My list of good MR turned closer in 2008 (1 Viewer)

Footballguy
1) Carlos Marmol - Dumpster is gone in 2008 and Marmol looks like the real deal

2) Rafael Soriano - Stud closer in the making. He has electric stuff and Wickman sucks. Cox has been loyal to his closers in the past, but I don't see how he can ignore that 4.80 era and 1.63 whip. I don't care how many saves he has converted. Plus his back could go out at any moment.

3) Joel Zumaya - Todd Jones is gone after this year IMO. The only thing standing in the way of Zamaya is if Gagne is traded to Detroit. I have no worries about any lingering effects of his finger injury.

4) Akinori Otsuka - Both he and Gagne are on the trading block. My guess is that it's Gagne that finds a new home. That makes Otsuka a very good option in 2008.

5) Scott Linebrink - He's a FA in 2008, so I expect him to be pitching somewhere besides SD next season. The big question is what kind of situation will he land in. There's a chance he could end up playing the same role for another team. He's been a very good MR for several years, but he has slipped a little the last couple seasons.

Honorable Mention - Rafeal Betancourt

I know there are others, but most are scabs, or not in a good situation to close for 2008. Others I like a lot if they got their chance to close would be Broxton (Saito is too good right now), and Neshek (Nathan isn't going anywhere soon).

Sleeper - Santiago Casilla - Very good stuff, and if Street doesn't make it all the way back, Casilla could be the one to have in 2008.

:goodposting: Anytime Wickman came into the game was a ####### nightmare, especially recently. Everyone talks about his arm being overworked but he's doing it to himself. 14 hits, 7 ER in the last 8.1 IP? Or how about the games he lost in the 9th/blown saves to the tune of 4 total loses due directly to him in the last 10 games. Enough is enough. Soriano has great stuff and they haven't been shy about getting him into games. He's shaky at times, But when he's on, he's in cruise control. Its a move that needs to be made sooner than later simply for damage control. Soriano is a bit more methodical than Wickman but wont give up the big innings late in the game.

I like this list a lot. There should be some pretty solid closer values in Draft 08.
I would love to see Greinke get some garbage saves this yr. and Dotel become the setup guy. If Dotel keeps getting injured, they may have to take him out of the role eventually.

I think Soria is behind Dotel for saves, and there's a pretty good chance that Dotel will get moved before the deadline.

That has changed in the last month.

Hmmm, Greinke came into the game in the 6th tonight followed by Gobble, then Soria for the last out of the 7th and what I assume will be the 8th.

And if it was anyone else I would have just let it go but here is the rub: you are taking information that is pretty much a given and stuff that has been talked about at length everywhere as your own opinion. You could have just provided some links or removed the "my":preseason

Very recent

One guy you didn't mention which is a great fantasy option right now is Manny Corpas. He is the current closer in Colorado and probably will be the guy next year. Cla Meredith is in a good spot in SD also because of Hoffman's age and Linebrink's probable departure . Also Zumaya, Soriano, and Otsuka are hardly guesses because their closer now won't like be around in 2008.

Here is a list of the closers that will be Free agents after the season:

Mariano Rivera

Todd Jones

Jason Isringhausen (club option)

Francisco Cordero

Bob Wickman

Eric Gagne

Wickman is done and Atlanta has two great options. Jones will probably not be a closer after this year but he may get a shot somewhere but this doesn't mean Zumaya will close in the Larussa mold. Cordero is going to command a nice contract after his nice season and may move on.

Thanks for your input, good stuff. By the way, it wasn't my intention to shed any earth shattering news about these middle relievers, only to remind folks that 2008 is just around the corner and not to forget about them, especially in keeper leagues. I know these guys have been talked about at length all over the Internet, maybe with the exception of Casilla, but that doesn't mean it can't also be my opinion if I happen to believe some of the stuff I read. It's not like I quoted someone as my own. Hell, most of the stuff posted about players is information we've read somewhere on the Internet. It's not my intention to get into a pissing contest about something as trivial as this. Again, thanks for what you did contribute, as I'm sure it is helpful to many.

any chance Izzy goes somewhere else and Cards move Wainwright to the closer again? He hasnt exactly prospered as a starter.

Good question. I believe the Cards still want Wainwright as a starter long term. He's young and has time to work out the kinks. I guess anything could happen, but Wainwright has enough quality pitches to be a starter. He just needs to mature as a pitcher.I can't believe I'm about to type this, but ...., any chance Percival is the closer if Izzy is traded? TheInsidePitch.com lists him as 1st in line. I thought Percival was done after the 2005 season.

Don't forget about Jonathon Broxton - there's no guarantee that Saito decides to return next season since his family still lives in Japan.

Edit: :goodposting:

But there is a story in today's LA Times that illustrates how isolated he is from his family and friends.

Yes, Broxton is a good one to have. Did you hear any rumors about Saito playing in Japan next season?
No rumors, but today's Times had this story Saito which makes a few important points - 1. He almost never sees his family or friends during the season 2. He gets along with his teammates, but doesn't seem to have developed a number of friends here in the U.S., making his time here even more isolated 3. He is undecided about returning in 2008As a Dodger fan, I hope he comes back. However, it wouldn't surprise me in the least to see him retire.

Don't forget about Jonathon Broxton - there's no guarantee that Saito decides to return next season since his family still lives in Japan.
Yes, Broxton is a good one to have. Did you hear any rumors about Saito playing in Japan next season?

Thanks for the info on Saito, because I didn't know that. Always good to get the perspective from someone who's a fan for team of the player in question.

any chance Izzy goes somewhere else and Cards move Wainwright to the closer again? He hasnt exactly prospered as a starter.
Good question. I believe the Cards still want Wainwright as a starter long term. He's young and has time to work out the kinks. I guess anything could happen, but Wainwright has enough quality pitches to be a starter. He just needs to mature as a pitcher.I can't believe I'm about to type this, but ...., any chance Percival is the closer if Izzy is traded? TheInsidePitch.com lists him as 1st in line. I thought Percival was done after the 2005 season.
I can see Percival getting a chance to close if Izzy goes down. Really, he's probably the best alternative since Braden Looper is still demented enough to think he's still a starter.

Sadly, though, I'm in negotiations with RotoDugout for Exclusive Posting Rights Pertaining To Baseball-Related Issues.

I am the Mighty Ducks of Fantasy Baseball.

Someone mentioned Cordero as a FA at the end of the year and everything I've read is that the Brewers don't think they can afford him. They were using this year to get Turnbow back to where he could handle closing next year and that looks like it is going well.

The Saito article was interesting. I think everyone who owns Broxton in a keeper league is banking on him having that job next year.

Chad Cordero will probably be traded in the next two weeks.

All of this is stuff that has been elsewhere of course.

And, of course, from April 1-June 30 next year, you'll probably see 5-6 more changes at closer, since that seems to be about the norm.

1) Carlos Marmol - Dumpster is gone in 2008 and Marmol looks like the real deal2) Rafael Soriano - Stud closer in the making. He has electric stuff and Wickman sucks. Cox has been loyal to his closers in the past, but I don't see how he can ignore that 4.80 era and 1.63 whip. I don't care how many saves he has converted. Plus his back could go out at any moment.3) Joel Zumaya - Todd Jones is gone after this year IMO. The only thing standing in the way of Zamaya is if Gagne is traded to Detroit. I have no worries about any lingering effects of his finger injury.4) Akinori Otsuka - Both he and Gagne are on the trading block. My guess is that it's Gagne that finds a new home. That makes Otsuka a very good option in 2008.5) Scott Linebrink - He's a FA in 2008, so I expect him to be pitching somewhere besides SD next season. The big question is what kind of situation will he land in. There's a chance he could end up playing the same role for another team. He's been a very good MR for several years, but he has slipped a little the last couple seasons.Honorable Mention - Rafeal BetancourtI know there are others, but most are scabs, or not in a good situation to close for 2008. Others I like a lot if they got their chance to close would be Broxton (Saito is too good right now), and Neshek (Nathan isn't going anywhere soon).Sleeper - Santiago Casilla - Very good stuff, and if Street doesn't make it all the way back, Casilla could be the one to have in 2008.
1) Marmol might be enough to persuade Chicago to try Dempster in the rotation again, such a move would make a lot more sense over the off-season than mid-season, as was discussed. Chances that Marmol gets the job next year, due to a switch or ineffectiveness: 60%2) Wickman is a FA, and, I would imagine headed elsewhere. Chances that Soriano is closing next year: 90%3) Todd Jones is also a FA. Pretty much the same situation. Chances that Zumaya is closing next year: 90%4) My guess is that they hang on to Otsuka and deal Gagne this month. Chances that Otsuka is closing next year: 70%5) Linebrink is going to command a lot of money for a reliever, and as such he'll probably be closing somewhere. Chances that Linebrink is closing next year: 90%Betancourt: I think JoBo will get bought out, but Clevo could bring in someone else this year or sign somebody in FA. Chances that Betancourt closes next year: 45%Casilla: Duch and Street would have to die, again. 10%
