I considered several others that have been mentioned but I don't think Airplane and Caddyshack have aged well and while I love Monty Python and the Holy Grail, I don't find it has the rewatchability of the four above - which was one of my biggest thought processes for this.

The bold is probably the biggest factor when it comes to ranking comedies than it is for any other genre.

While I didn't list either Ghostbusters or Ghostbusters 2 as my top comedy films. Ghostbusters 2 has one of my favorite bits.

Surprised Ghostbusters is on here. Sure, it's comedic, but I guess I think of it as more of a blockbuster. And it came out in the most blockbustery summer of All-time, 1984.

Ghostbusters was awesome in the theaters when it first came out, and I still like it a lot, but when thinking about all of these other comedies I have mentioned, I just can't put it ahead of any of them. If I had to do, say, a top 50, it would likely make it, but would be somewhere in that 35-50 range.

I'm going to have to change Clue for like Happy Gilmore or something
I had originally put Clue since I think it's an underrated movie and I was struggling with #4 but in hindsight it's probaby not the 4th best comedy movie. I had picked Modern Times since I'm a big Chaplin and Keaton fan but I could have subbed in The Kid or The General or City Lights. Last night when I was thinking about this, a movie that maybe none of you like...Dogma. Maybe its not that great and I only think its great since I love Alan Rickman. Also supprised that no one has mentioned Robin Hood: men in tights. Might be my favorite Mel Brooks films.

Interesting. I thought it was an ok movie but I would never put it high up on the list of comedies when I think of ranking them. It would be pretty far down.

I'm on board with the system you used to find these. Good work.
I'm also kind of amused/not really shocked all four of those movies all came out with a few years of one another. In 100 years of movies, the top 4 comedies all came out in 1974, one in '78, and two in '80.

The golden era?
Honestly, I think this group's prime years would be a bit behind that. If most of us are close to 50, that would make 1990-2000 our prime years. Maybe this board is older than I thought? I'm 47 and always assumed most of you cats are within about 10 years of me.
To be honest, I put 3 of those 4 on my list because I felt they were more iconic. My personal favorite top 4 were not in the top 6.
This is tough. I've always looked at Mt Rushmore's as "The one's the laid the foundation, not necessarily the best" For me the four movies that I seem to find bits of in so so many comedies I love are: Monty Python's Holy Grail (can we put a british film on Mt Rushmore? I say YES!), Duck Soup, Blazing Saddles, and Airplane.

Having only 4 to work with truly made it painful for me to leave out some choices that have been mentioned so far, but my personal Mt. Rushmore of comedies would look like this (in no particular order):
Animal Crackers
First among several equal Marx Brothers films due to the introduction of Groucho's lifelong theme song "Hooray for Captain Spaulding". Future greats like Mel Brooks, Zucker and the Abrams Brothers and even the Coen Brothers have enjoyed working on the ground that Groucho broke for them.
Airplane!
As previously noted, this is the film that perfected and launched a new genre of spoof comedies.
The Pink Panther Strikes Again
Blake Edwards and his catalog seem to have fallen off the face of the earth, yet his ability to dole out equal parts witty and physical comedy to previously unparalleled levels earn him a perennial spot on my comedy Mt. Rushmore. This film gets its place because it contains my absolute favorite moment of any of his films.
Trading Places
Dan Aykroyd is a personal all-time favorite, and this film allowed him to showcase a full range of comedy in one character, and even with Eddie Murphy's already evident star power, their synergy elevated the movie to greater than the sum of its already stellar parts.
