Minnesota Vikings Team Thread (2 Viewers)

KJ Osborn has looked really good in camp. Has the inside track to WR3 right now...although I'm not sure that makes him fantasy relevant because Irv looks unreal right now and will be the third receiving option for this team (and a TE steal in fantasy). Westbrook hasn't been practicing yet (off to the side workouts) but the WR depth is better now to cover for injuries that may show up (feel bad for Bisi).

If the QB can stay off the COVID reserve list, I am cautiously optimistic about this being a special season...

I don't see having 2 unvaxed QBs as workable in this environment. If one of them had close contact, the other almost always will have as well. I can't see how you avoid becoming the 2021 version of what happened to Denver in 2020. Stanley should be replaced with someone safer.
I do love Zimmer not treating the situation with kid gloves either, and just calling out these guys.

Always kind liked Browning in college. I didn't think he was any worse than Eason at Washington, despite their difference in draft capital.

Captain Kirk makes way too much money to not get vaccinated.

Its ridiculous.

Yeah bad news in regards to Gladney. A 1st round pick wasted there but no way the Vikings could keep him after what he did.

So it goes.

I know enough to not over value preseason.  I am not sure what Zimmer expected when you don't field a single starter.  Isn't his job to get these guys ready.  He needs to look in the mirror first for his criticism.  Although  the back ups Oline the Vikings are playing in pre-season are basically making the league minimum.  https://www.spotrac.com/nfl/positional/offensive-line/

I don't get why teams continue to try to groom backup QB without  NFL caliber arms like Browning.  Seen enough of Ponder and Dalton to know it doesn't work.  BTW, If they want a QB that actually has the ability to look good with 2 and and 3s then Kyle Sloter is available.

:X

so many penalties.. You'd think they decided they wanted to set a record..

Good - down 14 they did come back and looked better then they had when the game started.

Bad - Kirk again holds on to the ball WAY to long.. lost count how many times I was yelling "throw it away!!" instead, once again he hangs on hoping someone gets open before he gets plowed.

Watching how the Bengals were able to move the ball at will at times, and watching what the Cardinals did in week one.. Not to mention their defense looks crazy good does not make week two look like it will be any better..

Then looking further.. Seahawks and the Browns.. They better figure things out REAL fast or they could be 0-4...   :oldunsure:

I think they did. During the game they put up a stat of the highest number of penalties under Zimmer which if I recall correctly was 9. They mentioned this because the Vikings had 10 already at that point in the first half.

I'm usually overly optimistic about the Vikings but after Irv Smith got injured I pretty much threw in the towel as far as this team being good this season.

I do think the run defense was improved and Michael Pierce is fun to watch.

They still cant block anyone though. Bradbury getting pushed into the backfield over and over again. Cleveland a bit too but not as much. Udoh had some mistakes but he didnt seem quite as bad.

Stop me if you've heard this one before...

The undersized offensive line couldn't block up the middle and were destroyed there. The corners were roasted like chestnuts on an open fire.

Cousins is the epitome of the average NFL qb who can play well enough to win but won't be the x factor in many games.

The offensive line can't run block.

Zimmer needs to go and so does Cousins and probably the GM too. We need to start over and once again are wasting the career of a great offensive player (Cook).

I know he wasn't lighting the world on fire, but I thought he was worth more than they got, especially when his cap hit was only $3m. Hughes and a 7th for a 6th seems like a good deal for KC.
Here is a team that has zero depth at the position and they basically send him to KC for absolutely nothing.  Make me question the way the entire organization evaluates talent.  No wonder San Fran is inquiring about the availability of Dantzler.

Uggghh.. That was a kick in the .... :kicksrock:

This Defense is NOT good .. A few turnovers saved them .. Coaching isn't helping.. Blitz on 4th and 5 good.. All out blitz on 4th and 5 is Not good... Harrison Smith is in his normal spot and they probably turn it over on downs.

How many times does Breland need to get torched before they realize he is not a one-on-one CB?

At least the offensive looked pretty good.. Would be nice to have a TE you could count on.

Losing Irv hurt a lot. Encouraged by the holes opened for Cook today (he was a few shoelaces away from some long ones) and pass pro was pretty good against a team that destroyed the TEN o line last week. As you said though the defense is so bad, especially the secondary. Guys open everywhere. Not really any options to fix at this point. The last drive today I do think they should have tried another play or two. A young kicker who hasn’t been in that spot very much, I’m not trotting him out there from 37 when I don’t have to. It doesn’t get any easier next week. This one hurt today.

Not sure what to say about this team except they can't get out of their own way..
Constantly making dumb mistakes that costs them games.. It's not like they are getting blown out, just not doing enough to keep themselves from losing.

If they lose next week, then time to start selling/rebuilding as they might as well play for a good draft pick.
At this point Jefferson, Cook and Theilen are "untouchables" on offense.
Otherwise, make us an offer??  :oldunsure:

It's not like FF.......trades are basically non-existent (although there have been a few over the last few seasons).

The most discouraging part from yesterday was they marked down on a 14 play-75 yd drive to open the game for a TD and then do absolutely nothing after that.  How can you look so good on one drive and absolute poop for the next 50 minutes of game time?  Ugh

ETA:  It could have been much worse as Baker missed a wide open OBJ two or three times that would have resulted in long TD's.

Well, Zimmer tried to lose the game by playing not to lose in the 4th quarter.. Lucky for him it was Detroit.. Think the Lions coach made a mistake going for 2. He kicks the XP there and I'm 90% sure Zimmer has Cousin kneel and go to OT.. His hand was forced to actually play to win and they were able to get it..

The schedule after Carolina and the bye is Brutal..

Cowboys, Ravens, Chargers, Packers

4-0 run to get our hopes up followed by a string of losses probably.

Carolina is pretty good too; it could get ugly. The way they gave it away today (despite getting bailed out) was just so disgusting. Instead of trying to give a team less time for their last drive, just go get a #### first down and don’t give it back to them at all! Jefferson tearing them up all game but go into an idiotic shell up by 10. Stupid fumble by Mattison with nothing to gain by fighting for an extra foot. Didn’t use timeouts on D when Detroit was driving with under 2 min, to preserve time for a potential winning drive (Detroit was out of timeouts and Vikes calling timeouts couldn’t have hurt them). Just a mess in the 4th.

If there’s anything positive, they somehow won one of these type of games, Mattison proved effective and versatile, Jefferson is a stud and the defense was halfway decent today. They better up their game though or their season will be over by Thanksgiving.

Tired of Zimmers :bs: coaching not to lose...

up by 11 run...run...run.. punt... up by 8... run...run...run.... punt and now another OT..

Got lucky last week, might get lucky again this week but his time has come and gone...

I'd  have no issue if they fired him tomorrow  and used the bye week to let someone else step in and start coaching to win.

Never boring this season.

Would rather be 4-2 at this points and think we should be. And end of game management needs to improve. But, the positives are that we aren’t out if it and we are probably an above average team with a good offense.

Just so tired of the focus on misdirection and soft coverage. 2nd and 10? Run. 2nd and 2? Pass. Is what world is this working? Whenever we go into the hurry up we are slaying teams downfield. I feel like at some point wholesale changes should be made on the staff, although I can’t immediately think of a ton of candidates. If your $30mm QB and defense are both playing pretty decently and you are 3-4, where else can you lay the blame?

Enough is enough.  When you get outcoached by McCarthy, it's time to go.  I like Zimmer as a person.  Seems like a nice guy.  Love his no-nonsense attitude in pressers.  But, I've never seen a coach who gets his team to play to the level of the competition like he does.  Zero killer instinct.  It's nauseating.  I've seen it so many times, I want to throw my remote through the TV screen.  But, I'm to the point where I'm too tired to do so.  It's so predictable, frustrating, and downright disgusting.

Get a coach who wants to win, rather than try not to lose.  I'd rather see blowouts than watch them give away games they should win on a weekly basis.

And how many times are we going to watch the Vikes just march down the field, like a machine, and score a TD on their opening drive, only to come NOWHERE close to having another drive that dominant the rest of the game?  How does that happen?  I mean, I know defenses adjust or whatever, but that's simply inexcusable.  Especially at home.  Happened against Cleveland, and happened again tonight. Again, ZERO killer instinct.

I've been afraid of the grass is greener mentality and worried a new coach could lead to years of suckitude. Zimmer is at least solid, has had great defenses (usually), yadda, yadda. I'm getting ready to get on the new coach wagon. We have WAY too much talent on this team in both sides of the ball to be playing these kind of games. Time to shake it up and try something new.

This team is going nowhere with Zimmer, that much is clear.  So that was a fantastic (and all too predictable) loss for the Vikings.  Bye Mike.   :bye:

🙂

^^^^^ Nicest thing I can say about last nights game.
Two weeks to prepare and this is what they brought?

Zimmer is WAY to conservative for this NFL.
The fact they came within seconds of losing to the 0-7 Lions should have been enough for this team to realize his time has come and gone.

I've reached a point where all I can do is :lmao: ..
The minute they had to settle for a FG in the 4th quarter with some dumb calls I turned to my wife and said "Well, that is it. They've made Rush look like the 2nd coming of Brady tonight, so he'll drive down for the winning TD" ..

Sure enough..

I’ve been in support of Zimmer for quite a while, but that performance was unforgivable. He should be gone before the end of the season

Merry Weekend, Vikings fans.

I follow Baltimore and am interested on your thoughts on how you folks see tomorrow's game going.

From my perspective, I think the Ravens will be in trouble.

Their defense has been bad, in ways that fans of the team aren't used to. They played well for 4 quarters against both Denver & LAC, and for a half each against Detroit & KC. Other than that, they've been putrid. They don't tackle well and the middle of the field is often wide open. Cook, Thielen, and Jefferson could run wild.

On offense, the line is a mess and they have no RBs worth a damn. I think Lamar Jackson is going to have to throw for close to 400 yards to keep up.

They've been winning with smoke & mirrors - QB, special teams, Hollywood Brown, Mark Andrews, Calais Campbell, and a good coaching staff. That's it. The rest have either been inconsistent (Hell, Brown himself has dropped 4 easy TDs) or just bad.

I haven't seen much of Minnesota, other than highlights. I know they have good skill guys on offense, but know nothing about their defense other than they lost their best pass rusher and have former Raven Michael Pierce. .

I'm interested to see what the line looks like with Bradbury out. I loved that they drafted him but he is not very good, except for screen passes because of his mobility. Also, can't wait to see Wyatt Davis...Udoh has had way too many penalties but has been a big upgrade from Dozier.

@Uruk-Hai I see the Vikings playing well, only to have it slip away from them in the 4th quarter...just like about every other game this year!

This might be the movable force against the resistible object, because I'm thinking the same in reverse

Zimmer yet again gets out coached in the 2nd half. Other coaches adjust during half time to go out and win, he uses the 2nd half to "Dumb" down the playbook and try to protect a lead.

Have to think the WIlf's see the writing on the wall, but are unwilling to make a move mid-season so will ride out this year and Zimmer will be one of the first let go Monday after the regular season ends..

Kirk's contract extension last year is going to choke the Salary out of this team for next year.. Have to figure that is the first thing that gets reworked during the off season as they can't take that big of a hit to the Salary cap..
2022 Base Salary .. $35 Million
2022 Dead Cap - $45 Million

This is just craziness!! I've been a fan of all sports for a long time and have never seen a team play a game each time that looks exactly the same as every other game!

I am amazed how Spielman gets a free pass when he hired Zimmer and went all in on Cousins.  Decent eye for talent but he doesn't know how to build a team.  I want him gone even more than Zimmer.  More Spielman just means another band aid drafts and another year in purple purgatory.  Not good enough to be a playoff contender but no where near the bottom of the league.

People forget that he could have passed on the entitled Cousins and drafted Lamar Jackson?  I don't know how he didn't even consider it.  What will he do when Cousins is finally gone?  Judging from his history, he signs another mediocre veteran QB and sell it like he is the second coming of Brett Favre.  I keep thinking it is better if we start from the bottom, have cap room to maneuver, build through the draft instead of being an this instant contender with obvious glaring holes.

The truly frustrating thing is its easy to argue against making any major changes. This team is 1 play per game away from being 8-0.

Agree completely! They could easily make the playoffs and have the talent to make a playoff run...they won't but they could...

They definitely need to draft a 1st round QB.. But first they are going to have to restructure/extend Cousins.. He has a Dead Cap hit next year around 45 million

Nice to see them win one of these, but sure would be nice if they'd take a 10 point lead and slam down the accelerator.. Instead they get a lead and become predictable and hope the defense can hold.

Next week.. Packers.. :oldunsure:
