Nate Washington - Record Reception? (1 Viewer)

Collins was running for his life on a 4th down and flipped the ball to the receiver as he was being hit. Washington was tackled immediately. Something like that. There may have been a fumble involved.

Collins threw a short pass to Washington (I believe it was a screen, but not sure), and he caught it then fumbled the ball. The ball was recovered 22 yards back, counting as a -22 yard reception.

That contributed to the Titans unbelievable passing numbers for the game - 2/14 for NEGATIVE SEVEN YARDS - for the whole game!

Vince Young came in as the leading passer at 0-for-2 for 0 yards.

Ed: I'm not sure how the stats work. It's possible that the only reason it counted as a -22 yard reception is because Washington recovered it. I know that if the opposing team recovered the ball, it would count as a runback rather than a negative reception. I also wouldn't be surprised if the NFL updates the stats later this week to make it a -10 yard reception and a fumble for -12 yards recovered by Washington, or something like that.

It was a bizarre play. Collins stumbled as he was running backwards, and he flipped the ball up to Washington just before he hit the ground. Seems like the original play was going to be an end-around or something. Washington ran backwards for about 5 yards and then fumbled it for another 5 yard loss.

Either way, at least 15 of those 22 yards will be counted as a negative reception.

You can see the video of the play here

In their defense the weather was real bad. It's nearly impossible to pass with any level of success in those conditions.

It turns out the Titans didn't get the record for fewest yards passing in a game - they're not even in the top three. The all time fewest yards passing in a game is held by the DENVER BRONCOS with -53 yards passing against the Oakland Raiders on 9/10/1967.

Ed: It seems that this might be a preseason game in 1967. The next fewest passing yards was -52 by the Bengals v. the Oilers on 10/31/71. However, they got 16 passing yards and were sacked for 68... so the stats above seem to include sacks as negative passing yards. I don't know if a team has ever passed for negative yards BEFORE taking out the sacks...

They don't have any stats on the longest negative passing play on the NFL site - I'll bet that Nate is close to a record there...
