Moving from Florida to Boston/New Hampshire (1 Viewer)

I have the opportunity to take a job halfway between Boston and Nashua, NH. It would be about a 35% increase in salary. Is that enough to make the move financially worth it? Just curious if anyone else has done this and was happy or regretted it.

I don't believe 35% is anywhere near enough.

Money wouldn't get me to move anywhere cold but 35% is nothing if you're happy where you're at. .

Yup, cold as ef up there and the cost of living is quite a bit more. It won't be much of a pay raise, if any.

Moneywise it may not seem worth it but can help your career or might be worth it for the experience.

You married?

Kids?

Interested in a change?

This seem like it could be temporary or more a permanent thing?

How old are You?

Married, kids are grown, not really interested in the change, Don't know. 49 yrs old.

The wife is from Jersey and misses it up there. This would be a work transfer and a promotion for me but I would only do it if it meant a decent pay raise. 35% just doesn't seem like it's going to be a raise between the state taxes and higher real estate. (Florida pays no state taxes)

There is your answer.

If your job is inside the I-495, you'll either spend waaaay too much for a house or half your time in your car. Outside the 495, you can value shop a nice life for yourself & NH has no state tax either. GL

If you lived in N.H. yes, Mass, no. That's if you don't mind the commute.

That link says Tampa cost of living is 20% less then Nashua and housing cost is 33% less.
That 35% pay increase sounds right.

It seems I would break even so not really a raise for the increased responsibility and aggravation of dealing with living in the arctic.

What are we talking here? Burlington?

my buddy lives in Nashua and works in Burlington. Commute is a cinch, his house (nice house) cost $250 or so.

It doesn’t need to be expensive. Paying stage income taxes somewhat offset with no sales tax. While real estate taxes high percentage wise in NH, low assessment (250k) makes them fine.

I would definitely consider it

I live here NH and love this place.  But if I were you I'd stay put.  Your wife isn't any closer to "home" than where you are, and you'll be dealing with the cold and Nashua (grew up there) is an armpit IMO.

Have you always lived in warmer climates? if so, then this decision is easier. I spent 10 days in Tampa when i was 18
and thought the trade off of good weather vs the amount of D-bags that were there wasn't worth it.

Isn't there an entire thread on the douchebagginess of Boston?

What's the NJ factor?

You guys would be closer and would visit people in NJ or just that she would be happy to be back in a climate changing state?

A little of both. He Mom and sister still live in Jersey but I think she misses the changing of the seasons more. I like Fall too but winter is blah.

Are you high?  New Hampshire is the worst state in the us

Where do you live in Florida?

Cold. Rednecks.  Racists. Cold. No culture.  Terrible infrastructure. Jobs leaving. I could go on.  I did a 6 month gig in Manchester and was amazed how much i hated it

Is college football what you meant by culture?
No just something other then pale beer bellied foul mouth rednecks that have never been out of the state.  People are leaving that state in droves and coming south. As are businesses.  No way I would move there. Eff that and the horse it rode in on.   Think south Boston but poorer.

Awesome area. I got married on Cocoa Beach.

One major downside, imo, are the many sharks in the water over there.  :shark:
The wimmens there are trophy level. If you have a good stable job there no way i could move.  We are talking about snowfall in march/april
