My countdown list of one hit wonders- 1. Play That Funky Music (Wild Cherry) (1 Viewer)

I know a lot of guys who love Aimee Mann. I think I listened to Mental Illness for 2 months straight when it came out. Listening to my favorite song off that album right now.
So beautiful.  Speaking of beautiful stuff, I've been obsessed with her collaboration with Ted Leo as The Both for five years, and think Hummingbird is endlessly gorgeous.  From that same album, Milwaukee was my declared 2014 Song of the Summer and is still on my list of immediate uppers.  Ted Leo has a charmingly not-great singing voice, but his guitar playing is killer.

I was scouring my brain to come up with any female friends I had who loved Aimee Mann, and all I could come up with were several dozen guy friends who do.  I only made the statement as a gentle(?) poke at rockaction's equating love of Aimee Mann with feminism.

I’ve become a Ted Leo fan from his work with AM

Hey now! You're really underselling the great Michael des Barres! First off, he's arguably best known for being the husband (and namesake) of the most famous rock groupie in the history of the genre.

Secondly, he fronted the underrated group Detective in the '70s. Their first album is really good.

Third, he's done hundreds of guest spots on TV shows. So if you don't recognize the name, you almost certainly recognize the face.....from something.
I’m constantly amazed how, on an ostensible fantasy football message board, I’ve yet to discover the person or topic too obscure for at least one member to have an encyclopedic knowledge thereof. 😃

   I first knew of him through Ted Leo and the Pharmacists, who seemed ubiquitous in Chicago in the mid-00s.  Then I scoured back over his earlier, more hardcore works, and the breadth of his music is amazing.  I wouldn't have thought him a natural fit to collaborate with Aimee Mann, but it really works for me.

Agreed.  But I love Aimee Mann.  Apparently that's because I'm female, which was news to me.  (Not the being female part, which I've known for some time, but the fact that all women are required to love Aimee Mann.)
Groans. Sufficient, not necessary.

Men can like her, women can dislike her, but I bet the majority of her superfans are women.

Maybe not. PTA loved her enough to basically give her the pop part of the soundtrack to Magnolia, so...

Whatever. I guess everybody loves Aimee.

Eta* my bad, btw. I hope that comes through.

It’s all good, friend.  Like I said, my needling was intended to be gentle.

I’ve never seen her perform solo (note:  what the hell is the matter with me?) so have only my friend base for my assumptions.  Was surprised to see your experience has been the opposite of mine.

Thanks, bud. I should be more careful with bad generalizations. Enough people just wrote and I like her, too, so that was probably not a wise thing to say. Mea culpa.

43. “Under the Milky Way”- The Church (1988)

Several of you have written that this song should be top of the list. I get it. It’s an awesome song from start to finish. Let’s see what you think of my other picks before making that judgment. But I’m not going to argue with anyone who thinks this is as good as it gets.

Gonna see them here in a few weeks (Starfish tour).  I would say this is not their best song nor is it off their best album, but it’s a hit nonetheless

My ex opened for Marty Willson Piper at a concert in Chicago, and somehow I got roped into selling MWP's merch at the show.  MWP was a condescending ##### who thought he was a much bigger deal than he ever was.

Love this song, but I'm fine with it not being higher.  What a jerk.

Agreed. The Church is awesome and they do have even better material. I was saying that this OHW is a very high bar for any other artist’s OHW.

Well, now you've gone and ruined it for me. Thanks!

Hypothetical:  Could one guy make this list twice?  Say he fronted a band well-known as a one -hit wonder, and then outdid himself as a solo one-hit wonder artist?
Singer Tony Burrows has been a one-hit wonder in multiple groups:

He was also one of the vocalists of the The Flowerpot Men, who had a massive worldwide hit in 1967 with "Let's Go To San Francisco", but I don't think it was a hit in the U.S.

  Totally agree on this one, one of my favorite 80s songs. I just listened to it yesterday.

By the way, apropos of my earlier comment about 120 Minutes ... if you are a new wave / '90s alternative music fan, and you don't have this link bookmarked, you're not really a new wave / '90s alt music fan:

The best part: https://www.billboard.com/charts/hot-100/1970-05-02

Love Grows at #7
United We Stand at #60
My Baby Loves Lovin at #62

All 3 stayed in the Top 100 until 5/16/70. On 5/23/70, Rosemary dropped out, but https://www.billboard.com/charts/hot-100/1970-05-23 :

United We Stand at #30
My Baby Loves Lovin at #26
Gimme Dat Ding at #65

He barely missed having 4 songs with 4 different bands all in the Top 100 at the same time

42. “Rock the Boat”- Hues Corporation (1973)

https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=FfBwsG8ubFw

Another awesome 70s video.

In case anyone hasn’t figured it out yet, I have a deep love in my heart for classic soul/r&b tracks, and some disco as well, and my rankings on this  list will definitely be biased heavily in that direction. This is a superb song, considered one of the first disco hits (though that seems to me a pretty broad definition.) However you categorize it, it’s a smooth professional masterpiece of an effort.

cool story bra.  :)

ETA:  love the song, too bad he's such a suckupus.

Up next: I think somebody mentioned a Dutch band earlier...
I mentioned one earlier and was (not really)  shocked to find i had messed up their country origin...there is actually another Dutch band that I am hoping will be in the countdown, but i don't think this countdown focuses on their genre (but if I could say the magic words)

All I know is, if Are You Ready For The Sex Girls by Gleaming Spires doesn't make this list, I will post the full text of Mr. Ishida's Bookstore, with full attribution to @timschochet, on Kindle Direct.

Not serious about this - song just came up in my rotation and it sorta fits the thread.

If The Brian Jonestown Massacre had ever had one hit, I could tell the story of how Anton Newcombe dropped to his knees and asked me to marry him in 2005.  Alas, such songs as "Bring Me the Head of Paul McCartney on Heather Mill's Wooden Peg (Dropping Bombs on the White House)" never really took off as much as you might expect.

Sorry for my stories; I'm sick today and unable to concentrate well enough to work, so this board is what I have for the day.

I really have to listen to more of their stuff. I have Their Satanic Majesties’ Second Request and really like it, but haven’t delved deeper.

" Radar Love" Golden Earring will not be on the list. Earlier I described the difference in my thinking between The Grateful Dead and Free. Golden Earring is in the Grateful Dead category: too long a career.

I also considered "Love Hurts" by Nazareth, which is on a lot of OHW lists, and ruled it out as well. In their case, even though it was their only hit, the song "Hair of the Dog" from the same album got a ton of play on AOR stations.

Finally I had to rule out "Na Na Hey Hey Kiss Him Goodbye" by Steam. Steam was not a real band; it was basically Paul Leka, and as a solo artist Paul Leka already had a hit with "Green Tambourine." So I felt that wasn't fair.

Otherwise all 3 of these songs would have been taken, and ranked fairly high as well.

Plus “Twilight Zone” is just as memorable and, I believe, charted higher than Radar.

Interesting. I'd consider "Radar Love" (#13 Hot 100, 1973) to be Golden Earring's second-most well-known song in the U.S. behind "Twilight Zone" (#10 Hot 100, 1982). Around here, both get played on various stations, but "Twilight Zone" gets spun a lot more often.

Definitely check some more out.  It's really hard to recommend an album or two, because their sound changed fairly dramatically from record to record.  Also, I'd expect you might have seen it already, but I highly recommend the documentary Dig!, about them and The Dandy Warhols.  One of my favorite docs.
