MIN QB options... (1 Viewer)

There's a good thread running right now following the Berrian signing & discussing the pros & cons of the signing.

I think most agree, Berrian signing gives MIN a legit WR-tandem in Rice & Berrian, to pair-up with ADP. The problem clearly is the lack of a legitimate QB there. The few times I was able to watch TJ last year - he looked awful (pretty similar ot the Monday night game with Alex Smith :goodposting: )

I'd like to see what others are thinking:

1. Do you think Tavaris is a potential legitimate QB option in MIN, or is he merely a fill-in the blank?

2. Are there any Veteran backup options available potentially that you see that could come in & compete for the starting spot now?

3. Do you think they'll draft a QB early - someone who could potentially pose some threat of cometition in `08 (Ryan, Brohm, Henne, Flacco)?

#1I think they stick with Jackson but bring in a vet backup (someone not threatening to Jackson) to help bring him along.

# 1

I think Tarvaris gets another year. The guy gets bashed here, and I won't argue that he looked lost many times last season. But this kid has talent. He came from a really small school, and just completed his first year as a starter. I think the Vikes would be foolish to take him out so quickly.

I'm 95% sure that the Vikings are going to go with Tarvaris Jackson as their QB next year.

If we get the Jackson we saw in the last two games of the year, where they took the diapers off a bit, then I'm encouraged.

If they throttle him back like they did the other fourteen, it's going to be ugly again.

I, for one, am mildly optomistic that it will be closer to what we saw in the last two.

What about bringing in Warner for a couple of years. I'm not sure what it would take to get him from AZ, but he does want to start rather than back up Leinart, and is a free agent after this year. Jackson seemed to improve last year but is not there yet. Give Warner a 2 year contract and name him the starter for 2008, after that make it a open competition between Warner and Jackson so you don't totally lose what progress that was made with Jackson.

Vikings have too many weapons and are ready to strike now, they can't wait and hope that Jackson is ready in 2008.

Trent Green ?
I think he's done, but that's just my supposition.Griese and Frerotte are FA's who wouldn't be bad pickups IMHO. I also think that Andrew Walter could be another Derrick Anderson in the right place (admittedly a longshot), and I wonder why someone doesn't take a chance on him.

Just when I think he starting to come around his bad habits surface and he attempt to throw a pick on a terrible jump pass. Vikings have the talent to be a contender. I don’t think they should have to wait on Tavaris.

There are several journeymen QB that intrigue me. None have more talent or athletic ability than Tavaris but they could be better game managers and show more composure under pressure. With all the success of late round and undrafted QBs of late, the Vikings shouldn't leave any stone unturned.
3. Do you think they'll draft a QB early - someone who could potentially pose some threat of cometition in `08 (Ryan, Brohm, Henne, Flacco)?
I do think they will draft a QB this year. Mostly because they have 8 or 9 draft picks and only one glaring need – Defensive End. Unfortunately, I don’t follow college football so I have no idea which QB could compete with TJax. I will take a shot in the dark and guess that they take Matt Flynn on the second day.

I would love to see Billy Volek or Quinn Gray in purple. Both are ufa's and based on watching the Vikes every Sunday, T-jack does not have QB1 material. Gray or Volek have shown something in limited time, and would allow a bit of time for a drafted QB to develop.

I believe Volek has re-signed w/ SD.

I think the Bears are trying to trade him for just this reason. Keep him out of Min.

At age 24, Troy Aikman, Drew Brees and Brett Favre were absolutely terrible. Steve Young and Donovan McNabb played very poorly. Doug Williams and Ben Roethlisberger were just as bad during their age 24 season as Jackson was. Steve McNair looked bad that year, too. Jim McMahon, Jim Everett, Ken O'Brien, Terry Bradshaw and Dan Fouts were below average QBs at that age.

Dave Krieg, Jake Delhomme, Elvis Grbac, Ron Jaworski, David Garrard, Philip Rivers and Mark Brunell all completed less than 50 passes during their age 24 season. Matt Hasselback completed three passes that year, Chad Pennington completed two.

Kurt Warner, Trent Green, Jeff Garcia, Mark Rypien, Carson Palmer, Brad Johnson, Brian Sipe, Marc Bulger, Ken Stabler, Phil Simms, Neil O'Donnell, Joe Theisman and Bill Kenney weren't even active in the NFL at age twenty-four.

Jackson wasn't good last year. But that doesn't mean he's in bad company.
