Or not. The IWW called for just that in the early part of the last century. This is old stuff. It will be fun when these students try similar tactics with their future employers.

Answer: Social media. Which is all about how many ways people can say "hey, look at me" and how many hits can I get. Not at all saying racism doesn't still exist, but the attention whores flock to this sort of stuff and it gets way overblown. Especially when the media filters everything that doesn't fit the narrative and amplifies the stuff that does.I just don't know ... seemed like race relations should be better today than at any random point a quarter century ago. Yet things appear appallingly worse. What is the deal? Have expectations changed or something?
Already happening at U of Alabama and Ole MissThat's what the NCAA is so afraid of. The players have a lot of power if they use it.so what happens when the next (insert any major college FB or BB team) decides to 'protest' and not play until (insert demand of the day) is met?

http://www.mediaite.com/online/college-safe-space-boos-an-asian-woman-for-declaring-black-people-can-be-racist/College ‘Safe Space’ Boos an Asian Woman For Declaring ‘Black People Can Be Racist’Students at a “safe space” at Claremont McKenna College in California shut down an Asian woman who was describing racial harassment by a black man, booing her when she declared, “black people can be racist.”
“I came to this country five years ago when I was fifteen, alone, through a boarding school in Pennsylvania,” the Asian student began. “And all I heard is, ‘if you don’t speak English, go home.’ ‘If you don’t speak good English, go home.’ ‘I don’t date Asians,’ and ‘I’d like to have sex with a girl from all the continents that’s why I want to date you.'”
She then recounted a time when she and a group of friends were walking down the street, and a black man pulled over and shouted, “go back to your home!” She said a “white lady” stopped to ask if the young women needed police assistance.
“The point I’m making here is that we should not distinguish people by their race or gender or anything. Black people can be racist,” she declared, at which point a black woman holding a sign that reads “It’s too late to say sorry” approached her.
“Oh no honey,” someone in the crowd said over a chorus of boos.
A few “safe space” participants told their peers to let the young woman talk. “Let her finish,” someone suggested.
“I just mean we have to look at people individually,” the Asian woman said, telling her fellow classmates they should “look at the heart. The action, not the race.”
As other members approached the woman and grabbed for the microphone, someone in the crowd asked, “how is this relevant to the college failing to provide a space for people of color?”
Ah finally the actual list of demands. They either need to hire 414 new black staff and faculty or replace 370 whites with blacks to meet student demands.

I. We demand that the University of Missouri System President, Tim Wolfe, writes a handwritten apology to the Concerned Student 1950 demonstrators and holds a press conference in the Mizzou Student Center reading the letter. In the letter and at the press conference, Tim Wolfe must acknowledge his white male privilege, recognize that systems of oppression exist, and provide a verbal commitment to fulfilling Concerned Student 1950 demands. We want Tim Wolfe to admit to his gross negligence, allowing his driver to hit one of the demonstrators, consenting to the physical violence of bystanders, and lastly refusing to intervene when Columbia Police Department used excessive force with demonstrators.
II. We demand the immediate removal of Tim Wolfe as UM system president. After his removal a new amendment to UM system policies must be established to have all future UM system president and Chancellor positions be selected by a collective of students, staff, and faculty of diverse backgrounds.
III. We demand that the University of Missouri meets the Legion of Black Collegians' demands that were presented in 1969 for the betterment of t he black community.
IV. We demand that the University of Missouri creates and enforces comprehensive racial awareness and inclusion curriculum throughout all campus departments and units, mandatory for all students, faculty, staff, and administration. This curriculum must be vetted, maintained, and overseen by a board comprised of students, staff, and faculty of color.
V. We demand that by the academic year 2017-2018, the University of Missouri increases the percentage of black faculty and staff campuswide to 10%.
VI. We demand that the University of Missouri composes a strategic 10 year plan by May 1, 2016 that will increase retention rates for marginalized students, sustain diversity curriculum and training, and promote a more safe and inclusive cam pus.
VII. We demand that the University of Missouri increases funding and resources for the University of Missouri Counseling Center for the purpose of hiring additional mental health professionals; particularly those of color, boosting mental health outreach and programming across campus, increasing campuswide awareness and visibility of the counseling center, and reducing lengthy wait times for prospective clients.
VIII. We demand that the University of Missouri increases funding, resources, and personnel for the social justices centers on campus for the purpose of hiring additional professionals, particularly those of color, boosting outreach and programming across campus, and increasing campuswide awareness and visibility.

I work in higher ed, and I'd say with some confidence that the challenge would be finding enough faculty (and staff) with the necessary qualifications ...particularly doctorally-qualified faculty for tenure-track positions. They either need to hire 414 new black staff and faculty or replace 370 whites with blacks to meet student demands.

That's a little weird. What for?Mizzou student president Peyton Head made 4 trips to the White House![]()
If they want a free education give them a library card and wish them well.saw a 'protest' in Philly on TV- Temple students DEMANDING free tuition, student loan forgiveness, AND $15 minimum wage! Apparently similar 'protests' were happening at
Vanderbilt and Iowa.. WE DEMAND IT!!![]()

Saw some stuff on this as well. Call themselves the "million student march", but from what I heard the total number of students at all the Universities who participated was only like 3k, so they're going to each need to bring a few friends with them next time.saw a 'protest' in Philly on TV- Temple students DEMANDING free tuition, student loan forgiveness, AND $15 minimum wage! I thought this angle was the most fascinating part of this story, surprised it's not getting more play. These sort of campus protest movements flare up from time to time, maybe some people change some attitudes or policies going forward, some people complain about "these kids today," but generally they don't amount to much in the long run.Already happening at U of Alabama and Ole MissThat's what the NCAA is so afraid of. Football players exercising their limitless power over universities, on the other hand? That might be just getting started. Could be a whole new world. After fighting pay and unionizing for athletes for so long the NCAA members might actually find that they're better off allowing those things, because paid players would be less inclined to strike and under a CBA they likely wouldn't be able to do so at all midseason. In the current state of affairs the football and basketball teams run the school. Can you think of anything the Alabama players couldn't get if they refused to play unless it was granted?
That's the FIRST thing they could get. The school's already given them at least four that they didn't actually win. They probably didn't even have to ask for them.a national title?I thought this angle was the most fascinating part of this story, surprised it's not getting more play. AKA- OpportunismTo be clear.. I don't think anyone would say there's not some degree of injustice going on. However the way this is being handled is absolutely absurd and is to the detriment of the greater cause. Instead of being perceived as just in their plight... these kids come off as entitled twits piggybacking a real cause and riding it into the ground.

I don't think we can make that assumption at all. It doesn't take all the players in a program, just enough of them.Let's not pretend players at the real schools are going to skip out on playing... guys who are on track to play in the NFL aren't going to jeopardize that over some trumped up
I'm just shocked someone would click a link to a youtube video of Alan Dershowitz weighing in on anything.I rarely agree with Alan Dershowitz on anything but he nails it here.

NFL teams are not gonna pass up talents because they decide not to play a few games in college. And it wouldn't have to just be for, as you so eloquently put it, "some trumped up cause-head's hissy fit." It could be for anything. They could ask for a larger medical staff. They could ask for better food in the cafeterias. They could get the school president fired and replaced by Mike Ditka. Or they could ask to get paid for play. It doesn't matter. They run the school.Let's not pretend players at the real schools are going to skip out on playing... guys who are on track to play in the NFL aren't going to jeopardize that over some trumped up cause-head's hissy fit. Now second rate schools with players on the last leg of their career? More likely.
This whole thing reminds me of my pop when I was a kid:
"You wanna give you something to cry about?!"
They're gonna demand that the rules restricting them from making income on their talent are dismantled. That's the main target now. And the schools ought to negotiate this issue now instead of waiting for boycotts and losses in court (after spending millions to defend themselves).NFL teams are not gonna pass up talents because they decide not to play a few games in college. If anything comes out of this long term I think this is what it will be. They don't have to fight the NCAA or the schools to change the rules or get what they want. They have the ultimate trump card, and Missouri was the first team to realize that and play it.
Brenda Smith-Lezama, vice president of the Missouri Students Association, appeared on MSNBC Tuesday afternoon to express her disdain at people using their First Amendment rights to create a "hostile" and "unsafe" learning environment. Smith-Lezama advocated for a safe space for "healing" rather than "experiencing a lot of hate."
MSNBC host Thomas Roberts asked Smith-Lezama to respond to a professor who "complained" universities are becoming intolerant of opposing views.
"One professor complained universities are becoming places of prohibition," Roberts said. "What's your feeling? Do you believe that's a place we are heading for American campuses now? "
"I personally am tired of hearing that first amendment rights protect students when they are creating a hostile and unsafe learning environment for myself and for other students here," Smith-Lezama said on MSNBC. "I think that it's important for us to create that distinction and create a space where we can all learn from one another and start to create a place of healing rather than a place where we are experiencing a lot of hate like we have in the past."
Smith-Lezama said the treatment of a student journalist who was accosted on Monday should be a "teachable moment" for those who approach the protestors with "hostility."
"I think it's a teachable moment for all of us," she said of the incident. "I also think it's important to remember that as student journalists, you cannot approach these type of situations with hostility and with anger because it only escalates the situation."http://www.realclearpolitics.com/video/2015/11/10/missouri_student_vp_im_tired_of_hearing_people_use_first_amendment_rights_to_create_hostile_atmosphere.html
You know that "1950" in "Concerned Students 1950" refers to the first year that black students were admitted to the University of Missouri, right? Four years after WWII ended a whole bunch of those racist mother####### were still refusing to even let black people go to school with them. Say what you will of this generation, but I don't think the previous generations have a lot to be proud of here either. Why stop at the revocation of First Amendment rights or "safe spaces"? How about "Merit Badges for Millennials"?
Worst.
Generation.
Ever.
(WWII vets are thinking, "We fought and died for this?")
Can you unpack this?Racism at U of M is still alive and well. Your generation has just flipped the coin to the other side.
