Behind Doc Halladay's 1-0 complete game shutout, Phils become first team to clinch a playoff berth.
Which isn't a good thing. I think I saw on ESPN that since the beginning of the wild card in 1995, the team that has clinched first had won the World Series three times while losing in the first round six times.

I bet none of those teams had Halladay, Lee, Hamels and a team on a mission! :)

There have been a lot of teams trying to buy championships.

Come on...Maddux, SMoltz, Glavine? Philly should be the overwhelming favorite to win this thing....but they could lose three games in the NLDS 3-1, 2-0 and 3-2.

How pissed are the redsox going to be if the Rangers take a knee this weekend and let the Angels back into the playoffs.

I really do think the Royals are gonna be good next year. At least offensively, they have some serious talent establishing themselves this year and waiting in the wings for next. If they add a few vet arms to solidify the rotation, they are gonna be good pretty soon.

Rangers would rather play the Red Sox than Detroit or Tampa at this point. Let's hope we don't take a knee...
Rangers have zero chance of playing Detroit, it's not possible until the ALCS.
AL East Champ Yankees Best recordAL Central Tigers

AL West Rangers

Wild Card Angels (as responded to in previous post)

ALDS Matchups

Yankees-Angels

Tigers-Rangers

Unless I am missing something???? Chances are low, but greater than zero.

Actually according to coolstandings under the "dumb" playoff picture chances of that matchup are 1.2%. My link

I'm interested to see if the club thinks they're entering their window and spends some money this offseason.

Isn't their entire rotation pretty horrible though? I mean Hochevar is alright I guess as a 4/5, but then who? I haven't been impressed with Duffy at all the 3 times I saw him this year. Chen? Francis? Am I forgetting someone?I also think some of their bats (Melky, Francouer) come back down to Earth next year as well.

pretty sure they have two top pitching prospects still not called up. Is Montgomery one?? Forgot the other one

Duffy hasn't been great at the MLB level. Montgomery walked way too many at AAA but still has good looking stuff. Crow looks better suited for relief.Their 2011 staff numbers are near the bottom of the AL in almost every category so they need help from somewhere to even threaten .500 next year.

I doubt they would spend the money for CC to opt out, but they could go after pitchers like Bedard, Kuroda, or Buehrhle.

Bedard's made of ######Kuroda's not leaving left coastBuehrle...... Can't see him going anywhere but STL or staying with CHW. Retiring after this contract has been the talk since the ink went on it.

According to the Associated Press, Leo Nunez was sent back to the Dominican Republic this week because he was found to have been using a fake name.

Nunez was placed on the restricted list Thursday and is not expected to return to the major leagues this season. According go the AP's sources, the right-hander's real name is Juan Carlos Oviedo and he's actually a year older than his listed age of 28. The Marlins have reportedly known about the issue for several months, but it's not yet clear how they plan to resolve it.

In related news, it was discovered that Albert Pujols is actually 38, instead of his reported 31 years of age.

Wouldn't that make the Cubs the front runners to give him a ridiculous contract? "Give him the Soriano special..."

We Cub fans have a small glimmer of hope that things are actually changing in Wrigley. Let us have that at least until the next regime starts makings its own obvious mistakes.

I wonder if they won't face stiff fines as an employer. How could they not be more proactive in finding a solution to that situation?

It's unlikely Nunez/Oviedo will be able to get a visa to pitch in the US. When Alexi Ogando pleaded guilty to other immigration offenses, he was barred from entering the US for five years.

Adjust your Japanese fantasy leagues accordingly, in that case?

:lmao: at the DBacks going out and celebrating in the pool :lmao:
The celebration was a bit over the top, but for as bad as they were last year I say let em celebrate, glad they could get it out now well before the playoffs. Hopefully they can stay focussed and be somewhat pesky to the Brewers/Phillies.

Tie-breaking games have been set. If Sox/Rays need a one game playoff, it will be played Thursday in Tampa. Braves/Cards would play in St Louis on Thursday as well.

Hey why don't runners, when tagging up, get a running start? Against the rules.. What's the rule exactly?

Holy Christ is Jerry annoying, that accent is pathetic. They are look to have my old GB Orsillo to balance things out.
