My Den RB thoughts (1 Viewer)

While threre are already tons of threads on this topic, I wanted to spin it a bit into my opionion. Also, I would like to take a couple assumptions to try and guess what will happen in the Den RB situation. This thread should be useful for those in dynasty leagues who are trying to target a value player who could end up in Denver.

D Nash ... horrific outcome. But his death occured prior to the Bell trade. Meaning, Denver traded the starter (at the begining of the season) after losing another of its RBs. I dont believe Den thinks Mike Bell is a full time starter. This is due to his play late in the season where they employed a RBBC with him and TBell. Meaning, the situation was one where Denver looked to be grooming their future full time starter. I dont believe Denver is going to look to the NFL draft for a RB. I say this simply because Denver is not a team that has huge success building through the draft. Yes, they have had some good players, but for the most part, they build through trade and FA.

Given this information, I find it most likely that Denver will be trading for a RB this offseason. Who will that RB be? Denver is a team that employes speed rather than brusing force. For that reason I would rule out Jamal Lewis and Willis McGahee. Willis may not be a true bruiser, but I dont think he fits the speed mold that Denver is looking for. Who else is there? Chris Brown, Travis Henry, Dom Rhodes and Michael Turner. Of these players, I think Turner would be the best fit for the system.

Look, Im not telling anyone something they dont already suspect. However, I think these couple paragraphs have put some logic to Denver trading for Turner come draft day. Somewhat like what they did with last years draft.

Ahman Green would be cheaper and just as fast. They could then pick a developmental rookie in the draft, and have both at a fraction of the cost. Turner would be a great fit, but I don't see Denver trading draft picks away and signing him to a long term deal for a lot of coin.

You are also forgetting about Thomas Jones. The Broncos have been interested in him for a while, and rumors have been spnning about a possible trade that would send Jones to the Broncos in exchange for a few draft picks. IMO, Jones would be the best possible fit for the Broncos system.

My thoughts are the quite the opposite. I don’t think Denver wants to give up draft picks and invest a large amount of money at the RB position. That is not their MO.

They traded Porits and Bell prior to contract years. Every year they bring a dozen or so RBs that other teams have cut given up on ie. Damien Nash, Cedric Cobb, Ron Dayne etc. Ahman Green and Chris Brown are definite possibilities because they won’t break the bank. They know that RBs have a short learning curve compared to other positions so they can bring in a rookie and start him by mid-season.

I think Travis Henry would make a decent fit. he has some speed but he also moves the pile. Behind a very average OL in TN and Buffalo as well I might add, he showed he could play the position at an NFL level. He got in a situation in Buffalo where they bought the hype on McGahee and brought him in...they couldn't keep paying those 2 top dollars. Tennessee made a marginal commitment to LenDale White in the 2nd round last season.

Henry could be a centerpiece for the running game this season, and Denver will then draft a burner like a Henry from Zona in the draft.

you are trying to justify the Broncos trading FOR a rb based on past history? The facts are as follows:T. Davis: drafted in 6th round

O. Gary: Drafted in 4th round

M. Anderson: Drated in 6th round

C. Portis: drafted in 2nd round

T. Bell: drafted in 2nd round

R. Dayne: FA

G. Hearst: FA

M. Bell: FA

etc...

Denver has never traded FOR a rb in the Shanahan era, and Denver has never acquired a top name FA. The RB position has been built through the draft, almost exclusively. Given that, it becomes exceedingly difficult to justify that they would spend a 1st and a 3rd (with those picks going to the Broncos toughest division rival), that they would use a first in this years draft, or that they would make a play for any RB's anyone has mentioned. It could happen, but the fact remains that you cannot come to that conclusion by looking at what has happened before.

Past history suggests that the Broncos will find an adequate RB in the 2nd round or lower (and it won't be whom anyone suspects), they will acquire a cast off RB via FA (but it won't be anyone who started anywhere last season), and/or they will sign some undrafted rookie FA. There will be an open competition at training camp, and we will continue to see "who will be the starting Bronco RB" threads well into next season.

Interestingly, Denver DOES have a tradition of having RB's with the same last name...

NFL.com says he's visiting Denver tonight.

i would be willing to bet whatever you want that McGahee is faster than Chris Brown and Dom Rhodes!

Henry owner in dynasty league keeps his fingers crossed...

Anyone recall whether DEN was interested in Henry when BUF was trying to move him a couple years ago, or did DEN still have Portis then? Can't remember exactly when Henry was on the block.
