MJD vs. the Jets (1 Viewer)

Every week when I set my lineups, I use the MyFBG section to review Dodds'/Bloom's projections to make sure I'm not missing anything.

Usually it is pretty cut and dried for the most part (save a last flex spot or something), but rarely do I see anything that gives me pause. But this week is an exception with MJD. Both Dodds & Bloom have his production very low this week vs. the Jets. For several years now in my dynasty league I have been starting MJD without hesitation week in and week out.

Last week it was clear that (1) MJD is the main back and (2) they want to save him when possible. I'm thinking that this week vs. the Jets, it will not be a game to "save" him. It will either be close or the Jags will be playing catch up. Either way, he will be on the field IMO. Are people just expecting a bunch of 3 and outs vs. the heralded Jets defense, or is there fear of MJD losing carries? I can't fathom not starting MJD, but according to the projections, it isn't even close.

What are the prevailing thoughts out there? Is the Jets defense that good? Is it the fear of MJD losing carries to Karim? Is MJD no longer considered a "stud"?

Here's my take as an MJD owner:

1. MJD looked great last week. Healthy, ran hard, scored once and just missed a second TD. Everything the Jags and MJD said in the preseason looked to be in place against the Titans.

2. He's still a stud. No doubt about that in my mind. My only concern about him entering the season was health and he looks healthy right now.

3. Despite Karim's presence, MJD still got 24 carries. That's a huge number - especially coming off a major injury. That tells me the Jags believe he's healthy although they don't want to overwork him (hence his long absence in the fourth quarter especially).

4. I am concerned about his lack of involvement in the passing game. That trend began last season and it looks like it may continue this season. Perhaps that'll change if the Jags are forced to play from behind and that could occur this week.

5. The Jets' defense is very good and I don't expect a huge game from MJD as a result but given his stud talent he starts for me every week if healthy. I'll just lower my expectations for him this week.

I'm thinking #4 has a lot to do with MJD in my league. We are receiving heavy (0.2/rec yd vs. 0.1/rush yd), and a lack of receiving stats for MJD really pulls him down the list. But despite that, he was still RB 15 last week without a single catch and he didn't really even play late in the game.

Conspiracy theory and all--and not to hi-jack the thread--but after the way they dropped Garrard do you think Jags would trade MJD before the deadline and use the first couple of weeks to see what they have in Karim? Doesn't seem like they care about alienating Jax fans and they are a likely contender to end up in LA?

Thoughts?

I have to start him as I have no other options

I am expecting a decent game from him, but nothing crazy. yes they need to get him some screens and short passes to move the chains vs. the jets or it will be a long day

I could actually see a pretty good day from MJD. Right now, the Jags only valid receiving option is Mike Thomas and he will be on Revis island. The passes will have to go somewhere, so I can see MJD having a very solid day PPR wise. Felix Jones didn't do too bad last Sunday night against the Jets D.

Yeah, I recognize this game. I played it last week with Ray Rice. The HE** I'm benching MJD - you can do whatever ya want but he's a stud.

MJD is a better player than Felix Jones, and Jones put up acceptable numbers against the Jets last week (I believe he would have had 16 points in a PPR, if not for the last second fumble on the lateral).

JDR is set on keeping him healthy so that he's not too banged up come playoff push time. And considering what Deji has shown, that's looking like a good idea. Unfortunately, I have MJD and am getting the feel that he's not going to give me the numbers I was expecting until later in the season. I'm actually considering sitting MJD AND Foster (assuming he goes) and starting Tolbert and Mathews. Clearly, I must be brain-damaged.

As for the suggestion that the Jags might consider trading him? I have a hard time seeing that happening. Not if they have any interest in succeeding this year anyway. But you never know with these guys and MJD seems to have something negative to say after the game more often over the last year than I recall being the case in the past. I wouldn't put anything past that organization.

Felix caught three passes against the Jets. MJD only caught three passes or more in five games last season and didn't have any receptions in Week 1. I think the Jags should get him more involved in the passing game and this week would be a good matchup to do it. I'm just not sure they will.

Here is how I look at it:

You are probably going to get 4th rounder value from him this season...not terrible, but certainly not bad either. I do the same thing you do; have lineups already set in my mind, and then look at the FBG material to see whether I am missing something. There have certainly been instances where they were off, but others where they were dead on (like Ingram this past week). Now, going into week 2, whether I view him as a second or fourth rounder, it is going to take an injury (and not a matchup) for me to bench him. Sure as time goes on, if he falters, I may ride the hot hand, but given we are just in week two, how do we really know who is hot? I wrote this in another thread, but 13 QBs threw for 300+ yards this weekend. My guess is that by the end of the year, at least one of those guys gets replaced due to bad play and another couple fall outside of the top 20. MJD showed us what we needed to know, so I think you have to ride him more. personally, I am always more frustrated if I have a player who has a good game and I sit him, versus a bad game and I started him.

The Jets will completely stifle the Jags. They will load up the box to stuff MJD and blitz McCown. They will try and make McCown beat them on quick slants, and even then,

they are ready for it with their excellent secondary. If the Jets can get any kind of running game going, they should win this easy.

Yep. I think it's safe to assume that they view the Jags number one weakness to exploit as McCown and his inexperience. They're going to throw the kitchen sink at him and force him to make mistakes. This is not going to bode well for MJD. It's hard to sit him, but I probably will. And this has little to do with his first week or the fact that JDR is planning on lightening his work load early on.

Well, Dodds has him adjusted up now to where I expect him to be this week. Not top 12, but still worth starting.

CRISIS AVERTED!

Bench MJD if your in a keeper league and are hoarding a ton of RBs or play in a 8 man league. MJD is my RB1. He won't be benched

Go ahead bench him.

Like all the ### clowns who benched Ray Rice vs Pitt.

YOu draft a guy in the first round or 2nd for that matter to start each and every week.

Don't get cute. 9/10 you will pay for it.

This is a game the Jags have historically played above themselves and surprised the fans and the Jets. In their last match-up in 2009, MJD ran for something like 124 yards and the Jags won 24-22 in NY. They've actually won 6 of the last 7 against the Jets. Obviously, past wins don't guarantee future success, but the Jags play the Jets well, and really get up for this game.

As for MJD in particular, he isn't being phased out, the coaches just want to make sure to ease him into this season. Some games he will have 20 touches and some games he'll have north of 30-he's going to get plenty of touches. If the coaches left it up to MJD, he's the type of player who would run himself into the ground. The organization wants to get back into the mode of having a two pronged rushing attack backed up by an opportunistic passing game, ala Taylor and MJD, and they are going to begin that this season. It's obvious that they wanted Jennings to be part of that, but they are probably going to still try to make it work to a lesser extent with Karim and a little Owens. I think the 47 rushes last week shows what they want to happen:ball control.

MJD is a stud; He's healthy; And he's going to get lots of touches this week no matter the score. I think it will be tough for the Jags to win this one in NY, but I also think MJD's looking for a statement game this week, and I'm not as down on the Jags chances as many others are this week. In my opinion, teams always want to force the Jags to throw against them- that's nothing new-and it shouldn't deter people from playing MJD.

Sit Drew and be pissed that he goes off this week. So you draft a guy in the first round and in week 2 you are going to bench him. Not a good move. But Good Luck.

That might be the longest post I've ever agreed with 100%. Well said, I wouldn't change a thing.

Isn't that exactly what happened to the Jags last week? And will happen in week 3 and every week but their bye week? And MJD still had a good game. So what if the Jets win? So what if the Jets win in a route? The Jags have nobody else. Even if they're down by 28 at the half, they aren't going into a 2 minute drill and passing the entire second half. Their only hope is to control the clock to keep the other team off the field. Start MJD. The Jets are going to smoke the Jags. So what? This isn't your weekly pickem. This is FFB....
