. If not, and if he doesn't get through training camp in an acceptable fashion, they'll cut him. As it stands, he can't pass a "real" physical.

A lot more of this will be determined as to how Isaiah Stanback can perform in training camp. He's another wild card to the equation. If he performs up to expectations, he'll easily beat out Miles Austin.

So really, there's no way of telling til August, but if it were me that wanted to take a flyer on "any" Cowboy, it would be Stanback.

:lmao: Austin has a great size/speed combo, but he has not proven to be a natural at WR. Stanback has a lot more upside and the team invested a 4th in him even though his foot was injured at the time of the draft - so you know they believe in him. I was always impressed with his fearlessness in the open field and "do whatever it takes" mentality at Washington - and he is definitely a physical specimen. If anyone is going to emerge from the pack to be the long term WR2, I think Stanback is the one to watch.

:goodposting: Stanback is the guy that the coaches are hoping pans out. Austin was a good kick returner last year, but his role is in serious jeopardy.

Thanks Sig, and yes, he is a physical specimen indeed. Every bit as much as T.O. I just saw him a couple of weeks ago and his appearance alone is intimidating. Not to mention his speed and agility. A true "athlete".

I agree that Stanback is the player that the coaching staff in Dallas would like to see succeed simply because of his draft value. However, if I was betting on a WR in Dallas not named TO, Glenn, or Crayton; then I would recommend taking a look at Sam Hurd. Much better all around WR with better hands, better route running, and better skill set. Austin was a decent kick returner, but as already mentioned his job is now in jeopardy with Pacman and Felix on the roster.

If Glenn does not return this year, which is a better than remote possibility, I think you will see some potential value with Hurd playing as WR4 (behind TO, Witten, and Crayton).

Not too much more to add beyond what Andy and Sigmund put in. But Austin seems the most likely guy to get cut if Glenn makes the team. TO, Crayton, Hurd, and Stanback are almost certainties to make the team. I think they will only keep 5 WR on the 53 man roster instead of 6. They could use that other roster spot in other areas. So if Glenn can pass his physical, Austin gets cut and Amendola goes to the practice squad. But if Glenn gets cut, I think Austin sticks around for another season.

Glenn's not going to be able to pass a physical, they're just trying to give him some grace in the case he can prove to be capable of playing thru it to the degree they'd like to see.

Everybody wants to dog the Cowboys for trying to make him sign that injury settlement, which they've upped from the initial offer they made before the draft.

What outsiders aren't aware of or considering is the fact that the Cowboys paid Glenn over $5 million last year for essentially doing nothing.

It's a fair offer, and Glenn knows it.

Is it a given that Crayton stays in the slot? I know they really want Hurd or one of those other guys to develop into a #2, but last season Crayton ended up playing that role for the most part. Has anything changed to make people think that one of those youngsters will push him out, or is it reasonable to think the same would happen this year if Glenn isn't around?

Andy, do you think Glenn starts the season on the PUP list?
No, not likely. For one, it would not benefit anybody. It's reached the point of "sign the injury settlement or there's the door" unfortunately. He's been at this rehab for nearly a year now. It's not going to get any better than it is right now, minus further surgery. If he were on the roster come opening day, his contract would be gauranteed. (unless he signs the waiver)So, fans may need to closet their #83 jerseys...for good. It's sad, but that's the reality of it.

Is it a given that Crayton stays in the slot?
Not a given, but in all likelihood, probably so. It's his bread and butter. Sam Hurd knows all of the receiver positions, but seems to be more comfortable on the outside. (First of all, until this Terry Glenn matter is settled, it is really going to disrupt offensive gameplans come training camp. Let me just get that out of the way)Come hell or high water, the Cowboys are going to want to do everything they can to get Isaiah Stanback on the field this year. People keep forgetting about him because he was injured last year. Now, although his limited experience at WR is on the outside, they may very well want to move him around to help develop mis-matches. Stanback is tremendously athletic and very physical. They'll be looking to find what suits him best.Another thing we may see is Felix Jones shifting out of the backfield and into the slot in certain two-back formations. One other thing they'll likely want to do this year is shift a TE into the slot in two-tight end sets. Could be Witten, Curtis, or rookie Bennett. They'll want to keep them guessing.Jason Garrett may not have what a lot of people want to claim as a true #2 WR, but he'll be keeping the defenses guessing this year in any case.I think we'll see some very interesting formations this year. They have a full season under their belt in this offense, and he'll surely be adding some twists. And he likes utilizing TEs. Fasano wasn't grasping this offense last year. That's why he's gone.

IIRC Chaos was all over Austin before the draft and when the Boys picked him up. Austin hasn't proven to do too much though. He prompted my radar to be on him and everytime I look, I don't see much. There's just nothing to get excited about and we're at year 3. I think it's time to "move on"
