Still just speculation but it looks like it may be a formality tomorrow.

I'm in. It may work, it may not. Either way it should be interesting.

 
Honestly, as a Bears(and Wolverines) fan, I think this is a good hire for the Vikings, and I would have preferred Harbaugh to Eberflus. 

Harbaugh's exit in SF had little to do with him relating to players or losing the locker room, and had everything to do with losing a battle with GM Trent Baalke(who has since proven himself to be useless without Harbaugh bailing him out) and taking the HC job at his alma mater over staying in SF while feuding with Baalke. 

The guy had a 44-19-1 record on 4 seasons, with a 5-3 record on the playoffs. That was with Alex Smith/Colin Kaepernick at QB, neither of whom was on Cousins level. Frank Gore wasn't on Dalvin Cook's level at that point, Crabtree and Boldin weren't on Jefferson and Thielen's level. The talk is Harbaugh will reunite with Vic Fangio as his DC, which is also a huge get, as Fangio is an elite DC, who was just overmatched(though he never had much help QB wise) as a HC.

I don't know why Vikings fans wouldn't be excited. I guess that may just be the nature of rooting for Minesota perhaps.

I think if Rodgers is gone, the Vikings are absolutely the NFC North favorites.

 
I have no idea why you guys are all so against Harbaugh. He was great with San Francisco, and worked with KAM before. I see a nice merge of old-school and new-school here. I'm in favor. 

 
Not to throw too much cold water on the Harbaugh truthers...but multiple things stand out about his 49ers tenure.

1) The team Harbaugh inherited was literally stacked with talent already on the roster on both sides of the ball, including several current and future Pro Bowlers: J. Staley, M. Iupati, P. Willis, N. Bowman, A. Brooks, F. Gore, Ju. Smith, D. Goldson, B. Jennings.

2) Harbaugh's record deteriorated from 13-3 the first year to 8-8 in the fourth year.

3) The 49ers defensive coordinator was Vic Fangio (credit to Harbaugh for the hire, of course but doubtful he was involved beyond that)

With the talent on this team, witnessed by all the close losses due to whimpy "coach not to lose", I'll take a 5 year ride with him as captain of the Viking ship.

1. Vikings have Cousins, Cook, Jefferson, Thielen, Hunter, Kendricks, Smith, and Ham(if Jennings counts so does Ham) who are all pro bowl guys. Plus guys like Pierce, O'Neill, and Darrisaw who could be on that level.

2. While technically true, its a little misleading. The defense lost Willis, Bowman, and Goldson, and even Brooks was even and out of the lineup all season. Justin Smith also lost a step, and subsequently retired. They still started 7-4, but petered out down the stretch as tensions between Harbaugh and Baalke were boiling over. The 49ers had no more than 4 losses in any of Harbaugh's other 3 seasons. 

3. Fangio is seemingly the favorite to be the DC if Harbaugh gets the Vikings job.

I agree and think you just hired a very-good GM in Kwesi.  I hope this isn't a shotgun marriage and that it works out because I think Kwesi will prove himself if he gets time and we all know the GM/HC relationship is crucial for both to succeed.  Fingers crossed.🤞

Jerry Burns was funny though... sort of a grumpy old man with humor and foul mouth. I'm with Andy in that my knee jerk is Harbaugh is more the 'urge to punch him in the nose' type, but I'll be able to set that aside if this team starts playing legit football. 

 
This thread is the most Vikings fan discussion I’ve ever seen. Here we might hire a guy that went to a Super Bowl and two NFC championship games with people like Alex Smith and Colin Kaepernick at quarterback. He was basically run out of town by a GM who then hired Jim Tomasulo as his replacement.  And some of you are complaining about his facial features and whether or not he is exciting in press conferences.

go find the Alex Boone interview from last night where he talked in incredibly glowing terms about playing for Jim it seems the players loved him but the front office in San Francisco didn’t. Harbaugh I also couldn’t care less about the media but he is a huge players coach.

in my opinion this is a huge get and he knows already how to work with KAM.

I was against the hire initially recalling how things were a mess when he was kicked out of San Fran. The more I hear about his time there and how players feel about him the more I like him. I'm fully on board and I think he could do amazing things here, especially given the state of the NFC in general right now.

 
Now Schefty saying Harbaugh is saying he’s committed to the Wolverines.

I for one was excited for him. 
 

So this is a downer for me.

 
@RapSheet: The #Vikings are targeting #Rams OC Kevin O’Connell to be their next head coach, per me and @TomPelissero. The hire can’t be official until after the Super Bowl. But it is expected.

I dont really know much about this guy but I am glad they are going with a younger and offensive minded coach.

 
I would’ve been fine with Harbaugh but I’m kind of glad they’re going with a younger guy who used to be a quarterback he also has experience with Kirk so it’ll be interesting to see how much she can get out of him.

Just want a coach that looks like he isn't at Sunday church mass..

Would love to need an assistant responsible for keeping the coach from being in the way of the refs, I. E. McVay.. Love watching him run down the field to celebrate with his team when they score. :thumbup:

 
Rumor seems to be Harbaugh used us as leverage to get a bigger contract from Michigan. In any case, I wasn’t overly thrilled at the prospect of him and I’d be perfectly happy with O’Connell

I've actually read he basically expected to be offered the job but some in the organization must have thought he wasn't a fit. No contract was offered which is why he reached back out to Michigan.

I hope not as well.  Most people blame Favre for the pick at the end of regulation vs the Saints that cost them the SB.  I am in the camp that it was Childress as having 12 men in the huddle coming out of a timeout that put them out of FG range was really the biggest problem.  Without that Favre wouldn't have had to try and make a play and they get a FG shot to end regulation.  I hated Childress.

I think Peterson fumbled the ball twice in that game IIRC.

It was a winnable game for sure just too many mistakes.

I agree though that Childress was a bad coach. Perhaps my least favorite as I wasnt following the team when they had Les as the coach 

As I said when everyone was calling for Zimmers head, there's no guarantee that the next coach will be better.

I heard that too.

I also heard they talked to Harbaugh for about 9 hours then ultimately did not make him an offer and that includes Kwesi.

If Kwesi really wanted ownership to hire him after 9 hours of discussion I think they would have done that.

Nothing wrong with turning over every stone and they had time to do this as well considering their other choice is still coaching right now.

Whatever PFT or whoever says though, they had a choice and decided it wasnt the best option.

 
Just heard an interesting call on KFAN. Say the Vikes new brain trust decides to see what the market will offer for Cousins... what would it cost to get Tyler Huntley from the Ravens? He was impressive when stepping in for L Jackson. Nearly as elusive and a better passer, JMHO. Obviously Lamar is their franchise QB and he's not going anywhere for a decade. Could the back-up be expendable?

Hundley is decent because of rhe system he is in.  He is a Lamar clone so unless the Vikes completely revamp their entire offense to be like the Ravens I don't think Hundley would be the right choice.

Interesting. I'd viewed the Baltimore offense as what Zimmer hoped to become. Full candor, I am no offensive scheme savant but seems to me a guy with a little elusiveness is sort of important given the state of OL. What specifically about his game would not translate over to the Viking scheme? He seemed better at reading route trees than many other QBs.

Baltimore offense is different than any inherent offense in the NFL.  They have many more QB runs and with the running ability of both Lamar and Huntley it focuses the defense completely in that.  The passing offense isn't as dynamic as most because it doesn't have to be due to the running game.  But this running game is totally different than what Zimmer was trying to do.

I've seen that reaction from other fans, and I think it's a bit of an overreaction. Did he make some mistakes with the Colts? Sure. But as I understand it, he's had quite a bit of success in his career in other roles outside of GM.

As we know, the Vikings have place an emphasis on collaboration, and if Kwesi thinks Grigson is someone he can work well with (and it seems they did just that in Cleveland), at the very least I think we should look forward to seeing how all these changes will unfold and not immediately dive into our usual fandom despair.

 
It’s exciting to turn the page. I may need to be talked off a ledge on his insta proclamation  that he’ll call plays. Having Childress flashbacks of an ego decision. JMHO a head coach has too many responsibilities to claim duties he was deprived in a prior role.

 
I don't have an issue with it. He was asked that question directly and I thought it was fine to give a straight answer. No idea what the percentage of play callers is between OC and HC, but it doesn't seem unusual for an offensive minded HC to call plays. He talked up collaboration and I trust he'll give the OC a good amount of input and be open to delegating if other responsibilities become too much.
