*NBA THREAD* Abe will be missed (3 Viewers)

Billups has threatened to retire if he's claimed, presumably so he can join Miami.
It's a good thing he's a basketball player and not someone who has to think for a living. The move here is to threaten to show up and tank if he's claimed. If he's just going to retire, he should get claimed by every team who has a shot to be competitive just so the Heat can't have him.

Man, I feel terrible for Lamar and Pau. Reading Pau's quotes after practice today is sad, he wants to stay so bad.

Kevin Martin on the other hand is saying he wants it to go through. He said something like, they don't want me here, I want to leave.

"Seems to me that only way this deal could be revised is to put Bynum in for Odom and send Okafor back to Lakers."

From Hollinger. Fwiw.

Have to think out of all the teams mentioned, the Nets offer the Magic the best player they can get for Howard in Brook Lopez. And then they have to get rid of one of their overpriced players in the deal (Turkaglu or Reddick). Amnesty Arenas. Pick up a couple picks in next years deep draft class, and they are in business. The key to the rebuild is shedding some of their ridiculous contracts.

Bynum > Lopez. Arenas has already been amnestied. Smith's priority should be to ensure he gets a young, talented all-star caliber big man in return for Howard, while also ridding himself of Hedo's albatross. That's why the Lakers refused to include Bynum in the CP3 trade, and why they refused to take on the Okafor contract when their frontcourt is almost bare by trading Pau and Lamar. Not sure it will go down, but it fits perfectly.

And now the Orlando Sentinel is reporting that Smith says Howard has requested a trade.

Welcome to SoCal D12!!!!

Dwight Howard has requested a trade to the Mavericks.
Is this legit? If so, what could they possibly have to offer. I can't think of one good young player on their team.
Here is everybody currently on their roster.Dirk NowitzkiJason TerryJason KiddShawn MarionBrendan HaywoodCorey BrewerRudy FernandezRodrigue BeauboisDominique JonesIan MahinmiIf you are trading Howard, Fernandez and Beaubois are the only guys you would even want include, but those are more along the lines of the throw ins you would expect after getting a young stud and a couple first rounds, not the headliners to the trade. No ####### way they'll end up with Howard. Better the the Magic to bench Howard for 66 games out of spite than to take that trash for him.

the Mavs received a 12 million dollar trade exception in the Chandler sign and trade. That may help in acquiring Howard if it happens.
But it would take much more than that. This is Dwight Howard we're talking about, not Al Jefferson.

The report I read had the trade exception being used primarily to take on the contract of Turkoglu. I'm not sure how it would all work but apparently it's doable or it wouldn't be being reported as a possibility.

I think most would agree that Bynum is more talented than Lopez (along with pretty much every other young C in the league). But Bynum's talent and his value are very different things.

I think Bynum with healthy knees is a great player. He doesn't have healthy knees. I would rather have Lopez and the picks that were speculated than Bynum.Deron Williams and Dwight Howard is a pretty solid combo for the Nets.

Being doable and being realistic are two different things.

I think Lopez may be more talented than Bynum, but he doesn't appear to be a hard worker. Without looking I would guess they are the same age, so that's a wash. So, if you are looking at the two of them you are comparing a lazy young big with lots of talent and a small contract to an all around young talented big with a maturity problem and 40 year old man knees. Bynum is high risk - high reward, Lopez is low risk - slightly lower reward.

Of course. I was just responding to a post that asked what they had to offer, not whether what they had to offer was going to be good enough. My only point is that it can be done.

The only way he comes to Dallas is if Orlando is playing for money and not a specific player. Kidd, Marion, and Terry are about $30 million in expiring contracts - I think Marion ends next year though. Add in the trade exception and 3 years worth of firsts, and it's POSSIBLE - too bad they amnestied Gilbert because I think with the TE and those three we could have taken Gilbert AND Hedo for them.

Incredibly unlikely and only possible if you're a total Mavs fan who would take D12 1st overall if you redrafted the league and desperately want him, but possible. ;)

Let's assume the gasol trade happens.

Houston give gasol and a first to orlando

Dalla gives Haywood and a pick to houston.

Orlando gives howard to Dallas.

Add in some picks and bit players and houston is below the cap and can play all their young dudes.

 Dallas gives up Haywood and a pick and gets Howard? :loco:

 About as sensible as Bynum for Howard.
Oh lordy. You can't get away with posts like this in THIS thread. Wishing you the best.

I was just making the point that Houston is shedding age. Bringing in gasol to play with a bunch of 25 year olds is odd. Maybe they plan to move him...

"The Los Angeles Lakers have pulled out of the three-team deal with New Orleans and Houston that would have landed Chris Paul in L.A., according to sources close to the talks.

The reason for the Lakers' withdrawal was not immediately known."

What a crazy series of events this trade has been.
