Mort Reports that Cutler Could Play as Early as Sunday (1 Viewer)

Thought it was Tony Romo he was breaking was going to start.......oh, that was last week, or was it the week before .... ;) . Just kidding, I like Mort. I just don't listen to everything he reports anymore.

Seriously, IMO hard for me to see Shanni going to a rookie QB this early in the season. But, we'll see. Coach S has done crazier and made it work....

What Morts said was that Shanny had initially sat Cutler down when he was drafted & told him that he would ride the pine for this year & start next year.

Then with Plummer's struggles this year, Mort said that Shanny is rethinking that strategy, especially considering the showings by other rookie QB's this year.

Mort said if Plummer struggles today, he may switch in game to Cutler, but then put Plummer back in the next couple of games against Indy & Pitt. If Plummer continues struggling aginst them, the switch to Cutler could be permanent with the thinking being if Plummer struggles against Indy & Pitt now, what's to say he won't struggle come the play offs?

ESPN's Chris Mortensen reports that Jay Cutler may take over for Jake Plummer as early as Sunday if Plummer struggles.

The Broncos are 31st in the NFL in scoring, so it's not a huge surprise. Mort says that the Broncos will likely see if Plummer can help beat the Colts and Steelers in their next two games. If that doesn't happen, Cutler could get the call.

Okay, this explains why a just saw a McNair drop and Cutler add in one of my redrafts.

Shanny has made it clear all year long Cutler is not in the cards THIS YEAR unless Denver is not going to make the playoffs.

Mort has been pimping Cutler since the pre-seaon and he is wayyyy off base. Sure Denver is struggling offensively, but they are winning and that is all that counts.

The problem IMO is the play calling. They miss Kubiak and Cutler can't solve that. Every pass play is taking too long to develop and shows no timing. This team needs to go to the quick hits via slants and screens to the WRs to give Jake confidence and develop some continuity there.

Jake is not going anywhere unless he gets hurt or Denver is out of the playoff hunt plain and simple.

I wouldn't be surprised to see Jay Cutler before the season is over. It would be hard for him to play any worse than Jake Plummer has thus far.

"A wise man changes his mind, A fool never will."Pre-season, "company" line out of Denver was a QB switch will only happen if either Plummer gets hurt or the Broncos are eliminated from playoff contention and it made sense. A rookie QB would kill the Broncos chances this year since rookie QBs are rarely competent in this era of complex offenses (see Alex Smith last year and even Payton Manning his rookie year) and Plummer is more than competent to keep the Broncos competitive for the 2007 campaign.

Jump forward to week 7 and the new information we need to assimilate becuase Shannahan has, is that rookie QBs can play competently in this age (see Leinert and Gradkowski) and the ego that is Mike Shannahan thinks that Culter is the best rookie QB from last year, so he could do even better than those two. Additionally Plummer has played much worse than expected with a QB rating of 63.1 so far this year.

I'm not saying the Culter switch will happen this year, I'm just saying what's happened with rookie QBs through 7 weeks this year and Plummer poor performance thus far has moved a "non-injury/non playoff elimination QB switch" into the realm of possibility.

Any of those rookies play for a team with a winning record?

They would have if they had Denver's Defense. Denver is winning without much offense now so if you're going to make a switch, they'd better do it sooner vs. later.

Plummer will have to have a catastrophic game to make a switch. A three or four turnover game that costs Denver a victory kind of game. The last few weeks Plummer hasn't done anything awful, he's make his throws and not turning it over. What is he supposed to do with so few attempts or downfield routes? This sounds pretty ridiculous to me. Mort likes to "report" things like, "don't be surprised if blah blah blah happens" so he's covered whether it happens or doesn't. Sounds pretty unfounded to me.

Did it ever occur to you that an individual could play well while a team still loses?

The Bronco offensive problems are not because of Plummer.

The real problem is Kubiak being in Houston. Seems pretty obvious that the entire offense is out of sync this year. The QB is the person in charge of the O, so he's getting the heat, but the problem is higher than him.

Even if there is a swap at QB, it won't matter.

No.

He's now 13/25, 154 yds, 1 INT.

This is looking like Jake's best game of the year right now. Just need a TD or two.

J. Plummer 19/39 203 1 2should have been a couple more picks thrown in as well. If this story has any legitimacy at all, Cutler will be in soon.*note: I don't believe Jake will get the hook.
