Mount Rushmore Comedies (1 Viewer)

I had misread this post. So what are your 4 then?
Very hard question, but I was just thinking that I flame others for not providing lists and reasons, but here I am doing the same thing.

Most pre-90s comedy movies don't make me laugh that hard or consistently. The few that come to mind are Life of Brian, Spinal Tap, and a couple rare classics that do like Some Like It Hot. That's where I differ from the FFA - I don't like those late 70s/early 80s "classic" comedies at all, but to be fair I watched all for the first time as an adult. If we are talking personal favorites, the first 4 comedies I'd want in my house type of list it would be something like: The Cable Guy, There's Something About Mary, Step Brothers, and This Is Spinal Tap.

ETA: But yes, Boomerang is one of my favorite rom-coms, if that was what you were referring too. Oddly, that was one of the movies we watched the most in college, along with Cable Guy.

Having only 4 to work with truly made it painful for me to leave out some choices that have been mentioned so far, but my personal Mt. Rushmore of comedies would look like this (in no particular order):

Animal Crackers
First among several equal Marx Brothers films due to the introduction of Groucho's lifelong theme song "Hooray for Captain Spaulding". Future greats like Mel Brooks, Zucker and the Abrams Brothers and even the Coen Brothers have enjoyed working on the ground that Groucho broke for them.

Airplane!
As previously noted, this is the film that perfected and launched a new genre of spoof comedies.

The Pink Panther Strikes Again
Blake Edwards and his catalog seem to have fallen off the face of the earth, yet his ability to dole out equal parts witty and physical comedy to previously unparalleled levels earn him a perennial spot on my comedy Mt. Rushmore. This film gets its place because it contains my absolute favorite moment of any of his films.

Trading Places
Dan Aykroyd is a personal all-time favorite, and this film allowed him to showcase a full range of comedy in one character, and even with Eddie Murphy's already evident star power, their synergy elevated the movie to greater than the sum of its already stellar parts.
Duck Soup vs Animal Crackers is a battle of which Marx Brothers movie is the best where there is a different winner every day. I always seem to go to the Duck Soup side, probably because it's the one I saw first and revisit the most. I showed my oldest daughter the mirror scene and she got it. "Dad, that is just silly" "EXACTLY!"

Love them both though.

I was just coming in here to bring up Duck Soup (the ship's bedroom scene) or Animal Crackers (you canna fool me, I know there ain't no sanity clause).

I had to add 'first among equals' because picking a favorite Marx Brothers movie is like picking your favorite child in front of them. I also picked them to represent other iconic comic acts from film's early days; for example, we don't get almost a century of comedy buddy movies without Laurel and Hardy setting a high bar for everyone from Martin & Lewis to Cheech & Chong to Dumb & Dumber and more to aim for.

these are more about zeitgeist and being in the middle of it... right age, right time. agree that if someone walked into them now without ever having seen them, they'd probably be underwhelmed, even if there are some timeless lines and moments in all of them.

Where can I watch Young Frankenstein? it's not avail according to imdb.

Justwatch says its not streaming anywhere.

Weird. Maybe something with streaming rights if you cant even rent on prime
I’m not seeing streaming anywhere either. I own the DVD, which someone can probably buy on eBay for the price of a cup of coffee.
Me too. The DVD never jumps services. It's always easy to find. I don't have to toggle from service to service to find it.
