Mlive.com reporting stafford will be named comeback POY (1 Viewer)

I would've gone with macgahee. I didn't think Stafford had the requisite 'death' of a career to comeback from.

Detroit Lions quarterback Matthew Stafford will be named the NFL's Comeback Player of the Year by Pro Football Weekly and the Pro Football Writers Association, according to a report on mlive.com.

Stafford threw for 41 touchdowns against 16 interceptions this season, leading the Lions to a 10-6 record and a trip to the playoffs for the first time since 1999.

His 5,038 passing yards in 2011 puts him in rare company. The only other players to eclipse 5,000 passing yards in a season are Dan Marino, Drew Brees and Tom Brady.

Stafford, 23, was the first overall pick in the 2009 draft out of Georgia.

The Associated Press' Comeback Player of the Year will be announced Feb. 4, the day before the Super Bowl, according to the report.

2 season ending injuries in 2 years- then a season that would have been top 3 MVP in any other season= comeback POY

Disagree. The two prior years were INCs not C's, D's, or F's. IMO comeback implies you were washed up/written off etc. This guy was just injured for the first 2 years of his career. Now a guy like Macgahee was cut after being demoted to backup RB by 2 teams and was signed to backup a third before he put together a now pro bowl caliber season. I don't consider stafford (or any third year pros) eligible for this award yet imho.

So Victor Cruz should also have a shot at comeback player of the year since he was injured all of last year and then had a huge season this year.

He hasn't had enough of a career to come back from and didn't play well enough previously to "come back". Come back implies was good, played worse, and is good again.

He is just getting really good, not coming back from anything but not getting injured and learning to play QB in the NFL better. "Breakout" player maybe, but not "comeback".

Exactly. It always amuses me how confused those giving out this award are about the meaning.

When I think "comeback" I'm thinking more "Kevin Smith-ish". That dude was sitting on his couch and then the phone rang...

That's weird isn't that usually reserved for players who were once good and then derailed by an injury or bad play?

Stafford sucked as a rookie was ok and injured in year 2 and broke out in year 3... Breakout player? ok. Comeback player? not so much.

Off the top of my head I would think Marshawn Lynch or McGahee would be a better choice

I think that Steve Smith should have been in the running. Stafford isn't really "coming back" from anything. His first two seasons ended in injury, so he was never at a level that put him as a top player. He is more of a "breakout".

Hahah, posted this before I saw the post just above me. Agreed.

Any cred that Pro Football Weekly and the Pro Football Writers Association DID have continues to disentegrate faster than the Bears chances of landing a good GM.

Reggie Bush & Alex Smith  would be 2 other guys who I think should get this award before stafford.
Marshawn Lynch came to mind as well.
:goodposting: How is the season Skittles had not right at the top of the list for this?
He had less to climb out of than the other guys. He has ha some good years lately. I thinka good barometer would be the point value jump in youur madden stats from one year to the next.In madden Lynch would have been like an 78 that made the jump to 84.Alex Smith was like a 67 that made a jump to 86.

Some people thought Smith was brought back because he gave them the best shot to lose the games to get Luck. Now theyre 7 minutes rom the super bowl. That should be enough.
