First round of the tourney is over.  There quite a few upsets (except for in the NE Region).  Three of the 13 seeds went on to win, and a total of 8 double digits seeds pulled off the "upset".

Let's revisit what my intent with this tournament was:

We are voting on which one of the these director's movie you would want to see TODAY.  Of course past performance is part of the equation, but we should also be factoring in recent performance and what you think they will be doing in the future.  For the sake of the tournament, the ONLY information you have to decide between the two directors is something that reads "New Movie by _______".  There are no trailers, synopsis, or imdb page to look at.  I don't want it to be about theater experience either - what type of movies you usually pay for in the theater, etc..  I posted in one of the other threads this scenario: we all have the same home set up, so for the match pretend you get 2 blurays shipped to you in a blank case that reads "New movie by ______".  You have to pick one, and the other is destroyed MI style.

Couple close ones here.  Would love to see it get to 50-60 votes like the other rounds have gotten.

I would honestly like a reason that FFC is getting the votes.  Is it a hatred for PTA, or have you guys liked movies that Coppola has done recently?

Folks probably didn't read the OP like me and voted on body of work

In my case it's both. Coppola with the good track record and PTA's "I just want to make you as depressed as possible for 2.5 or more hours stick".

Kind of like the hatred for Woody Allen around here, just not as extreme.

The fact that Ben Affleck is slaughtering the 21 Jump Street/Lego guys, who defeated Allen, is illuminating.

Fair enough.  I have a couple follow up questions:

1.  Have you seen any FFC movies in the last 20 years?

2.  How many PTA movies have you seen?

I was just curious.  That is an interesting way to describe PTA and his movies.

I guess as I am looking at the voting, what is the line that some of these guys seem to cross and go into that territory where they start drawing that hatred?

Aronofsky makes just as dark of movies as PTA and he is at least in a battle here while the other is losing to someone not relevant for 30 years.  The Coen Brothers' comedies (to me at least) are every bit the quirky messes that Wes Andersons are, and their dramas are just as dark as others directors',  but they seem to be a lot more popular.  Fincher's movies are also pretty dark in tone and theme as well.  Why do people gravitate more to those than the other critically acclaimed directors?  I am just wondering what some of these directors do that causes the mass rejection of their stuff.

Agreed.

But after all the hatred expressed toward Woody Allen in these threads, I went back to IMDB to look at his output---I was not aware of how many mediocre to poor movies he has released in the past 20 years (based upon both critic and fan ratings). I had no idea that he has directed and released a film every year since 1982!  Many of them I had never seen or even heard of---I doubt many of the haters in these threads had either.

That being said, his great films over the past 30 years (IMO) still far outweigh the work of the Jump Street/Lego guys and thus I'd still rather take a chance on a future film from Allen waiting for that next diamond in the rough.

1. I looked it up and The Rainmaker is the only one I've seen of the few that he's directed in the past 20 years. Actually I'm surprised you included him in the pool since he hasn't directed many recent films. But his overall record is very good.

2. Boogie Nights (liked it), Magnolia (possibly the film I disliked the most in 5 decades), Hard Eight (meh), There Will Be Blood (hated the second half) and The Master (awful).  Calling them all depressing is obviously an exaggeration, but they seem to wallow in unlikable characters with meandering plots and bad soundtracks.

If I am going like a film with primarily unlikable characters, it had better have an interesting plot. This is where PTA falls well short in my book. Scorcese is an example of a director who is able to achieve this.

Come on Favreau you can do it!

Anyone who hasn't seen Chef - it's pretty formulaic, but an entertaining movie with great music, great casting, and overall very enjoyable.  Favreau seems to be hitting his stride in my estimation - and Elf is a ####### masterpiece.

Tied up on one of them here.  I will bump this, give it until I get done with work at 11pm central and call it.

I voted FFC but missed the today party.,

PTA easily for me

Yeah, I wonder how much of this is PTA hate and how much is not reading the OP.  Just like others crabby about Woody getting taken down.  PTA had no business losing to a guy that hasn't really done anything for 20 years.  So be it.
