I haven't been to the movie theater since before the Pandemic, when is the last time you went? (2 Viewers)

The last time I was in a movie theater was to watch The Natural. Whatever year that was. I always preferred drive-ins..... Yeah, I'm getting old.

Went a little crazy this week. Was on vacation and saw Sound of Freedom (solid), Oppenheimer (good but not great in my book), Dead Reckoning (I love the MI series, so would say really good action movie), and a showing of A.I. Artificial Intelligence (the Spielberg flick from 20 years ago . . . didn’t love it then or now). I’d go to more movies if there were some I wanted to watch.

Just got back from Barbie. Thought it was fantastic. Really great movie.

That's three movies I've seen at the theater in the last month and they were all terrific movies and terrific experiences. Highly recommend all three.

Hmm, I thought it was a sold meh. A few chuckles, but not all that funny.

I'm not in the camp that it was some sort of man-hating feminist manifesto, although the movie was clearly leaning hard into it. I just didn't find it all that entertaining.

The music was hit or miss. I think they nailed the bro songs (particularly when they were all paired off on the beach around little "campfires"). But some of the other musical selections were pretty terrible. Unfortunately for Mark Ronson, I saw that he was responsible, and this bit of business has almost retroactively soured me on things I like of his that he's done in the past.

I'm also a Helen Mirren fan, but the use of narration throughout a movie just smacks of laziness. Was this supposed to be a fairy tale? I don't think so. And I think I'm over Will Ferrell.

I know I'm not alone in this, but Ryan Gosling as Ken was a revelation. Dude's got some serious comedic chops. Margo Robbie was also very good in her role. But if there's a Barbie sequel (and given the massive amounts of cash they've generated), it sure as hell better be Ken-centric, or Kentric if you will.

Matthew Vaughn’s ‘Argylle’ looks good.

The first trailer for Matthew Vaughn‘s spy drama Argylle dropped Thursday morning, and in the clip, we see more of the director’s trademark slick action and more of Henry Cavill‘s disconcerting haircut.

The trailer offers more clues as to the plot of Argylle. We learn that Argylle (Cavill) is a fictional super spy dreamed up by introverted writer Elly Conway (Bryce Dallas Howard), whose life is turned upside down when her new book is a little too close to the truth for some real-life spies who begin to hunt her down. Oh, and her cat is along for the ride.

Argylle‘s all-star cast includes Cavill, Howard, Sam Rockwell, Bryan Cranston, Catherine O’Hara, John Cena, Dua Lipa, Ariana DeBose, Samuel L. Jackson and Dua Lipa.
(We see Henry dance in the trailer, but will Sam? If not, it sort of bucks the trend.)

I will be in the theater for this one come February '24

Flowers of the Killer Moon

-Open this Friday nationwide

Scorcese was the last director I saw in a movie theater before the pandemic and that's the director that will lead me back into them this Friday
I know a little about the back story for the film but I try not to watch the previews much, I trust Martin and I'm sure I will be highly entertained and talking about it after

It's been almost 4 years since I've walked into a movie theater.
I miss the early 2000s walking around SoCal, used to go once/twice a week, saw everything on big screens

Not exactly sure which theater around here in Florida I'm attending but I have a couple I'm considering.
There is a place called the Movies at Delray and the Movies at Lake Worth, Mom n Pop which is where I saw the Irishman, they make the best popcorn and sell Nerd Ropes

Looking forward to this.

Just saw it's 3.5 hours running time, holy ****!

Apple TV
-I couldn't watch 5 minutes of it, Mrs MoP fell asleep and hasn't finished it
Highly doubt we are the target audience

That's a movie and we like "Films"

No Country For Old Men is a film
Let's start there

And It's film season the rest of the year

It's for sure awards movie season. I won't argue about your film vs movie thing though, I'll just let that be.

Michael Bay makes movies
Martin Scorcese makes films
Is that a little better?

Off topic

We have a ton of movie threads. For instance, we have a movie thread - rental edition. Do we have a thread dedicated to in-theater movies?

TIA

Very rare that I go to the cinema these days. Every other thing is a rehash or sequel. Prior to Cocaine Bear, I'm not sure what the last film I went to see even was

Last film I've seen in the cinema is still Cocaine Bear. Probably will not go again until the Running Man remake is out

Gladiator II and Dune 2 and Oppenheimer were the last three on the big screen for me

Each were good decisions IMHO. My wife is trying to drag me for Wicked but that's one I'm just fine renting at home.

Sci-Fi, Fantasy and Action are really the only genre of movies I want to see on the big screen any more.

We saw daredevil and wolverine because a Dallasites Date Night Passport had a free large popcorns and drunk or candy with a ticket for each up to two tickets deal. That was feasible money wise and fun.

We saw Gladiator II and Wicked over the holidays. Strongly considering catching a matinee of The Brutalist this week because I think a 3+ hour movie works better in a theater than at home.

Talkin’ John Birch Paranoid Blues - Live at Philharmonic, NY NY 1964

would have been funny to include that one, eh

A Complete Unknown review

Well, that was thoroughly enjoyable. I thought Ed Norton’s cadence & phrasing absolutely nailed Pete Seeger. Because he’s such a ubiquitous figure I thought it would be impossible to depict the multitude of layers of b.s. & genius of Mr Zimmerman but doggone they did him justice. I understand Bob approved of the movie.

As with any historical biopic, a few minor facts, shortcuts & compressed timelines were sacrificed. Which I’m grateful for, having seen my fair share of faithful-in-every-aspect films that were turgid & boring. This one was interesting throughout.

I could listen to Dylan everyday and never be bored, in fact I once went several (6?) months where I only listened to his catalog. More telling than my feelings is my wifey, who barely knows Dylan except for a few docs we watched together, said “wow that was a really good movie!”

Boyd Holbrook killed it as Cash. Loved how they dropped in cameos from him with some of the best lines. “Go drag mud on someone’s carpet”

Ed Norton deserves an Oscar for his performance as Seger. He was outstanding.

Saw a comment on reddit "He was a more convincing Seeger than Pere was." I've seen a few of his PBS films, one on stuff he was doing to clean up the Hudson and another that was more retrospective about his career. Pretty awesome life. Was married to Toshi for 70 years, and when she passed at 91, he followed her six months later.

1. Den of Thieves 2
-I've never heard of the original let alone the sequel

2. Lion King Part 3
-heard it didn't do very well vs other Lion King movies, never a huge fan of the original

3. Sonic 3
-Seriously? I would never pay to see this at a theater, sorry. Did hear it was worth watching, maybe when I'm toking at home I'd pop this in, never saw 1 or 2

There aren't many movies that get released where I feel like I need to run to the theater any more

$15M seems like a low #1 box office movie, even the holiday hits have fizzled out quickly, the box office is pretty weak IMHO

Ok FWIW Den of Thieves was a great heist movie. Idk how they decided to do a sequel but I look forward to it being on Netflix or Amazon or whatever eventually

Wait. A Hollywood studio thought audiences would pay money to see a biopic of marginally famous Robbie Williams portrayed by a CGI monkey? :lmao:

Yeah, that was one of the previews that ran before the Dylan movie....my dad and I just kind of looked at each other in bewilderment. Still didn't look as stupid as whatever movie Jackie Chan is going to be in next.

So crazy. The previews ran in front of Sonic 3 and my kids (and wife) were like, nope. Same reaction from my parents before the Dylan biopic. Who greenlit that and what audience were they hoping to appeal to? So bad.

Going to see A Complete Unknown today

Took my dad to see it on Tues. Hope you enjoy it as much as we did. I'm actually considering going again because I liked it that much. I don't think I've seen a movie in a theater twice since Return of the Jedi.

Yeah, ‘twas amazing. Would recommend.
Wish I liked A Complete Unknown as much as others seemd to have. I like Dylan a lot, especially his 60s run. I got pretty deep into him in college and Forever Young was my wedding mother-son dance song. But this just seemed to have nothing to say. It's fun and pleasant but felt to me like, "Hey remember Bob Dylan? He was pretty good huh?"

He's really NOT a very likeable guy. He was a pretty awful friend and treated girls like disposable jungle vines. I quit reading a bio on him because I just didn't want to read any more about him the human. And I think one point of the movie is that he refused to let people in. He created a fictional past, he didn't reciprocate feelings, he stole (records, girls, songs) and he refused to bend at the knee for anybody.

Which is why I think the movie incorporated other artists like Seeger and Baez to contrast their personas against his. Artists who felt like they had a duty or calling to use their music and fame to do what people needed or wanted vs a brilliant artist who just wanted to do whatever he f'n wanted and f everybody who doesn't like that.

I loved the movie and love Dylan's music. I have an autograph copy of Rolling Stone with him on the cover. But he's not anybody I'd ever want to emulate.

Sure but to me "Bob Dylan was a selfish jerk" just wasn't enough for a movie to me. I liked it, it's very well made. But it felt very empty.

Hadn’t been to a movie theater in perhaps a decade.

2 months ago we went to go see a sold-out showing of Interstellar on IMAX here in Chattanooga.

Jammed into seats. Ridiculously priced food & drink. MAJOR hassle to yourself and others to get up during the film.

At home we’ve got a 100” QLED display with a Dolby Atmos 5.1.4 surround system with UHD BluRay, 9 speakers totaling 25 drivers aimed at our main listening position. 12” 1500 watt subwoofer provides theater caliber rumble. All room corrected with Dirac Live.

30 cent bag of microwave popcorn, 90 cent can of miller lite, Italian leather sofa with 10 feet of leg room, and a pause button.

**** movie theaters 😂

I wasn't attempting to say that was what the movie was about, I was attempting to add some insight to the man the movie was about that might not be obvious to others. I don't think the movie made him out to be a selfish jerk; if anything, I think it left out a lot of his negative characteristics - which, I think makes for a better movie overall.

Oh well, I liked the movie a lot more than you. Would gladly watch it again today if I got the invite to go. Hope it wins an Oscar or four.
