Mortensen on Vince Young (1 Viewer)

OK. This is admittedly second hand info, but is legit and I thought would be of interest. Heard this from a reliable poster on the Cardinals message board. (of interest to Cards fans in the vein of "glad we got Leinart instead of young" sense.....)

ON "the Herd", Mortenson said that Young is having a very mixed camp so far. He's throwing way too many interceptions, but making just enough spectacular plays to keep you salivating. He says they thing he's 3-4 years away from being a polished NFL QB, he's so raw that things like taking the snap under center and dropping back are very difficult for him and they're spending tons of time tutoring him on that.Supposedly the plan is to teach him 8-10 plays this year that will allow him to play in SOME games in certain situations where having his running ability will be an asset. But Mort basically said if Young HAD to start this year, it was going to be ugly, or they'd have to completely revamp the offense and let him take all the snaps from the shotgun.
Anyone else hear the mort interview? Dynasty Owners: Does this temper your enthusiam for Young at all? (You were probably committed for the long haul anyways.....)

John Elway, Randall Cunningham, Steve McNair, Michael Vick. Those players are all like Young. Drafted based off tremendous potential, but at least 3-4 years off from reaching that potential.

You mean he's not ready to step under center and take the league by storm as a rookie? I thought he would post 4,000 yds passing and 2,000 yds rushing, and score 72 TDs like all the Longhorns fans have been cheering about all off season. No?

Vick still hasn't and some would say Cunningham never did. Young is a total boom or bust player in my eyes.

How many times can one person prove all of the haters wrong in his life?jesus.

Vick's only played 3 years, so there is still a lot of time for him to develop.

Cunningham won the 1990 NFL MVP, including the greatest Fantasy season ever for a QB.

Jay Cutler is going to make my Titans look silly in a couple of years for passing on him. Bud Adams had a love affair with Vince's highlight tape. Not only did we possibly make the wrong draft pick but we paid him #1 money. :wall:

8-10 plays because any more information would overload that little pea of a brain.

I can't say this information is shocking to anybody. Mike Vick would've benefited from 3 years with a clipboard, too.

There's a reason the UTexas offense was so completely simple the past 3 years. The QB couldn't handle it, but fortunately he had the athletic ability to overcome a predictable offense.

The gap between "taking the league by storm" and not being able to take a snap under center is a mile wide.Perhaps not earth shattering news as Young was drafted as a "project", but it sounds like early results are not encouraging.Over on ProFootballTalk, Young's unorthodox throwing style has earned him the moniker "Uncle Rico".

Actually, this is Vick's 6th year coming up...And I know all about Cunningham - had a poster of him on my wall growing up - his dismal playoff performances tell me he never reached his full potential.

So does this mean I should hang on to Billy Volek for a couple of years?

Can't help but think that Young is a franchise killer. A guarantee of long term Titan mediocrity.

Ok, a simplified playbook I can understand for a guy who's a raw talent, but 8-10 freaking plays?!?! I'm pretty sure Kordell knew how to run more plays than that from the QB position back during his "Slash" days. Is he going to wear floaties when he practices those plays?

I can't wait to use the search function and find the VINCE YOUNG posts and recal them all just to laugh at people in the pool :banned:

I'm in agreement with you friend. Titans should have taken Leinart...with Chow as the OC they could have sped up his learning curve. Poor Fisher...hope he gets fired so he can go coach a real team. Fisher would be unemployed as a Head Coach for all of about 15 seconds...look at all the HC hirings this off season. The league is desperate for good HC.Young's selection probably set the team back a good 3-5 years of being able to do much. Actually the Titans will be a harder team to beat thsi season as Fisher will get the defense to play harder...but they are a long way from anything.

He would wear floaties but I doubt Fisher or any of the training staff has the patience to put them on him every day before practice.

If he is, the owner has no one to blame but himself. Of course the owner is also 83 years old and probably has Dementia. :loco:

The 8-10 plays thing doesn't make sense. I'm sure he's already learned hundreds of plays (especially if you include running plays). I suspect what 8-10 plays means is that 8-10 plays will be designed specifically for Young -- e.g., options to run or throw that would not be called for Volek.

Three to four years may be about right, but at this stage I don't know how anybody could predict four years instead of two years or vice versa. It depends on how quickly he ends up progressing this year, which nobody can know at this point.

If Mortensen is saying that Vince Young doesn't look like he'll be ready to start this year effectively, I don't think any of us would be surprised by that.

The word "polished" is the key. Polished to me means ready to lead a team to the Super Bowl. It takes many QBs that long just to get "polished". Heck, David Carr has been in the league 5 years and he still isn't "polished".

This makes more sense, somehow, especially in light of the Mort comments...

Young impresses Titans, with still much to learn

By TERESA M. WALKER, AP Sports Writer

August 6, 2006

CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. (AP) -- Vince Young's early flashes of brilliance? Well, he's had plenty so far.

A 65-yard touchdown pass thrown off his back foot, the long completion after darting around inside the pocket. Sprinting past defenders and even knocking down a 312-pound defensive tackle with his shoulder.

There's also interceptions, passes batted down at the line and mishandled snaps under center -- all of Young's growing pains and the reason the Tennessee Titans are giving the former Texas quarterback, the first taken in the draft, as much work as possible to speed his development as the eventual successor to Steve McNair.

"We've seen steady improvement on a daily basis from the day he walked through the door," coach Jeff Fisher said.

"His presence, his instinctive leadership qualities, his desire, his competitiveness, those things are going to take him a long ways. He has the tools. What he now needs is the time and experience."

That is why the Titans elevated the third pick overall to backup quarterback the instant McNair was traded June 7. Young has taken at least 30 percent of the snaps through the first nine days of training camp, and he's worked occasionally with the first-team offense.

When he makes a mistake, he immediately wants to fix it. He isn't afraid to talk to a teammate or pat someone on the back and takes the blame when at fault himself. After one mishandled snap, he kicked the ball back over the Titans watching the drill.

Young also responded when encouraged by offensive coordinator Norm Chow not to hide his personality by deferring to starter Billy Volek.

"He wanted to see me out there slapping hands and being excited and being goofy like I've always been," Young said. "It's not that I'm not focused. That's just me to get everybody going and practice real hard, so we can get through the day."

His athletic ability has fans cheering and teammates talking.

"You've got to stay on your man because he can throw on the run," cornerback Adam "Pacman" Jones said. "That's what I admire about him, how he throws the ball on the run."

The first few days were rough coming out of college to a new system.

"I thought he was incredible for a rookie," defensive tackle Albert Haynesworth said. "With all the pressure and all the expectations, I think he lived up to it. He could do a little better, but he's a natural leader on the field. I think he's going to be really, really good for this franchise."

Tennessee Titans rookie quarterback and top draft pick Vince Young throws during the first day of a rookie minicamp in this May 5, 2006 photo in Nashville, Tenn. Young agreed to terms with the Tennessee Titans on Thursday, a day before the team is scheduled to open training camp.

And those mistakes?

The Titans are using a play-clock to help Young get in and out of the huddle quicker, and he had only one delay of game in such drills. The batted-down passes? Fisher said those aren't a reflection of Young's quick release but of linemen contending with the three-step drop.

With most of the offense installed, Young has been working to absorb everything.

Chow said Young has an understanding of the offense but sometimes confuses terminology with what he used at Texas, where he led the Longhorns to the national championship.

"You can't blame him. It's a lot longer, a lot more verbal telling everybody what to do. Once he gets that, I think he understands what we're trying to get done conceptually, and that's the most important thing," Chow said.

But the question of when Young will start remains.

This franchise started McNair twice in his rookie season but didn't give him the full-time job until his third season. Young joins a team that has been rebuilding the past two seasons, and Fisher isn't sure when this quarterback will realize his potential.

"He has no intention of sitting and watching very long, which is good," Fisher said.

"One of the difficult things we're going to be dealing with is the temptation to play him sooner. He's going to play soon. Billy's our starter, but Vince is going to play early. When I say that, it doesn't mean we're going to hand him the keys, but he is going to get very valuable experience."

The clock is ticking.

I've said it since day one...no way was this guy worthy of top 10 pick. Leinart will have twice the career.

I'm not sold as Young being a bust or worse than "good QB", but he WILL take 2-3 full seasons to emerge.Leinart will start late in the season and be a stud next season.

Sweet! Let me borrow that crystal ball when you are done with it.
Just a prediction/projection.
I know. Just messin' with ya. The way you worded it though doesn't sound like a projection/prediction. You make it seem like it's a given fact. I'm not saying you are wrong, but let's give both of these guys at least a few games before we start saying one is better than the other. At least young got his butt in camp on time and is making every effort so far to prove his doubters wrong.

You mean 3-4 years is no longer an acceptable period of time for a college QB to become a polished NFL QB?

Focus on the "played" part. Vick's been in the NFL. But he hardly played in the '01 or '03 seasons. Let alone the fact that his situation has hardly been stable. Marino had bad performances in the playoffs too.

I've said it since day one...no way was this guy worthy of top 10 pick. Leinart will have twice the career.
I'd be more prone to agree if Matt ever got his ase to camp. As things stand, he may hold out too long and miss out on a lot of learning. at anyone saying Cunningham never made it. The guy was a stud, and is being discussed as possible HOF. Shouldn't make it, but that the talk is there, with some backing, is enough.

The problem that guys like Cunningham and Vick have is that their talent - spontaneous and undesigned play-making - is very difficult to build a successful offense around. Offensive coordinators want consistency in addition to play-making. How do you put a successful drive together consistently when your guy may or may not complete his passes and may or may not make enough yards scrambling to convert first downs? The only guy who I can think of with those attributes who was also a good enough passer to dominate was Steve Young. Elway only became really good when he improved his passing from within the pocket later in his career and minimized his scrambling. Everyone else seemed to put up stats but die in the playoffs when the quality of the competition demanded that you complete certain plays in certain ways that exploited other teams' weaknesses they sputtered. It's no coincidence that the QB's who have won championships have done so based upon their passing and not their mobility.

i agree with maurile,if he is saying he can't be a functional QB for 3-4 i don't think we can say that & it seems kind of silly...there are differences between book smarts & football smarts, & differences in how quickly people can learn & process information... but another important part is that this could change as a function over time EVEN FOR THE SAME PERSON...naturally we would expect VY to struggle initially... almost all QBs except for marino, manning & rothliesberger do... so to say that he won't amount to much for 3-4 years would be tantamount to saying it is impossible that he could have a variable learning rate, & that could be speeded up in a year or two... once he learns fundamentals & has foundation to build on, he could explode in a year or two... certainly he seemed to evolve & progress as a more accurate passer just in his three years in texas... i wouldn't be shocked if VY makes bigger strides 1-2 years from now, which could put him well ahead of mort's time frame...disclaimer - i could have had VY but took leinart instead in a few leagues... two big keys for me was he is so pro ready & gets to throw to maybe best young WR duo in league history... but flip the teams, & i would have been sorely tempted to go with young...

If he can hit a dork on a bike in the face with a well-done Sirloin, I'm drafting him in the first round of all my leagues. Bet you could throw it over those mountains...

As a Jags fan I'm  :excited: As a Vince Young owner in a dynasty I'm :X  :wall:
:goodposting: Another Jaguars fan? :hifive:
I thought both of their fans stopped rooting for your team after they stopped going to the conference championship game.
Yep its been quite a while. Whats it been for you guys now, 15 years? ;)

You mean 3-4 years is no longer an acceptable period of time for a college QB to become a polished NFL QB?
:goodposting: I could name a few starting QBs who are about that far away from being polished NFL QBs.
The problem is that there aren't many who are drafted in the top 10 who aren't thrust into the starting lineup far more quickly than 3 or 4 years. You're talking as if Young was drafted as just another QB prospect, as opposed to the franchise cornerstone that the Titans want and expect him to become.

Holy cow some of you guys crack me up. Riiiiiiiiggghhhhttt...Vince is only going to learn 8-10 plays this year. :lmao:

Mort has been a Vince hater since Texas beat Arkansas in Vince's sophmore year. Here is how credible Mort is when it comes to Vince Young, even as recently as last year Mort maintained that Matt Jones was a better QB than Vince Young. Gimme a break! :wall:

Vince looks like a rookie in his 2nd or 3rd week of training camp, nothing more, nothing less. How about we watch him in a few pre-season games before declaring him a bust after a couple of weeks of training camp.

Mort is just reporting his insider knowlege. Its too bad that the VINCE FAN CLUB is not a very objective group when posting about "There BOY"
