Miley Cyrus: 'Vanity Fair' photos embarrassing, not artsy (1 Viewer)

Miley Cyrus fans will get to see a different side of the pop sensation in June's Vanity Fair, and it's a side she apparently has second thoughts about revealing.

The 15-year-old actress/singer posed for celebrity photographer Annie Leibovitz for the issue, on sale in New York and Los Angeles on Wednesday and nationwide May 6. One waist-up shot shows Cyrus looking provocatively over her right shoulder, her back nude and breasts covered by her arms and shimmery fabric.

In a caption with the image, Disney's Hannah Montana star tells VF: "I think it's really artsy. It wasn't in a skanky way. Annie took, like, a beautiful shot, and I thought that was really cool. That's what she wanted me to do, and you can't say no to Annie. She's so cute. She gets this puppy-dog look and you're like, 'OK.' "

But on Sunday, Cyrus apparently had a change of heart. "I took part in a photo shoot that was supposed to be 'artistic' and now, seeing the photographs and reading the story, I feel so embarrassed," she said in a statement issued by her publicist, Jill Fritzo. "I never intended for any of this to happen, and I apologize to my fans who I care so deeply about."

Disney Channel also took the offensive by issuing a statement. "Unfortunately, as the article suggests, a situation was created to deliberately manipulate a 15-year-old in order to sell magazines."

Cyrus is a popular Disney celebrity with the hit Hannah Montana series and Best of Both Worlds Concert, which became a top-selling live show, 3-D concert film and now album. Last week, the album became available at all retailers and jumped from No. 31 to No. 3, according to Nielsen SoundScan. Disney Book Group announced last week that Cyrus would share her "inspiring" story, from her roots in Tennessee to hitting the big time, in a book due in 2009.

How did VF respond to the Cyrus camp's offensive on Sunday? "Miley's parents and/or minders were on the set all day. Since the photo was taken digitally, they saw it on the shoot and everyone thought it was a beautiful and natural portrait of Miley," said a statement from spokeswoman Beth Kseniak.

Another photo in the package features Miley posing with her father, singer Billy Ray Cyrus. They also can be seen in a behind-the-scenes slideshow from the photo shoot, which has since been posted on VF.com.

In December, another set of photos circulated on the Internet showing Cyrus and a girlfriend almost kissing. "It was me," Cyrus tells VF, "on my MySpace. For me, I was like, That's two girls — it's not a big deal. … I was just like it didn't affect me."

Also, apologizes for sexy photos:

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Teen idol Miley Cyrus, the fresh-faced star of Disney's "Hannah Montana" television franchise, has apologized for two sets of photos in which she flashes her bra, lies across a boy's lap, and appears semi-nude.

The 15-year-old churchgoing daughter of country singer Billy Ray Cyrus said in a statement on Sunday that she was embarrassed about some photos released on the Internet and others to be published in Vanity Fair magazine.

The first series of photos, which circulated on the Internet last week, showed Cyrus draped over the lap of her then-boyfriend, her producer's son, while another showed her revealing part of her green bra.

She is also starring in some as-yet released shots by celebrity photographer Annie Leibovitz in which she appears to be topless and wrapped in a blanket. These are set to be published in Vanity Fair magazine's June edition.

"For Vanity Fair, I was so honored and thrilled to work with Annie. I took part in a photo shoot that was supposed to be 'artistic' and now, seeing the photographs and reading the story, I feel so embarrassed," Cyrus said in a statement published on People magazine's Web site.

The Disney Channel backed up the rising star saying in a statement that "a situation was created to deliberately manipulate a 15-year-old in order to sell magazines."

No one from Vanity Fair was immediately available to comment.

But in a statement to the TV show "Entertainment Tonight," Vanity Fair defended itself.

"Miley's parents and/or minders were on the set all day. Since the photo was taken digitally, they saw it on the shoot and everyone thought it was a beautiful and natural portrait of Miley," said the magazine's statement.

Regarding the photos on the Internet, Cyrus said these were "silly, inappropriate shots" and she was sorry if she had disappointed anyone.

"I appreciate all the support of my fans, and hope they understand that along the way I am going to make mistakes and I am not perfect," she said.

"Most of all, I have let myself down. I will learn from my mistakes and trust my support team. My family and my faith will guide me through my life's journey."

Late last year, some candid photos of Cyrus frolicking with a female friend during a sleepover raised some eyebrows. She said at the time that there was "nothing wrong" with those photos.

Cyrus rocketed to fame as "Hannah Montana" on the Disney Channel's TV show of the same name about a girl who leads a double life as a teenager and singing sensation.

"Hannah Montana" ranks first among TV series of U.S. cable television for children aged 6 to 14. Her concert tour last year, "Hannah Montana & Miley Cyrus: Best of Both Worlds" was a sensation, sparking a 3D movie that topped the box office chart.

America. Where you can be the untalented, unattractive daughter of one of the most ridiculous mullets in history and make billions.

She strikes me as a cross between Lohan and Shannon Doherty ... might be a hybrid of their personalities down the line ...

Sounds like the best of both worlds... :lmao: She seriously needs some teef work...

Poor picture, very unflattering. Kind of the goth heroine chic thing going on.

Sexualizing a 15 year old who depends on a wholesome image is deplorable. Her handlers should have never allowed this.

Her father manages her, plus...he's her father.

The fact that he gave his okay for these pictures tells me that he's pretty-much just her pimp at this point.

There really is not anything wrong with that photo. Apparently She and her parents liked how it came out, but then the media spun it out of wack and now she feels bad.

Honestly, it is not bad

Sweet Niblets!! :lmao:
I hope Uncle Earl never sees this.I can kind of see her being manipulated into this (not saying she was but I could see it happening to a 15 yr old) but what parent would let his 15 daughter have pictures like this taken for a Magazine shoot unless all he was seing was $$$?

jessica simpson's dad talked about his daughter's appeal being linked to her "d"-cups awhile back...billy ray and miley were just testing the waters for her career beyond disney. disney didn't like them tinkering with a proven profitable formula. they reminded the cyrus clan that she's under contract and their place in the entertainment industry has more value to them right now than anything.

the shark has been jumped...don't see much of career, entertainment wise, for her once she hits 18...can't fault her for going to the old sex appeal while the getting is good...

Hi :bye: Welcome to the year 2008. Lets make sure a few things are clear:

Teenagers have LOTS of sex these days

kids aren't held to the same puritanical modesty as previous generations
kids actually have colored bracelets they wear to show off which sex acts they've performed...this has been going on for years
She is showing her shoulder...oooooo, put your corset back on young lady
Go to a local bar/club and check out what most kids wear out these days...if your 20th century virgin eyes can take it
Hollywood is as Hollywood does...that has always been the case, just ask shirley temple

It doesn't matter what she's showing. It matters what is implied. If she had a banana half-way down her throat, it wouldn't be showing anything offensivbe, but the 'idea' would be inappropriate.15 year-olds aren't allowed in bars/clubs in my area. 21 year-olds are adults. They can dress as slutty as they like. Their fathers aren't dolling them up to exploit them for money.

uh huh, sure sure. I know, its SO offensive and provocative to show her shoulder. Been to the beach lately? Heck, been to a MALL lately? Your analogy is laughable at best. One depicts a sexual act using an inanimate object the other shows a girls shoulder. Please return your ticket to modern America and proceed directly back to your pew.

no, but when i do i am not going to raise her to be ashamed of sex or sexuality. I'll try to teach her to be smart about her body, be aware of the situations she puts herself in, and also about actions and their consequences. But, if she happens to be considered beautiful by society, i am not going to make feel ashamed or embarrassed about it. If she chooses to use her beauty to her advantage, she just needs to understand the consequences of those actions. And if she's a troll, i'll just send her to an ivy league school

As a father of four daughters....I think you'll change your mind if you have a daughter. I sincerely wish you luck if you don't.

I know its idealistic, and maybe even not realistic in the eyes of some with daughters. But, thats how i feel, its what i believe, and its not to say that i wont try to pass along self respect and personal values. I just think society places too much emphasis on sexual repression and shame. Its built right into the religion that dominates US society. Shame and guilt. Perfect conduits for repression and control

Lets figure this out. If she is selling stuff based on image for $1 billion dollars to the teens, preteens, elementary kids... how much more money can they sell stuff with her image to older, single, or married, horny middle aged men? $2 billion maybe. If a little shoulder will get more money... so be it.

Last year she made $17 million. This years projected sales are $1 billion.
..and she was doing it the right way. They don't need to change her personality. She made tons of lute by appealing to pre-teens and their parents. It had nothing to do with sexuality. It seems that Billy Ray & Co. are looking to the future and trying to have her become a sex object as her 12 and 13 year-old fans grow into puberty. They seem to be forgetting that there will always be new twelve year-olds.This is step number one down the Britney, Lindsay path.

My seven year old doesn't understand sex. Hell she doesn't know what that is. Would you want to expose your kid to sexuality like this? I hate that I had to turn off the Today show this morning because Hannah Montana was showing extra skin.Trust me, I'm not repressed, not at all. You won't want your very little kid seeing their favorite actress half naked.

At what age do you think is too young for this behavior?

What behavior? It's just innocent back and shoulder. The fact that Buddy Knuckles doesn't see the shame in the expoitation of this child is amazing to me.

The banana picture is just a few months away.

This is someone's daughter. Please be very careful with what you post.

I would hate to see anyone get a Good Season on the day after the Draft.

#1 Dad job... keep your daughter off the pole. With your attitude, I see FAIL.

From TMZ.com:

Miley Cyrus might be boo-hooing about this Vanity Fair shoot, but we're told that her parents were with her "the entire time" and that they knew everything that was going on. So any suggestion that Annie Leibovitz tricked Miley into taking racy shots are absurd: "There was no subterfuge," we're told. Well-placed sources at Vanity Fair say that the mag is "happy for all the press -- we're selling magazines, after all," and when it comes to Miley's suggestion that the legendary Leibovitz got her to take a topless shot, "Are you going to believe Annie Leibovitz or Miley Cyrus?"

This really bothers me.

I have two daughters, 7 and 5, and they love Hannah Montana. I don't want my daughters to see these photos. It's families like mine that are supporting Ms. Cyrus through the purchase of all the Disney merchandise. She's putting it all at risk here. The photos she took ARE artistic- for adults. They might even be suitable for older teenagers to look at. But for "tweens" and younger, which comprise her audience, they are highly unsuitable.

Miley Cyrus is a role model and I don't want my daughters thinking it's OK to imitate this behavior.

Trust me, I'm not repressed, not at all. You won't want your very little kid seeing their favorite actress half naked.
My daughter has a best friend and they do a lot of stuff together and I'm sure they've seen each other naked hundreds of times. They have bathed together and played dress up. I'm not too concerned with my daughter seeing another girl naked...or half naked. :) ...at you not being repressed.
