Mysterious Yellow Fruit - Houston area (1 Viewer)

Golden Melon?

It is the size of a lemon, and i think it was from a vine growing up the side of a tree. I definently picked the fruit 5-6 feet off the ground, and they were growing up to 15' off the ground.

I think the vine had already died and only the fruit were left This is why I do not have any pictures of the leaves.

On the outside it looks like a passionfruit, however the inside looks nothing like a passion fruit.

Another google search turned up the yellow muskmelon, the inside looks very similar to the korean melon, however the outside was smoother.  Something similar to this would make sense since it smelled like a cantaloupe.

Looks like a loquat.  It's become naturalized to this area.  (Houston)  The neighbor behind us had one of these trees.  We wondered if it was a food until we saw the hispanic lawn guys picking and eating them.  They taste pretty good.

Someone planted those mysterious packets of seeds that were being sent through the mail.

Have someone get a flamethrower or that whole area is done....

Loquats (aka Japanese plums) have a few large brown seeds in their center. MT’s fruit doesn’t look like that - it has more of a ‘melon’ pattern of small seeds.

MTskibum - are those seeds firm like lemon seeds? Or soft and edible like cucumber seeds?

My usual go-to on the local flora and fauna is Texas A&M.  I can't see anything on the fruit list that seems to fit.

Maybe take some fruit and leaves to the garden center?

Golden Langkawi Melon? They like to grow hanging down. Did Houston have a cold snap a few days before your discovery? Maybe the leaves died early. I'm several hours Northwest of you and we had ice on the leaves of our deciduous trees on Tuesday.  It was the weirdest thing ever, lots of broken limbs in the area.

Soft and edible.

Covid-19 fruit. Have you seen the TV show The Last Ship? First the plague infected humans then it evolved and attacked the crops.
