My Interview with Pat Summerall (1 Viewer)

Chris Yandek

Footballguy
Hey guys. I had the opportunity to interview sports broadcasting legend Pat Summerall to discuss his new book Summerall: On And Off The Air, his NFL career in the 1950s and 1960s, his close friendship with Mickey Mantle, his battle with alcohol, how close he was to death, and so much more.

You can read and listen to the interview at the link below

All feedback is appreciated.

What are your memories of the time you spent with Howard Cosell besides his ability to drink more than most of the country under the table?
 You do realize Pat struggled with alcohol throught his life. In retrospect, with this as the context of everything he's had to fight with, don't you think this approach was a bit tacky?

Being an alcoholic is a disease. I dont mean to be a wuss or one of those oversensitive political dudes but that really was not a cool question(in my opinion). Overall though a really interesting interview and if thats the only fault, I say thats a heck of a job.

THank you for posting the interview. Chris has posted his independent work for some time here and, whether you like his style or not, we always appreciate constructive football content here.

Or asking him how close to death he was. Might as well say "man, you were almost a goner".

No mention of the 1958 Championship game vs The Colts which put the NFL on the TV map.(and a broadcasting job) Some say it was the greatest game ever played.

I tried to use the alcohol question as a public service announcement. Maybe it would help someone. That is why I worded the question the following.

What would you say to anyone who is listening or reading this interview that might have a problem with alcohol?

Pat mentioned a whole story in his book about Howard drinking people under the table. That is why I asked that question.

I know all too well about this, but I try to bring out the subjects that hit home. Pat talked about alcohol through his entire book. I felt it stood out and you couldn't ignore asking something about it.

The death question maybe was a little too much, but again I wanted to inform the public of what he went through.

The alcohol situation is a personal thing for my family as it ruined my father and my relationship with him for many years. I won't get into the rest, but I didn't have the easiest childhood. My Mom and older sister and Grandparents have always been great though.

I try to be different, original, and touch issues most wouldn't. But I try to do it in a professional manner.

No problem Colin. Work ethic is everything. I just knew I could make my dreams come true.

Then, my .02 would be to frame the question around his quote so that it becomes obvious to him and the reader that you're using his own words. Something like "What are your memories of the time you spent with Howard Cosell besides, as you write in your book, his ability to drink more than most of the country under the table?" You help yourself by (a) demonstrating your research and taking note of his own work, and (b) you don't come off sounding campy like two guys just shooting the #### about drinking stories. This is, imho, important both for the interviewee and the readers to understand the full context. I, for instance, didn't know that's what he wrote--I just thought it was your own thought, which I felt was inappropriate. Now that I know the context, I can see where you were going. But, the attribution of the quote should've been made clear.

I like your interviews and you've done an excellent job of getting high profile athletes. I have a question for you though.

A large portion of your questions begin "What do you remember about . . ." or "What are your memories of . . ." which is about as broad as you could possibly ask a question. This means that the interviewee either selects what portion of that broad subject matter to address with their answer or gives you a superficial response meant to cover all of the potential subject matter. In other words, you're completely deferring to the person you're interviewing as to what kind of answer to give when you ask such a question.

Is that approach of yours intentional, and if so why?

If I am trying to concentrate on one subject than yes, but it's not intentional.

Don't forget that I am now working in movies and music and hopefully will be doing some more TV stuff as well and have a working relationship with EA Sports.

Hope to be doing some more movie work as well in the future, but it's all cross promotion with sports. If it's sports related in any aspect of entertainment, rest assured I will try to be involved.

Lawrence? Larry?

Why waste your time asking him stuff that everyone else asks him? This was a chance to ask him things that everyone wants to know like if he craps his pants or wears depends.

I have never met Tara Lipinski. It was a phone interview I did about 3.5 years ago.

I surely have played phone tag over the years to get certian interviews.

When are you going to start doing audio files in mp3 or wmv? Real Media still stinks since your Moss interview. :)

But good job regardless.

My interview with music artist Robert Randolph is in MP3. Pat was the last one. I recorded that weeks ago before I got the request to change my format.

I will see if I can convert some of many better interviews from RM to be MP3 that would take some time.

Everything is MP3 from now on.

Good job. I like hearing about people being near death and having abusive problems. Sure is more interesting than football.

First off how are you?
Is this your catch phrase or something. Every interview starts this way. First off??Not sure why your Mickey Mantle questions arent one after the other.

I always ask the guest how they are just to know I care and value their time.

I wrote the questions down in the order they came from the book, but should have re ordered that. I agree. I don't think it made that big of a difference though.
