Buccaneers | Gruden impressed with Gradkowski

Thu, 6 Jul 2006 14:59:42 -0700

Buccaneers.com reports Tampa Bay Buccaneers head coach Jon Gruden has been impressed with how rookie QB Bruce Gradkowski has progressed during the offseason. "I really am impressed with the nature in which he's learned this offense," said Gruden. "It's a very verbal system, a lot to say and a lot to see and a lot to do. But in a short time I've seen huge leaps and gains in his performance."

This isn't a comment on Gradkowski one way or another, but has anyone else noticed that Gruden seems to over-praise everyone he's asked about, whether it's someone on his team or just about every available offseason free agent? David Boston was another recent example. Listening to Gruden, you'd think Boston was going to really be special this year when in fact he'll be lucky if his worn out knees will even allow him to play.

I've been fooled a few times in the past, picking up some guy Gruden has raved about (Earnest Graham quickly comes to mind) but who is just another body. I've learned to take it all with a grain of salt.

Has he ever said anything good about Simms?
Funny you should ask...From 6/21/06

(On what the next level is for Chris Simms)

“He put another great practice together today. He’s really been sharp. He’s made some really difficult throws. His understanding and command of the offense are much better. I think he’s more confident. He’ll be starting his first game as an opening-day starter. This will be the first time he’s been given the ball on opening day. He still isn’t the most experienced guy, but boy is he showing more poise. He’s much more confident and relaxed. He’s getting to second and third receivers. Just his overall presence is that much better.”
Ain't Simms just the greatest thing since sliced bread?!

I seem to recall him really praising Caddy last year, and he rode him like he said he was going too.
