Mixed Nuts - which nut is king? (1 Viewer)

Nuts are defined as a simple, dry fruit with one seed (very occasionally two) in which the seed case wall becomes very hard at maturity. True nuts include pecan, sweet chestnut, beech, acorns, hazel, hornbeam and alder. Peanuts, almonds, pistachios, cashews, horse chestnuts and pine nuts are not nuts.

just kidding. It’s definitely cashews.

Iranian Pistachios
Going with pistachio...At the specialty fruit/meat market I shop at they have nuts in bulk.  Cashews are around 20.00 a lb. Shelled pistachios 25.00 a lb.  I am there twice a week and usually grab a handful of the pistachios or cashews while shopping.   Have to be into them for 2-3 lbs in the last year.    I spend so much there I feel like I have it coming...like a rewards program.

Going to try the macadamia next time.

Mixed nuts are just a ploy by peanut, almond, brazil nuts, and hazelnuts to band together and leech off of the goodness of cashews.

Pecans can stand on their own.

It's basically the Cheerleader Effect, but with nuts.  Cashews are getting a raw deal, and Pecans aren't coming out in good shape either.

Peanuts, are the freeloaders of the bunch.  So much so that Mixed Nuts makers have to advertise how few Peanuts are in a container to make sure we still buy them.  "Less than 50% Peanuts!"

Saw the thread and what immediately popped into my head but a little Dre...

"I wanna ask you one question: if I had some nuts, hanging on the wall, what did I have honey?"
I said, "Darling you'd have some walnuts"
She said, "Well, daddy if I had some nuts on my chest, would those be chestnuts?"
I said, "Hell yeah"
She said, "Well daddy if I had nuts under my chin would those be chin-nuts?”

???

Cashew > Pecan > Almond > Brazil > Peanut > Hazelnut   This is the typical combination I see in mixed nuts, but I would insert Pistachio > Macadamia between the pecans and almonds if I was just ranking in general.

Nice.  I think I would put both of those in Group 1 with the cashews.

Never. But you can get them right here.
That looks good... might order some of those. Never had Iranian pistachios and never tried watermelon seeds. I loooove roasted garbanzo beans, tho.

also, Fancy Mixed Nuts from Persian Basket.... [henryford]title of your sex tape[/henryford]

Mixed Nuts - which nut is king?
The traditional Planters mixed nuts contains the following ingredients: PEANUTS, ALMONDS, CASHEWS, PECANS, BRAZIL NUTS, PEANUT OIL, SEA SALT.

Peanuts are legumes. Almonds, cashews and Brazil nuts are seeds. Pecans are actual nuts. Just because they are marketed commercially as 'nuts' it doesn't mean that they are actually nuts. Therefore the answer to your question is, by default, pecans. Thank you.

The question is, I think, how much you'll give me for them.

My vote is the almond. Well, it'd probably be pecans, but let's be real here. No reasonably priced mix is going to have a significant amount of pecans. I like cashews well enough, but clearly not as much as most of you. In fact, I think I like the humble peanut (criminally underrated) as well as cashews I like the creaminess of a cashew, but ultimately I always start to wish they had a just a little more crunch.

Mixed nuts are near and dear to my heart. Sam's recently stopped carrying Planter's. At first I was concerned, but Sam's replaced them with, imo, a superior product. A lot of folks seemed concerned about the Sam's nuts not carrying the "less than 50% peanut" guarantee that Planter's had. A. Peanuts are good and 2. a few more peanuts is a small price to pay as they brilliantly just got rid of the damn Brazil Nut altogether the Sam's mix. The Sam's mix also seems fresher and crunchier than the Planter's mix.

$13 for 54 oz of a delicious, Brazil Nut-free mix is a heck of a bargain.

The Planters Deluxe Mixed Nuts with Sea Salt that Sam's stopped carrying had no peanuts in them, but did have Brazil nuts. They were very good. Sam's knockoff of the deluxe mixed nuts isn't as good in my opinion. It is less salty, and it has no Brazil nuts.

Brazil nuts and pistachios tie as my favorite nut.

Yep...those 3-4 pecans you get are like little treasures, which should tell everyone they are the superior nut.  Let the peasants have their cashews but give more more pecans dammit

I guess you haven't had iranian Pistachios.
Look for pistachios branded under “Setton.”

Their first grade nuts are classified as Jumbo.

Setton replaced Wonderful as the provider to the Kirkland/Costco label in the past year and are noticeably larger, with fewer insect bites, and better tasting.

My rankings:

1. Almonds (the most versatile nut in terms of taste. Blends very well with all manner of spices and flavorings. I can polish off 3 cans of Blue Diamond Sweet Thai Chili and Habanaro BBQ before halftime.)

2. Pistachios (best stand-alone flavor. Not as flexible when it comes to flavorings, but that's a minor issue. I buy them in the shell so that I at least burn some calories opening them. Otherwise I end up eating them by the handful.)

3. Hazelnuts (smooth, elegant taste. Maybe a little bland, but in a classy way.)

4. Cashews (as with almonds, they are versatile when it comes to flavorings. I don't have a high tolerance for the raw cashews, though.)

5. Pecans (not a big fan of plain pecans, but I do love me a pecan pie)

6. Macadamias (these things are nothing special but have their place as a complimentary flavor. I don't need them in my mixed nuts, though).

7. Peanuts (can't stand them plain, but can tolerate certain flavored varieties)

---- list of edible nuts ends here ----

Brazil Nuts (tastes like dried newspapers with an aftertaste of chalk dust)
Walnuts (pathetic pecan imitator. Ruiner of all homemade cookies of my youth.)
