I don't have a link yet, but I'm hearing that 46 year old Morten Anderson has signed with the Atlanta Falcons. He'll replace Michael Koenen who has missed 6 of 8 FGs so far this season.

I'll post a link as soon as this is widely known...

The Atlanta Falcons turned to a blast from their past to help with their field goal kicking woes.

They have agreed to terms with former kicker Morten Andersen, after Michael Koenen missed 6 of 8 field goals in the first two games, according to a person with knowledge of the situation.

Andersen, who is second on the NFL's all-time leading scorers list, kicked for the Falcons from 1995 to 2000. He is the franchise?s all-time leading scorer with 620 points. He made 139 of 203 field goals for the Falcons.

Andersen kicked for the New Orleans Saints form 1982 to 1994. He also kicked for the New York Giants (2001), Kansas City (2002-2003) and Minnesota (2004). The Falcons play the Saints on Monday night in the first game at the Superdome since Hurricane Katrina.

For his career, he?s made 520 of 658 field goal attempts.

Andersen is being brought on to kick the short field goals and Koenen will likely remain the long-distance kicker on field goals above 45 yards.

Koenen, the team?s punter and kickoff specialist last season, won the field goal kicking duty when he made 8 of 8 field goals during the exhibition season.

Tuesday evening 46 year old Morten Andersen signed an agreement by Atlanta Falcons... The kicker is back to the NFL and the Falcons who he kicked for in 1999 when they went to the Super Bowl...

The team General Manager made the call... something about mastering the technique and the GM is pleased???

Anderson will be back with the sport... Playing the New Orleans Saints on Monday who he started his career with in 1982...

 
They probably should have explored the posibility of signing Paul Edinger. Guy's been pretty damn good indoors over his career.

So that would make him the leading scorer on the two worst teams in the NFL (based on winning percentage since each joined the NFL).

If you say so. :shrug: The Saints were 108-92 in the 13 seasons he was our kicker (going 62-33 in the stretch from 1987 through 1992). All I know is he was clutch.
 
Nobody gets too excited for kickers, but do you think Mort becomes a good pick up? Does the age, the time off, and the fact that all his kicks will be under 45 yards scare you off?

I personally think that Atlanta can move the ball, and Mort could get a bunch of nice chip shots off the turf. I think you could do worse...

Im surprised - nay - shocked that they didnt. I talked to Edinger a few weeks ago (after the last week of preseason) and asked if he thought he would sign anywhere in the near future and he said "Probably week 1 or 2", but had no clue where that might be at the time. After last Sunday I figured Atlanta would be where he would end up.Guess not :shrug:
 
George Blanda, the oldest player in NFL history, was 46 when he retired. I wonder how close Andersen is or will be to breaking Blanda's age record?

 
With the # of FA kickers floating out there the Falcons must be out of their damned minds to bring back Mort. Really have got to question the front office on this one. Because guess what - he's going to miss a few just like Koenen and they'll be back to where they were yesterday, looking for a kicker. Todd France, Edinger, Grammatica, Cortez come to mind.

 
I love Morten Andersen. Used to watch him in person as a kid when he played at Michigan State. He would trot out on the field for kickoffs with no shoe on his kicking foot and proceed to kick the kickoff through the uprights as a joke . . . EVERYTIME.

The Falcons held a private workout for Morten Andersen over the summer and told him to hang tight in case something opened up. He will handle field goals and extra points in Monday night’s game at New Orleans. “We always had this as a backup plan,” Mora said. “We actually brought in a left-footed kicker into camp for a couple of weeks. One of the reasons we did that was just in case we came down this path at some point.” The Falcons haven’t given up on Koenen reclaiming the job someday, but they didn’t want to ruin his confidence after the dismal start. He will continue to handle punts, kickoffs and perhaps some long field-goal attempts that are out of Andersen’s reduced range. Also, Koenen should benefit from being around one of the greatest kickers in NFL history.

Morten Andersen hasn’t kicked in the NFL since 2004. He apparently spent the time away working on his standup routine. Andersen returned to the Atlanta Falcons on Wednesday at age 46, armed with plenty of material about becoming the second-oldest player in league history behind George Blanda.

A quick sampling:

* “I’ve got my Geritol.”

* “I was just talking to my old roommate, Y.A. Tittle, this morning. We were reminiscing about taking stagecoaches to the games. Good times.”

* “I had blood taken this morning. Dust came out.”

The Falcons didn’t waste any time ribbing their geriatric kicker, who was signed a day earlier after Michael Koenen missed six of eight field-goal attempts in Atlanta’s first two games. Patrick Kerney pulled down a photo of Andersen from the “Hall of Legends” — a row of pictures chronicling former Falcons greats just off the locker room — and put it in his new teammate’s locker. Underneath, on a strip of tape, Andersen’s playing years were listed as “1966-2000” and “2006” (c’mon, he didn’t enter the league until 1982). “He’s old enough to be my dad,” quipped 44-year-old coach Jim Mora. “He actually is old enough to be some of the players’ dad.”

As a Saints fan I remember many times he was our best (only) hope. All the pundits will say his best FG was the one against the Vikes in OT in the playoffs, but truly his best kick was a 53 yarder in San Fransisco in the rain against the wind with time expiring. Every bit as good as Vinatieri's snow kick.

He has nothing on Julio Franco.I lost last week by 5 points with Koenen as my kicker. And I used my 1 and only free agent pickup on a dlineman, so I'm stuck with Koenen this week. No one else has an extra kicker to trade me, either.

Morten was a good kicker for a lot of years, hopefully he's been practicing while he's been away from the NFL.
