I remember watching it during my busboy shift at the Rueben E Lee in Newport. Ran into the bar every chance I could to catch a glimpse. During the final minutes everyone in the place was going nuts.

Wikipedia

The "Miracle on Ice" is the name in American popular culture for a medal-round men's ice hockey game during the 1980 Winter Olympics at Lake Placid, New York, on February 22. The United States team, made up of amateur and collegiate players and led by coach Herb Brooks, defeated the Soviet team, who were considered to be the best ice hockey team in the world at the time.

Team USA went on to win the gold medal by winning its last match over Finland. The Soviet Union took the silver medal by beating Sweden in its final game. As part of its 100th anniversary celebrations in 2008, the International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) chose the "Miracle on Ice" as the number-one international ice hockey story of the century.[1]

Seriously? You haven't googled any of this to verify that your memory might not be as good as you think.
You do realize that just about anybody can enter or edit a wiki entry, right?
I do know that. try this from SISI

on the last slide with the notes:

Many forget that the U.S. still needed to defeat Finland to secure the gold medal, and came back from a 2-1 third period deficit to win 4-2, thus finalizing "the Miracle" as such.
And, if memory serves, the Russian coach gave the US team a pep talk before the third period.

Actually I believe that was the 1960 Gold Medal game

No way in this day in age Brooks would have been allowed to push his team to those degrees. Dude was an animal, genius.

35 years ago this weekend. A big get together is planned for the team. Should be interesting. Still need to see the 30 for 30 they did. :kicksrock:

Remember watching the "live tv" version with my dad. Yes I know it was taped but back then you had no instant access.
I was a 12 year old hockey geek watching this when a DBag newsreader from Detroit comes on during a commercial break in the second intermission (with the US trailing 3-2) to do a live tease of the upcoming 11 o'clock news, he ends it with "don't worry, the US pulls it out."

My dad was as well. A few days later he brought me home a photocopy of a cartoon someone had drawn showing the hockey team replacing the soldiers in the Iwo Jima memorial. If memory serves me correct they were shoving the flag into Parts Unknown of the Ayatollah Khomeni. Wish I still had that.
