Well maybe you guys are right about No Myth. If I had included it I would have ranked it somewhere in the 60s- I really do like that song.
The synth on that song sounds broken and the dude is annoying.I hate that song with a passion. With an OBSESSION! Not making my list in a billion years.
Love 'Til Tuesday. Being from Boston, you tend to get attached to bands from your hometown.47. “Voices Carry”- Til Tuesday (1985)

Always loved Aimee Mann. As I wrote, she would not be eligible for this list as a solo artist. But her old band only had this one hit so it’s worthy. And this remains a powerful song, obviously still relevant today. I was surprised, reading the Wiki article, to learn that it was originally meant to be sung to a woman.
Wasn’t even their top “hit” on the US rock charts47. “Voices Carry”- Til Tuesday (1985)

Good to hear. I wanted to keep my opinions to myself until I was sure I wasn't spotlighting you.I hate that song with a passion. With an OBSESSION! Not making my list in a billion years.
OK we need to go back to the OP. I am not following, repeat, not following the rule of only one hit in the top 40. That can be one of the criteria. But other criteria are: is this the only song you can think of when it comes to this artist? Is the song as well known as the artist? Etc.Unfortunately, I think they technically don't qualify. What About Love hit #26 in 1986. Not as good as a top-ten with "Voices Carry," but I bet a lot of folks would take it!
I loved her work in Magnolia. But her most vocal fans are female and there's definitely a fem-centric nature to her work. See my edit, regardless.Hey I’m a big fan
Did you yell a lot?#FUNFACT: A young HellToupee sat next to Aimee Mann during game 6 of the ALCS in Fenway.
I've seen her live at least once. I guess you're right but, compared to an Ani DiFranco or Dar Williams crowd, it's practically middle America.I loved her work in Magnolia. But her most vocal fans are female and there's definitely a fem-centric nature to her work. See my edit, regardless.
So that’s where she got the lyrics from.#FUNFACT: A young HellToupee sat next to Aimee Mann during game 6 of the ALCS in Fenway.
In a thread chock full of music nerds, we can't resist.OK we need to go back to the OP. I am not following, repeat, not following the rule of only one hit in the top 40. Oh God, you're likely very correct. Ani's crowd was mad about Dilate because it was about a man. Anyway, I don't want to hijack the thread with femcentric musings.I've seen her live at least once. I guess you're right but, compared to an Ani DiFranco or Dar Williams crowd, it's practically middle America.
Misread your OP, I was reading the line about the general rule, not your specific rule. I suppose when you are a fan of the artist, you can immediately identify more songs that are 'hits' to you.OK we need to go back to the OP. I suppose I could have put the Indigo Girls on this list for “Closer to Fine” but they don’t really fit.Oh God, you're likely very correct. Ani's crowd was mad about Dilate because it was about a man. Anyway, I don't want to hijack the thread with femcentric musings.
Unsurprisingly, Tegan and Sara also have a crowd like Ani's.
I think you're right. And didn't we just hear about Closer To Fine in your album thread? That would have been redundant, anyway. Good call, IMHO.I suppose I could have put the Indigo Girls on this list for “Closer to Fine” but they don’t really fit.
There's another similarly-titled song that qualifies as a OHW - not sure it would be in the countdown at this point.I suppose I could have put the Indigo Girls on this list for “Closer to Fine” but they don’t really fit.
Wasn't Galileo a hit, too?I suppose I could have put the Indigo Girls on this list for “Closer to Fine” but they don’t really fit.
Coming Up Close is such a great song...Wasn’t even their top “hit” on the US rock charts47. “Voices Carry”- Til Tuesday (1985)

Brilliant song. Love that "chuck-chuck-chuck" driving riff.47. “Voices Carry”- Til Tuesday (1985)
Guy paid a big time price for that - died of AIDS in 1991.Always wanted to throat-punch that doosh in the video giving Ms. Mann so much schmidt. Shoulda dated Muffy from the yacht club instead, Chaz.
Wow...that's...very unfortunate. RIP, Cully.
Not those over 60Pretty sure most Americans over the age of 35 will remember No Myth.
Not only had a I never seen that, that's probably the first time I ever sat and watched the entire original video.
There's a whole series of literal videos. I think the first one was for "Total Eclipse of the Heart".Not only had a I never seen that, that's probably the first time I ever sat and watched the entire original video.
Wham’s Last Christmas is pretty funny, but Pat Nebatar’s (what I always call her) Love is a Battlefield is hilarious: https://youtu.be/9suakIdYgPYThere's a whole series of literal videos. I think the first one was for "Total Eclipse of the Heart".
Most of them are pretty funny if you watched the original videos a lot back in the day.
That one is my favorite.Love is a Battlefield is hilarious: https://youtu.be/9suakIdYgPY

yeah, i wasnt involved w that end of it. i was in Santa Fe, my old company, BSharp Mgmt, back east was scrambling to beat half of Boston to sign 'til Tuesday after a showcase. they had Sire Records sold on the idea & were trying to convince the band. they told Aimee that one of the 'heads' of the company had worked with several top female artists, so she wanted to talk to 'him'. we talked like 45 minutes & she was impressed enough that they flew me back east to meet with her. BSharp rented a fancy suite, 'tT never showed, except i think a keyboard player or somebody, who got room service & split
“Voices Carry”, as well? Your musical wheelhouse years, I assume, trend more recent?Back to another streak of songs I've never heard before, 4 straight.
Yep, some nobody decides he'll write a sequel to a Bowie classic (not to mention Bowie had already recorded Ashes to Ashes). How about I subjectively punch it in the face?
Gah. Talk about ruining a classic.
I'm 45. But yeah I guess. Wasn't much into music growing up until my later teens and on into college.“Voices Carry”, as well? Your musical wheelhouse years, I assume, trend more recent?
Sorry no.Will there be a place for Ride Captain Ride? We shall see.
Sounds worse than me seeing the Ronettes at a Philly mall when I was a kid. Maybe it was Martha and the Vandellas.Sorry no.
Though I did see the lead singer perform this once at the Orange County Fair.
That actually sounds awesome, if a little sad.Sounds worse than me seeing the Ronettes at a Philly mall when I was a kid. Maybe it was Martha and the Vandellas.
It was both. He was there along with one of the guys from Three Dog Night, and a dude from Beatlemania. Oldies show. That actually sounds awesome, if a little sad.
He is saving that spot for an artist 5 top ten hits...Will there be a place for Ride Captain Ride? We shall see.
Those oldies shows are always a little weird, especially when they're using contemporary equipment and dressing contemporary. I saw a bunch in the nineties in Boston and all the guys and women performing were stuck in the eighties, as was the equipment and production. It was both. He was there along with one of the guys from Three Dog Night, and a dude from Beatlemania. Oldies show.
That's too bad. "Ride Captain Ride" IMO is a better tune than about 90% of songs listed so far, but to each his own.Sorry no.
Though I did see the lead singer perform this once at the Orange County Fair.
My dad kept saying how sad it was that they were doing a mall gig. That actually sounds awesome, if a little sad.
