Mount Rushmore Comedies (1 Viewer)

up in smoke had me crying the first time I saw it, I still quote the **** out of it

It's mostly maui waui with a little bit of labrador

radio dispatch do you know who this is... no who is this is :lmao: kills me everytime

Animal House
Groundhog Day
Christmas Vacation
Anchorman

I considered several others that have been mentioned but I don't think Airplane and Caddyshack have aged well and while I love Monty Python and the Holy Grail, I don't find it has the rewatchability of the four above - which was one of my biggest thought processes for this.

The bold is probably the biggest factor when it comes to ranking comedies than it is for any other genre.

History of the World Part I
The lord Jehovah has given unto you these fifteen... [drops stone tablet] Oy. Ten! Ten commandments for all to obey!
Jesus...
What?

It's good to be the king.
Comicus: Have you heard of this new sect, the Christians? They are a laugh riot! First of all, they are so poor...
Swiftus: How poor are they?
Comicus: Thank you! They are so poor... that they only have *one* God!
[drumbeat, everyone laughs]
Comicus: But we Romans are rich. We've got a lot of gods. We've got a god for everything. The only thing we don't have a god for is premature ejaculation... but I hear that's coming quickly.

Borat was one of the funniest theater experience I’ve ever had. I don’t think the audience caught their breath at any point. Just nonstop roars of laughter.

While I didn't list either Ghostbusters or Ghostbusters 2 as my top comedy films. Ghostbusters 2 has one of my favorite bits.

and then they switch to the doc workers and the dock supervisor, played by Cheech Marin shrugs and says "Better late than never."

Haven't read through the thread entirely, but this would be my top 5:
  1. Office Space
  2. Airplane!
  3. The Big Lebowski
  4. Groundhog Day
  5. Tommy Boy
Different reasons. Office Space is so on point about the absurdity of corporate work. I can stop whatever I'm doing to rewatch The Big Lebowski or Groundhog Day; surely this varies by individual, I'm not arguing either is genius work, I just enjoy rewatches for those two. IDK if it holds up well but I have never laughed so hard in a theater than Tommy Boy - loved Farley, when he was having a good week SNL was on another level. I don't think I've rewatched Airplane! or Naked Gun that often, but they're ubiquitous in meme culture.

Quite a few favorites that didn't make the list; alphabetically:
  • 50 First Dates
  • Anchorman
  • Animal House
  • Annie Hall
  • Blazing Saddles
  • Blues Brothers
  • Caddyshack
  • Monty Python & the Holy Grail
  • Planes, Trains, & Automobiles
  • Raising Arizona
  • Stripes
  • The Jerk
  • The Naked Gun
  • There's Something About Mary
  • This is Spinal Tap
A lot of comedies have a dumb premise and that's fine, by definition it's middle brow - the goal is to make people laugh (or least smile.)

So many I forgot about. Guess that's why they aren't on Mt Rushmore.

Bad News Bears
Spaceballs
Ferris Bueller's Day Off
40-Year Old Virgin
Forgetting Sarah Marshall
Christmas Vacation

The list goes on and on... YOUR LIST IS TOO LONG
Dazed And Confused this is a comedy?
Happy Gilmore

Didn't quote a post but Fast Times at Ridgemont High is another one.

Surprised Ghostbusters is on here. Sure, it's comedic, but I guess I think of it as more of a blockbuster. And it came out in the most blockbustery summer of All-time, 1984.
  • Beverly Hills Cop
  • Ghostbusters
  • Indiana Jones & the Temple of Doom
  • Gremlins
  • The Karate Kid
  • Police Academy
  • Footloose
  • Purple Rain
  • The Natural
  • Revenge of the Nerds
Most of those were playing at the same time. It was an incredible summer at the box office.

Ghostbusters was awesome in the theaters when it first came out, and I still like it a lot, but when thinking about all of these other comedies I have mentioned, I just can't put it ahead of any of them. If I had to do, say, a top 50, it would likely make it, but would be somewhere in that 35-50 range.

If you did, the user name wouldn't apply.

At some point I will go through this list and tabulate the responses but I think

office space
my cousin vinny
airplane
clue

HMs:happy gilmore, Modern Times, Galaxy Quest,

I'm going to have to change Clue for like Happy Gilmore or something

I had originally put Clue since I think it's an underrated movie and I was struggling with #4 but in hindsight it's probaby not the 4th best comedy movie. I had picked Modern Times since I'm a big Chaplin and Keaton fan but I could have subbed in The Kid or The General or City Lights. Last night when I was thinking about this, a movie that maybe none of you like...Dogma. Maybe its not that great and I only think its great since I love Alan Rickman. Also supprised that no one has mentioned Robin Hood: men in tights. Might be my favorite Mel Brooks films.

I think I've seen all the films mentioned in this thread except one.

So, tonight I watched Dr. Strangelove. I understand now.

When the Dr. was fighting with his right arm near the end had me ROLLING.

One of my absolute favorite comedies is Steve Martin, Rick Moranis, and Joan Cusack in My Blue Heaven.
Interesting. I thought it was an ok movie but I would never put it high up on the list of comedies when I think of ranking them. It would be pretty far down.

So I went through and tallied up the votes. Note that I only counted those that gave an actual top 4. If you added a 5th or more, your entire list was ignored unless the top 4 were ranked somehow.

There are only 4 that cracked the double digits and nothing else got more than 7 votes, so the official FFA Mount Rushmore of comedies is:
  • Animal House
  • Airplane
  • Blazing Saddles
  • Caddyshack
The honorable mentions go to Dumb and Dumber & Monty Python and the Holy Grail.

Sweet......none of mine made the list.

I'm on board with the system you used to find these. Good work.

I'm also kind of amused/not really shocked all four of those movies all came out with a few years of one another. In 100 years of movies, the top 4 comedies all came out in 1974, one in '78, and two in '80.

The golden era?

Honestly, I think this group's prime years would be a bit behind that. If most of us are close to 50, that would make 1990-2000 our prime years. Maybe this board is older than I thought? I'm 47 and always assumed most of you cats are within about 10 years of me.

To be honest, I put 3 of those 4 on my list because I felt they were more iconic. My personal favorite top 4 were not in the top 6.

This is tough. I've always looked at Mt Rushmore's as "The one's the laid the foundation, not necessarily the best" For me the four movies that I seem to find bits of in so so many comedies I love are: Monty Python's Holy Grail (can we put a british film on Mt Rushmore? I say YES!), Duck Soup, Blazing Saddles, and Airplane.

1 out of 4 ain't bad. Though I don't think Blazzing Saddles is that good and I still think My Cousin Vinny is excellent

Going to see Monty Python and the Holy Grail in the theater tonight for its 50th anniversary release.
You should bring two hollowed out coconut halves!
On sale

Think this is the Fennis islander video with a coconut- appears it’s private now though

Having only 4 to work with truly made it painful for me to leave out some choices that have been mentioned so far, but my personal Mt. Rushmore of comedies would look like this (in no particular order):

Animal Crackers
First among several equal Marx Brothers films due to the introduction of Groucho's lifelong theme song "Hooray for Captain Spaulding". Future greats like Mel Brooks, Zucker and the Abrams Brothers and even the Coen Brothers have enjoyed working on the ground that Groucho broke for them.

Airplane!
As previously noted, this is the film that perfected and launched a new genre of spoof comedies.

The Pink Panther Strikes Again
Blake Edwards and his catalog seem to have fallen off the face of the earth, yet his ability to dole out equal parts witty and physical comedy to previously unparalleled levels earn him a perennial spot on my comedy Mt. Rushmore. This film gets its place because it contains my absolute favorite moment of any of his films.

Trading Places
Dan Aykroyd is a personal all-time favorite, and this film allowed him to showcase a full range of comedy in one character, and even with Eddie Murphy's already evident star power, their synergy elevated the movie to greater than the sum of its already stellar parts.

Proof the FFA has terrible taste in movies!!
