What do the sharks think about MJD bouncing back and being relevant again? Does he make it back to pre-injury form and re-enter the top 5 RB rankings?

If MJD can get healthy it'll be interesting to see how having two legit WRs on the outside helps the running game. Especially if Gabbert can take as big a step in his third year as he did in his second.

He had 343 carries in 2011. 40 more than the second closest. I doubt this team wants to return to the times where he was the sole focal point of the offense.

They don't have much choice at the moment. Also he's in the last year of the deal so they can run him as much as they want and let him go next year.

Look at what Blackmon and Shorts did once they were in the starting lineup together. They were phenomenal.Ok... just looked this up and it's even more ridiculous than I thought. From Week 7 through Week 17, here are the league leaders in terms of WR receiving yards:
Code:
1	DET	2189	122	DAL	2185	163	JAX	2148	124	IND	2112	125	TB	2013	126	DEN	1940	197	ATL	1908	118	NO	1877	129	GB	1806	2110	HOU	1758	5
It took a lot more attempts than other teams since the QBs are inaccurate, but it's still impressive.

No kidding??? Who cares if they threw for 3,000 yards? They lost most of those games because they had no balance. Just because they had a lot of throwing yards without MJD doesn't mean he won't go back to being a focal point of the offense when healthy. Or, at the very least, half of the offense a la Ray Rice and Foster. I'm much more concerned about his foot than the receivers taking touches away from him. If his foot is healthy I can see him getting back to top 5 production with less touches, which benefits everyone. Less touches because they have receiver threats now, which means defenses can't stack the box against him. If MJD is sitting there in the 3rd/4th in re-drafts next year I would consider it a steal (again, assuming his foot is doing well during training camp).

The previous poster was saying that it was still 2011, where MJD was the only choice. So the point was the the team does have another option than MJD. They can throw the ball. And when the WRs catch it they're good enough to do damage.

That was my point, this team isn't going to turn into a passing team but expecting MJD to get the carries necessary to bounce back to a top 5 performance is being overly optimistic. Thats assuming he's healthy. Foster and Rice also get a ton of work because their teams don't typically have to play catchup and give up on the run. The jags don't often have that luxury.

Someone is going to overpay on MJD based on history and name value. I don't think its going to be me.

He lost his job last year.Given the changes in the front office and the coaching staff, I don't think it's clear that Jax is at all committed to Gabbert.

 He started every game (IIRC), including Week 11 when he got injured and was put on IR.

Also, he was so bad in 2011 that getting a lot better in 2012 meant he was still well below average.

Blaine Gabbert has been benched.

Gabbert's elbow injury has him questionable for Week 12, but coach Mike Mularkey said at Monday's presser he's been benched regardless. Unless Chad Henne utterly face-plants, it's likely the No. 10 pick of the 2011 draft — a player GM Gene Smith traded up for — has made his final start of 2012, and possibly his career. Gabbert simply hasn't been good enough through 691 career passes, completing just 372 of them (53.8 percent) while posting a 70.2 QB rating, 6.0 YPA and 21:17 TD:INT ratio. The Jaguars offense looked like it was out on bail after Gabbert was benched Sunday. Jimmy Clausen is going to have competition for No. 3 jobs in 2013.

They don't have much choice at the moment. Also he's in the last year of the deal so they can run him as much as they want and let him go next year. They should bring in a guy cheap like Shonn Greene to get the ugly yards, while keeping MJD fresh. While I usually agree with the mentality of running the wheels off your RB in his last year of contract, I also think MJD is past that point, and both parties would be better served with a plodder who can steal some ugly carries.

He had a great year in 2011, he struggled before getting hurt last year but he also held out and missed training camp and the pre season. He would definitely not be the first player to hold out and then struggle upon returning. Personally I usually trade away anyone who holds out just for that reason. The number of carries he got in 2011 was also a concern, but coming off a season of rest and no longer holding out for a contract, I'd say he's a buy low

re: GabbertIt doesn't matter what Gene Smith or Mularkey said/did last year. New QB coach Scelfo and GM Dave Caldwell both supported Gabbert. It wouldn't surprise me if he's the Opening Day starter in 2013. Barring an uptick in production, it WOULD surprise me if the Jags re-up him to be the starter for 2014 and beyond.

Florida State quarterback E.J. Manuel and North Carolina State quarterback Mike Glennon, each of whom are projected to be drafted in April, graduated high school in 2008, the same year as Gabbert. Scelfo said Monday if Gabbert were entering the draft this year he likely would be the first quarterback – and perhaps one of the first players – selected.“This is his draft class,” Scelfo said. “If he would be coming out, with the quarterback class the way it is, would he be the top guy taken? I think the answer would be yes. If you asked scouting departments and general managers around the league, I think you’d end up with a yes on that.”Gabbert has struggled at times in his first two seasons, completing 210 of 413 passes for 2,214 yards and 12 touchdowns with 11 interceptions in 14 starts as a rookie and 162-of-278 passes for 1,662 yards and nine touchdowns with six interceptions in 10 starts last season.

I wouldn't count on him being a Top 20 back let alone a Top 5 back until I see him in training camp.I hope he's healthy but after the huge number of touches from 2009-2011, there's no guarantee he'll ever be the same back.
