Mrs. O is a Monkees fan so I know them plus Spanky and the Gang were the 2 bands approached for Daydream Believer.Nice guess
That was '80s, no? And besides there was another strong song they had on the charts.Osaurus said:Could get crowded in here
Yeah. TrueThat was '80s, no? And besides there was another strong song they had on the charts.
Has that mattered yet? That was '80s, no? And besides there was another strong song they had on the charts.
Not really, but if it's the band we are alluding to, it would be the worst countdown violator of them all.Has that mattered yet?
As the numbers get smaller, the violations get bigger. Not really, but if it's the band we are alluding to, it would be the worst countdown violator of them all.
A very weird song?timschochet said:Up next: a 90s tune by a New Zealand band has extraordinary success over a 3 year period.
Arbitrary and final.timschochet said:" Radar Love" Golden Earring will not be on the list. Earlier I described the difference in my thinking between The Grateful Dead and Free. Golden Earring is in the Grateful Dead category: too long a career.
I also considered "Love Hurts" by Nazareth, which is on a lot of OHW lists, and ruled it out as well. In their case, even though it was their only hit, the song "Hair of the Dog" from the same album got a ton of play on AOR stations.
Finally I had to rule out "Na Na Hey Hey Kiss Him Goodbye" by Steam. Steam was not a real band; it was basically Paul Leka, and as a solo artist Paul Leka already had a hit with "Green Tambourine." So I felt that wasn't fair.
Otherwise all 3 of these songs would have been taken, and ranked fairly high as well.
There are no violations. As the numbers get smaller, the violations get bigger.
Every time I looked around in1996, this song was being trumpeted.A very weird song?
The bass on this one is coolUp next: Pete Townshend’s chauffeur wrote and sang this song for a band that Pete formed and produced.
Plus they had another really big song in the 80s.timschochet said:" Radar Love" Golden Earring will not be on the list. Earlier I described the difference in my thinking between The Grateful Dead and Free. Golden Earring is in the Grateful Dead category: too long a career.
This song would work better as an instrumental - or just use the parts with the female backup singers. The guy's faux rap is terrible.37. “How Bizarre”-OMC (1995)

Ooh Baby (ooh baby) Its making me crazy
Kind of a novelty song, but the chorus stays with you and makes the whole thing worthwhile. Maybe the best song from New Zealand outside of the Split Enz/Crowded House brothers.
Only 4 left from the 90s. 8 from the 60s.Man, do I ever have a great one-hit wonder from the nineties. Holy moly, I hope it gets used.
Yeah, I figured. This one's a beaut, though.Only 4 left from the 90s. 8 from the 60s.
As we get close to the top, 70s and 80s will dominate.
So I had my SXM tuned to the '90s station on the drive into work today. This song came on and I thought, "Heh. I wonder if this is gonna make Tim's list at some point."37. “How Bizarre”-OMC (1995)

Actually I missed one- there are 5 songs from the 90s; one in the top 5.Yeah, I figured. This one's a beaut, though.
Seconded. The musicianship is fine, but this song is annoying as krapfe. This song would work better as an instrumental - or just use the parts with the female backup singers. The guy's faux rap is terrible.

Yeah, this is a terrible selection. Take On Me is not even on the list and this is #37.Just like herpes.
This song is awful.
The guitarist Jimmy McCulloch later went on to join Paul McCartney & Co. in Wings. Died very young (age 26) of a drug overdose.36. “Something in the Air”- Thunderclap Newman (1969)

A late 60s rock classic. As noted, the bass is awesome, as are the acoustic guitars.
This is one of about 4 late 60s protest anthem type songs that are all ranked pretty high on this list- not because of their subject matter, but because they’re all great songs.
Probably will win the ugliest artist competition in this countdown.Up next: a song about marijuana featuring Jerry Garcia on steel guitar.
Has this ship sailed or are we going out for beers?Up next: a song about marijuana featuring Jerry Garcia on steel guitar.
Way to redeem #37
So this century is represented by Bad Day and Stacy's Mom. Oof.Only 4 left from the 90s. 8 from the 60s.

I only knew this song as the Tom Pretty version, which sounds much superior.36. “Something in the Air”- Thunderclap Newman (1969)

Love Petty but no.I only knew this song as the Tom Pretty version, which sounds much superior.

I like Tom Petty's version of this. Patti Labelle also did a pretty cool funked up version in the 'early '70s.36. “Something in the Air”- Thunderclap Newman (1969)

Nothing more from the 21st century? SAY IT AIN'T SO. TIM.So this century is represented by Bad Day and Stacy's Mom. Oof.
Blame the boy band era for that, I guess.Nothing more from the 21st century? SAY IT AIN'T SO. TIM.
I hadn’t really thought about it much, but I guess so. Obviously part of it is my age. But another part is that, with newer artists you don’t know who is going to only have one hit.Nothing more from the 21st century? SAY IT AIN'T SO. TIM.
In that case, I hereby petition on behalf of all readers of this thread to retroactively replace OMC with Jimmy Eat World.I hadn’t really thought about it much, but I guess so.
Very representative of its' era.35. “One Toke Over the Line” Brewer and Shipley (1970)

This song started off as a joke they wrote one night while on tour, and it became their biggest (and only) hit. Spiro Agnew chose to publicly attack the song in Trumpian fashion, which only served to heighten its popularity. The song actually appeared on the Lawrence Welk show, performed abysmally by a couple of his regulars; Welk introduced it as a “modern spiritual number.”
