A husband comes home from work early and hears his wife being unfaithful. As he approaches the bedroom, the other man runs out the back door and he finds his wife naked, a used condom, and the man's shirt on the floor. He then does one of the following

A) He beats his wife

B) He beats his pet cat

I'm going with C) He rejects violence as a response.

I voted a in both polls. b in the second poll sounds awful because it is really wrong to hurt the innocent animal, but voting b is tantamount to saying dude she's right there.

Through a long grapevine this comes back to religion and the premise that humans are somehow more important than any other living being on the planet. An idea I do not subscribe to.

Voted A in both.  Humans are more important than any animal.  I do think the second question is close.  The first isn't close at all.

Voted A B.  In a vacuum A A.

I think the circumstances matter.  There is no situation where I can "understand" abusing a pet.. they don't know better.  Catching the wife cheating I could understand the possibility of psychologically snapping and doing something stupid without thinking (taking "morality" out of it).

Please do not conflate "understand" with "condone".

What is going on in here today? topics about beating women  and not loving some relatives as much as others. Obviously nuking all the political threads was a bad idea.

I assume, then, that you're vegan?  And, if I set a mouse trap, should I go to jail?

B. Animals are just so helpless and defenceless against abuse. People have avenues to protect themselves and remove themselves from the situation. Not saying it is an easy situation to get out of or that domestic violence is not a terribly awful thing.

Why are humans more important than animals?  And why is importance the measuring stick, in your opinion?  Not saying you're wrong (I might disagree, though) but genuinely interested in your response.

Anyone voting A, B... what if you deserved getting cheated on?
There is never is situation where you "deserved" to get cheated on.  Ever.  Do it the right way and get a divorce or break up w/your significant other.

While cheating provides instant gratification, in the long run it causes many more problems than it solves (cheating actually solves ZERO problems).  You can reduce your risk of abuse, physical harm or death exponentially by NOT cheating and making the break clean.

I voted A on both so we disagree on that but some animals can defend themselves.  I think pitbulls can take care of thermselves.
I buy the notion that we should prioritize human lives over animal lives, or however you want to phrase that.  But that doesn't make it morally correct, and it doesn't touch on the guilt factor at all in this instance (the pet didn't do anything).

Can they?  What if I have a gun?  The pitbull, lacking necessary mental faculties, might not know what it is and charge me.  Maybe the wife can flee to safety effectively.

Sentience.  This IMO is why humans get more moral weight than dogs, which get more weight than lizards, which get more weight than bacteria.

Beat the cat.  If the pet is a dog, go seek out a neighbor's cat and beat it.  If no cats are remotely close by, beat the wife whilst imagining she is a cat.

While I'm pretty certain I know what you mean by sentience, can you explain?  Do you mean the ability to reason?  Or the ability to feel and perceive?

Can't they both be equally sadistic? Anyone willing to beat on a person or creature out of angry is on the same level to me.

It was your objection to your stated premise that I was questioning.

To me, humans are more important.
Humans gotta eat too. We're not nor are we designed to be herbivores. The point stands there is a large difference between killing for food and abuse. But we can agree to disagree.
