Ok so i am looking into buying my very first bike ever. I am a college student and was wondering what bike i should get, how i should go about practicing, and what do you think the total price would be fore insurance and the bike. Im not a rich kid i work and i have roughly 5grand but i always wanted a bike. Any suggestions or any help would be greatly appreciated. Ive currently been looking at CBR650 but i don't know if thats a good starter or not. Thanks

By the way if there is any grammar mistakes I'm sorry i just got done reading for the past 5 hours and don't really care to proof read atm.

I would recommend a Suzuki SV650 or Triumph Bonneville

I've ridden for 25 years have had all sorts of bikes those two were my favorite. I ride the Bonneville now. Both can be had used in great shape in your price range. Both are fun and easy to ride. The CBR would not be a great first bike. I learned on dirt bikes which would be best but I understand that might not be possible.

Part of that 5k has to got to helmet, jackets, gloves and boots. Don't ever ride in shorts it looks stupid. Cause it is.

Find a bike for 3k use other 2k for gear, lessons, and insurance.

Have fun motorcycles are great if you are responsible enough to enjoy them the right way.

take one of those 3 day motorcycle safety school classes. it qualifies you for car insurance discount also. make sure bike is used in case you put it down. get a full face shield helmet. my first And current is The Kawasaki vulcan 500. dont go over 600-650cc For a first bike. progressive insurance For me is 75- For The year with a 1k deductible.

heck, if you are in The NC area i would sell you mine.

enjoy

Ditto.

I'd also add something that I'd wish I'd done when I started - don't buy a super clean, expensive bike. I'd probably advise getting the cheapest bike you can reasonably call safe and practice like mad. Like Mobbin said - You will lay it down, or ding it up while practicing tight turns, etc. Basically, get one that won't ruin your day if it gets roughed up a bit.

After 6 months or so of riding and testing yourself, then trade it in (a beater-bike can usually be sold for about what you bought it for) and upgrade to that nicer one you're looking at.

 This might be the best money I ever spent. In my state it automatically qualifies you for a license. I didn't have to take any tests at the DMV.

I have always wanted a motorcycle, but after having children, I can't see putting myself in that situation until they are older. I just don't trust anyone else on the road.

Thank you. i was planning on always wearing jeans and I'm looking at a full face helmet now. its kind of expensive at 600 for a helmet but its one of the top rated safety ones. i wasn't planning on getting a jacket or gloves are those really needed?

Again thank you to every too that put their input it is greatly appreciated.

It's more a case of "when" than "if".

Motorcycle classes and also allows you to skip the testing at at DMV for license. Class should be required for all new riders.

Honda shadow,250. Get something small and cheap because you are going to want something bigger and better once you have experience.

I took the class several years back because I've always wanted to ride but was never able to learn how. The class was a lot of fun as well as being informative. Plus, now I have my motorcycle license if I ever decide to buy one.

If I ever did though, I'd probably take the class again before riding on the streets.

Donorcycle. That's what the residents in the emergency room call them. Think about that.

I gave in and bought one. Almost killed myself a few months later. Sold it and bought a sports car. It's just a foolish risk.

I hate that word followed usually by suicycle.

Life has many risks. If it makes you happy and your not hurting anyone who cares.

And not everyone one in the medical field calls them that. It's just something people love to repeat. I know many people in that field that ride.

Life does have many risks. But unnecessary risks are silly.

You wanna go fast and have fun? Buy a sports car that won't kill you or maim you for life.

It's kinda like "man, I'm kinda bored tonight. I'm up for something fund and interesting. Maybe I'll just go strap into a human target for a knife thrower, or go wrestle some cobras."

Some things just aren't worth the risk. I enjoyed riding, it was a lot of fun. But the day I realized I could have busted my head and lost my livelihood, well, I just decided it was not fun enough to justify the risk. I can have fun doing lots of stuff.

Shadow is so small though. I understand getting something low powered but he's not 14. The sv650 I mentioned has very manageable power band and is easy to ride.

Yes get a jacket and gloves. Most accident are going to be low speed and road rash would suck. You not protecting yourself from the accident at 70mph because well there is not protection for that.

Mistake in a car (you or someone else): maybe an insurance claim

Same mistake on a bike (your or someone else): you might be :deadbanana:

You only live once mine as well enjoy it as much as i can. I am the type of likes risk. You talk about why take unnecessary risk and compared to go buy a sports car for the thrill. Ive rented a sports car and its not that fun. Fun for me is skydiving 10,000 feet in the air or cliff jumping 100 feet up and doing flips. I'm 22 and just living life right now. They all have risk say i land weird in the water i could knock my self out and drown or clip a rock and break my spine. Sky diving the parachute could not open and well thats that. But life is all about risk, it just depends on what type of person you are and how much you enjoy it. Im not here to argue I'm just trying to maybe have you see into my eyes on why i want to get one.

Don't forget the "Brain Bucket".

Read though a Motorcycle v. Car history report last weekend at work, and aside from all of the broken bones was the phrase "severe de-gloving of the foot". Paints a pretty picture, doesn't it?

in all seriousness watch all the yahoos texteing or on a phone when you are out driving around next time and think about this if someone bumps you in a car you probably go to a repair shop if someone bumps you on a bike you probably go to a hospital or a morgue people drive like crap now and you can be the best driver out there but you are not everyone else so if you have kids friends or basically anyone that matters to you think real hard about whether it is worth it bikes are everywhere here in milwaukee and too many times i have driven past a bike versus car wreck and there is a blanket covering a lump by the bike honest just think this one over real hard

oh cool, the danger-police showed up.

I never got a motorcycle because in HS my parents would have killed me, in college I didn't have the extra money to buy a decent one and then I got married to a woman who didn't want me to get one. But I don't know that it's any more dangerous than riding a bike (the kind you pedal) on the road for hours. I'm going slower but cars aren't. Life has risks, just be smart about how you mitigate the risks. As already mentioned, wear protection and take the classes.

For RR, while you're in college and single or with a partner who is cool with it, have fun. I wouldn't get your first bike when you have kids.

If you're going to do something this stupid, at least always wear a full helmet, full armored jacket, pants, boots, and armored gloves.

And have fun in August.

even Kurt Sutter had his thugs wear helmets.

armor?

I had this twenty-something doing inside sales from our Santa Monica office. Used to commute from Arcadia. Got a bike. Said he would have 5+ near misses on the 10 freeway every day. 2 months in he went down, broke his ankle. Bike destroyed. Got another bike, and as soon as his cast was off he went down again, this time breaking his arm. Bike totaled. Just not smart.

Yeah fast cars never killed anyone
You're better than this. It's all a matter of degree of risk. You're a helluva lot more likely to be maimed or killed in a wreck in a car than you are in a wreck on a motorcycle.

Is the upside of being in open air worth the downside of literally losing your head?

Nothx

I understand why you won't ride a motorcycle ever again. You had a bad experience and it affected you. That's fine.

But a motorcycle ridden properly is not nearly as dangerous as you make it out to be. Defensive riding is a big part of it, but there are basic things you can do to avoid dying on a motorcycle. A quick stat lookup shows that:

  • Over 50% of motorcycle fatalities involved the rider not wearing a helmet
  • Almost two-thirds of deaths were associated with speeding
  • Almost 60% of fatalities occur at night
  • High blood alcohol levels are a major contributor (couldn't find hard stats on this - it just said it was "prevalent" in deaths on motorcycles)
Now, to be fair, those statistics from FARS (Fatality Analysis Reporting System) also show that per mile traveled, you are 16 times more likely to die on a motorcycle than in an automobile. I think death-per-mile-traveled is a fair way to calculate.

But follow a few smart rules by a) wearing a helmet, b) don't speed, c) don't ride at night and d) don't drink and ride, and you drastically cut down your chances of being killed.

In my opinion, it brings down the chances of death enough that it's worth the enjoyment of riding (safely).

I understand those that disagree, though.
