My Fantasy League (the site) (1 Viewer)

Polish Hammer

made of glass
My league just moved from CBS after 11 years or so. What are the tips/tricks I need to know to make sure this is set up in a way that is convenient and accessible for the league members? What are the best mobile options? Anything to make this look better than the default setup?

Last year we paid $80 with the early bird discount (up from $70 the year before).

This year (also with a new processing fee added) it's $93 including the early bird discount.

Try getting the application for cell phones. That is the way to go. It’s not great but is better than trying to use the website on your phone.

I think you’re stuck with the layout and look, which has long been a complaint about MFL.

There are others that know more than I; but try the app for cell phones.

MFL design has been stagnant for at least a decade. The dropdown menus are nearly unusable. Navigation on the site is almost impossible. There isn't a native mobile app (there are a few 3rd party apps, though). All that said, the site allows dang near unlimited customizability for your league. If you have a league like ours, which really values team DEF stats in certain ways, it's the only game in town.

Wait. I'm pretty sure I have a native application. It's on my phone.

Have used them forever and wish they would update their layout. I love the customization so much that I probably won't change, especially since there aren't really any 'perfect' platforms out there (I feel I'm one of the few who hate Sleeper). Seems like they keep jumping up their price without major changes as they know new leagues probably won't use them, but that those who have for years/decades are loyal to them and will pay whatever they charge (within reason).

There are two apps that have been around for a good while, MFL Platinum and MFL Mobile. Neither are native. I messed around with Platinum a few years back and it was garbage. Maybe it's gotten better? Sounds like you're using the MFL Mobile app. How do you like it?

The 2 dynasty leagues that I commished used to use MFL. We have pretty standard lineup and scoring rules so, when those 2 leagues merged a few years back, we moved over to Sleeper since it’s free. None of us loved MFL’s site anyway, and my co-commish and I hated MFL since it took 2 or 3 tries to get our (basic) waiver/free agent settings right each year. Frustrating.
Add on top of that the fact that the site looks like it’s from the 90s era, we switched. I will say that Sleepers chat-forward design helps keep the trash talk annd fun banter active during the season.

Nope. Using MFL Platinum. Works okay. It's not great but I do most of my stuff from my desktop. If it was purely phone-based I'd be a bit lost. But I'm like that with all fantasy apps. I don't feel like I'm making the best decisions when I'm deciding on my phone. Don't know why but just feel like I'm more control of all my faculties when I'm sitting at a desktop.

Just dowloaded MFL Mobile and can't get to my auctions. Can't figure it out. Not really intuitive.

Same for our league in switching to Sleeper from MFL due mainly to the much better interface with Sleeper.

There are a few threads going on comparing Sleeper/MFL. I believe MFL was planning on rolling out their own app this offseason, but not sure where they stand on it.

I tried a couple MFL apps years ago and they weren't any good. One guy in my league still uses one and complains that nothing works.

I use the website on my phone's browser and it's easy and works fine.
this. The Apps sucked, the website on your phone... while slightly archaic... works great.
I almost always just use the website on my phone. Not great, but it works okay. Tough in commissioner mode though.

To be critical of Sleeper for a moment, while they have a nice looking phone app that works great, there are a few instances where I can’t find something I’m looking for (mostly preferences or commish tools) and that’s because these things are NOT always consistent between their phone app and there desktop browser interface.

I forget the exact example, but every year I know I stumble on one particular thing that I’m looking for, can’t find it, think I’m going crazy, and then go to my other device and easily find the setting there (and I make a mental note that it is indeed missing in the other interface…and then forget about it by the next season ;) ).

That’s frustrating and wanted to point out its not all rainbows and unicorns over on Sleeper.

I hear Sleeper isn’t DEVY friendly. Can’t create custom players.

I use MFL Mobile for submitting lineups, checking live scoring and reading player news. Everything else, including commish functions, the app sucks for and I do on the desktop.

I don’t do Devy so can’t say for sure. But I wouldn’t be surprised. Like I said, “straight forward” scoring and line ups :)

Hey Deamon, this post pretty much sums up my feelings about MFL. As commissioner, I convinced my league to switch from CBS in '09 which allowed me to correctly set up our crazy scoring oddities. Thus far I have thwarted host-site change proposals for a number of years based on the non-customizabilities of alternative sites. In addition, the small increments of of yearly price hikes have been palatable, so far, to my league mates.

Yes, redraft leagues with basic/vanilla rules should look elsewhere and just avoid MFL altogether.

I have only used Sleeper as a host-site for the first time last year. Not as commissioner, just a league member. I can't say that I hate it as I was just starting to get a more comfortable feel for the app as the fantasy season ended. I was not thrilled nor was I disappointed with their live-draft capabilities as it worked fine enough that I never timed-out. I need more time using the site/app to make a more informed decision on Sleeper.

I'm still surprised with as much as MFL can charge without making improvements year on year that competitors haven't started showing up into their monopoly on complicated leagues. It's been years and no competition to drive prices down.

The reason my main league started and remains on MFL after 4-5 years is that no other sites can handle our setup. We have a dual copy league with devy (custom) players and some other wrinkles. We paid a guy to help with the setup and art to make it look better though:

It has not gotten better.

It’s fine, so long as you manually force synch every now and then.

And @rockaction is correct that it’s way better than trying to use the website on your prone.

But web on a PC / laptop is the best way to use MFL.

I use the app and frequently have issues with it. (NFL Platinum, btw)

Put me in with you. I am not a fan
Same here. Not alone.
For those (including me) who don't use the Sleeper hosting site, explain what you don't like about it. I would like anyone that uses it and doesn't like it to post why. It's especially helpful for those of us that don't use it, whether or not to use it in the future.

I've only used the phone app for the FBG league this past year and I thought it looked horrible. No one likes how MFL looks, and I think it looks way better than the Sleeper app.

Last year FBG league was the first time I used Sleeper. I found it to be difficult to navigate. By that I mean it wasn't intuitive. It was just trial and error each week to figure out where I went last time to find something. Whether it was standings or free agents or who won the bid it didn't seem straightforward to get around.

I'd be interested in hearing from commissioners of sleeper and how they feel about the platform. Being a league memeber of a platform can be vastly different than having to commish on said platform.

@JohnnyU my post from above as a commish of one league.

I will say though, like any new user interface, it just takes some getting used to as a player. Sleeper does everything you need. The buttons are just in a different place.

To me though, the most intuitive fantasy football interface ever is plain old Yahoo. Still do 2 redraft leagues on yahoo and it’s like a comfy chair.

I know this is stupid but I can't stand how Yahoo puts WRs ahead of RBs in the lineup order.

As a MFL commissioner for years I love their interface. It's very customizable and easy to navigate in the commissioner setups. That is why if I'm going to remain the commissioner of a league I want to stay with that platform. If one of my leagues wants to go to something else, then someone else can take over as commish. At least that is the way I feel today and probably tomorrow. If you're playing for $$$ and in a 12 team league paying $6.90 to $7.76 per team, depending on discounts, for hosting site fees and that makes or breaks you, then you probably shouldn't be playing for money.

I think MFL is atrocious. I don't really understand why anybody is on it tbh.

We use it for all of our leagues because it actually supports a lot of the stuff that other leagues don't. Example Taxi Squad, Contract Leagues and Salary Cap. Sleeper does not support contract or salary cap so not even an option. Plus I have been able to code several custom reports that are valuable additions to our league. Example Offer Sheet Auction for RFAs, Detailed contract report that shows salary cap up to 5 years out including "what if" scenarios for effects on salary for cuts and/or trades and countless others.

Exactly. Why can't mfl just update their interface and dominate the world?

Have used them forever and wish they would update their layout. I love the customization so much that I probably won't change, especially since there aren't really any 'perfect' platforms out there (I feel I'm one of the few who hate Sleeper). Seems like they keep jumping up their price without major changes as they know new leagues probably won't use them, but that those who have for years/decades are loyal to them and will pay whatever they charge (within reason).
I just sent an email asking what improvements or additions over last year I will see to account for the $20 or almost 25% increase....also asked if it was just something they thought us old timers would just accept for convenience .....should be an interesting response

eta....we have used MFL since 2002

Thanks for poking the bear.
I need to do the same with FFPC since they still have the same bugs and oddities that I’ve experienced since I’ve used them for the past 7-8 years (e.g. 50% of the time, if you click the Stats tab it’ll error out in a non-descriptive way, but you just learn that it means you need to log out and back in again to wake it up or something)

I did this a couple weeks ago (shortly after posting in here complaining about the price) and they ended up giving me a one-time $10 discount.

so still basically a $10 increase....to me I almost feel at some point you should be grandfathered into a price....better yet have your price reduced each year you stay with them....I'm no business man, but really what "additional costs" is MFL having to cover if they aren't offering some pretty serious upgrades.....they literally push a button and everything carries over....rinse and repeat.....and I bet they don't publicize your $10 discount for "complaining"...

Not that I want to defend MFL since I no longer use the site specifically because I thought the fee was ridiculous for what I needed for my leagues....but I imagine their costs of hosting the site in the cloud or whatever web site/services/cloud/security tool kit they use have gone up over time just like everything else in the world, so they're passing those increased costs to their users as companies do. Guessing...

Been using MFL since 2009. It was $50 a year for a long time (using the $10 discount for FBG and $10 multi league discount, early bid all that)

I think it was 2023 when it finally went up then in 2024 went up again then this year went up again.

$82 this year with all the discounts for me for my 9 leagues.

I like being able to go back and look at trades and trade offers from years past though it is now harder to get to like 2009-2018 years and only shows like 5-6 years back.

Live scoring page not great much prefer RTS live scoring page.

can you share who/how you did this....I submitted a ticket and emailed Mike Hall at sales@mfl or whatever and haven't heard back....and its go time tomorrow.....Mike was the one who I always communicated with but I am wondering if things changed in the new ownership or whatever...? tia

I’m in four leagues on MFL and I’m totally fine with it. I use MFL Platinum and think it works great.
I don’t commish any leagues, just a user, but I don’t get the hate

some extra clicks. click on the oldest year that is in the menu list, and then there will be at least one older year available and keep going back like that. they made that change several years ago. a bit annoying but from a database management pov I think I understand it.
though it is now harder to get to like 2009-2018 years and only shows like 5-6 years back.

I went to the help center and then to the Sales/Ordering category, and then I think to the bottom to Submit a Support Ticket.
