*NBA THREAD* Abe will be missed (6 Viewers)

More terrible news, Brandon Roy is retiring.
Not terrible news for the Blazers. Major cap relief.
This isn't even close to bad news for the Blazers.Roy cost a fortune, couldn't contribute (once the knees were gone), and forced them to scrabble to find enough minutes for Batum. Many Blazer problems solved all at once, here. Batum set for a mega-huge breakout year.
Terrible news for NBA fans.
I don't see it. You'd hate to lose the Roy of 2-3 years ago so suddenly. But the Roy of today offers nothing to people who are fans of the game. Just the reality of pro athletics, I guess.Confident "NBA fans" are going to love the new-look Blazers.(ETA: None of which is meant to diminish the amazing playoff performance from Roy still lurking in recent memory. But if you watched the team, it was obvious those moments were heading toward extinction anyway. And with this news, it's even more obvious that they sure weren't getting more frequent from here on out. Glad he left us with that one.)
:banned: to those new-look Blazers. And that's despite Batum not yet experiencing the coming-out party I expected in the wake of the Roy retirement.
Great call  Though how does the retirement of Roy equate to a coming out party for Batum? He hasn't transitioned over to the 2 yet and is finding it hard to get minutes behind Wallace...
Well,1. Old, decrepit Roy was seeing a lot of time at pseudo-3 anyway, when Matthews started to heat up.2. All the talk of the new faster-paced Blazers, combined with an ancient Camby, and I was imagining a lot more of the small ball lineup with Felton, Matthews, Batum, Wallace at the 4, and LA at C.3. Given how he tore up the Euroleague, I figured he'd be one of the few guys able to hit the ground running with an abbreviated camp, and combined with #1 and #2 above, he'd probably force his way into more minutes in all scenarios.I guess for me, the major surprise is that they ARE playing more up-tempo, yet Camby is hanging tough all the same. Since it's tough to justify keeping Aldridge or Wallace off the floor, the minutes just haven't materialized. Just a bit of a surprise to me.

Is there a Heat beat reporter besides Windhorst that I should be following on Twitter? This Wade injury is tough to track with all these GTD's.

Anyone else on Twitter that is really dialed into the nightly injury scene or posts of starting lineups as they come in?

edit: And within a minute...Windy posted Wade is out. I guess he is my guy lol. But I'd still like to know about the second question...

If you're Dwight Howard, did you really not spend the entire lockout just shooting free throws? Isn't that what you'd do? Even making it to 75% from the line probably bumps you up 3-4 ppg...

Kwame is is actually a decent NBA big man. He's not living up to the draft status and has terrible hands, but he plays pretty mean post D.He's doing some work on Tim Duncan tonight.

Kev when you want the money for our Knicks v. Nuggs bet?

Brutal brutal loss tonight, absolute embarrassment. Hope Douglas is cut and Mike Antoni (no D) is fired asap.

I still cant believe the amount of 3's Douglas takes with 15 on shot clock and has open teamates but decides wtf I will chuck it. HOW THE F CAN A COACH ALLOW TONEY DOUGLAS 6.4 THREES A GAME!!!

The past two years his post D and effort have been pretty damn good. He's not a starter but he has value to an NBA team. He's same level as a Joel Anthony/Brandon Haywood.

Derozan learned how to shoot the 3 this summer. 10 for 16 on the year

I've watched Irving play twice... . Hopefully for the Cavs sake he gets a little better. Not seeing what made him the number 1 pick. Yes he's quick... but his shot looks ugly and his passing hasn't been that impressive. Maybe it was just two off games but you should do a little better offensively vs Calderon than 5/25.

Man Warriors lose a tough one against the Spurs.

Good news: They played very good D after a crappy game in Pho.

Bad news: Curry tweaked his ankle AGAIN. Lacob needs to buy this guy the best ankle brace money can buy.

Mavs get another win. Maybe ti was just the Suns sucking, but for the first time this year Lamar Odom looked like he knew how to play basketball. When he, Vince, and West gel, plus they learn how to play with the mismatch lineup, it'll be a sight to see.

Terry

Vince/Lamar/Marion

Vince/Lamar/Marion

Dirk

Haywood/Mahinmi

I'd like to see Carlisle experiment with a lineup of:

Odom

Vince

Marion

Dirk

Haywood/Mahinmi

Nuggets fans are laughing at the Knicks fans.
Why?
It's probably unfair to describe it as "laughing at Knicks fans".How about, "Nuggets fans are very, very pleased with both their immediate and long-term outlooks, thanks to a roster that features 2 former Knicks (plus 3 other players acquired through trades of former Knicks), along with New York's 1st round picks in 2014 and possibly 2016 (not lottery protected!), and $3 million of New York's money -- all for a player who was going to leave via free agency in 4 months, anyway!"If the Nuggets end up getting 2 lottery picks from New York, you can bet their fans will be laughing at Knicks fans. Heck, the whole world will be laughing at them.
You nuggets fans still bitter about losing Melo? You ended up with Felton subsequently traded for A. Miller who is relatively close in talent to Billups who was in deal. Got Wilson Chandler who is in China not with team, have Gallo who has already blown 1-2 games this year and then Mozgov and the off chance that in 2014 the first round pick might be lottery and the same for ability to swap picks in 2016. Congrats man. Not exactly a haul like you describe and I think Knicks mgmt and fans would make this deal again in a heartbeat.

dude stop hating on Nuggs fans. Gallo is a solid player and Wilson Chandler is a real good 6th man. They didnt get a great haul but did ok considering the situation they were in.

I'm sorry, the Nuggets absolutely thrashed the Knicks in that deal.

About the Raptors, after Bargs and maybe Derozen, do they have even one player who is above average? Rasual Butler and CO were taking real minutes. I know Knicks have about 14 players below average but at least they have some stars.
Calderon probably is. But after that, no. A bunch of bums for the most part. Funny how with such a bad team they still went into NY and got the win on the tail end of a back to back.ETA: Come to think of it, I probably take 90% of the Raptors team over the Knicks outside of Melo, Amare and Chandler.

PG: Bayless >>> Bibby, Douglas (we'll see what Baron shows up)

SG: Barbosa >>> Fields, Shumpert

SF: Ugg... no winners here.

PF: Davis >>> Jeffries, Hunter

C: Johnson, Magloire >>> Jordan, Harrellson ( :lmao: )
Shumpert is gonna be an All-Star before he is done. No way is Barbosa better than Shumpert. Agree on all other players.

The experience of watching a Wizards game is hard to describe. Funny, of course, but also with a sense of resignation and sadness bubbling up to the surface. It also raises existential questions. Feels a lot like watching an episode of Louie, except that you know what's going to happen. So maybe like watching a rerun of Louie.

Anyway, I strongly recommend it. They've got two more games before the free League Pass expires. You'll laugh, you'll cry, and by the end of it you'll feel a lot better about your team.

Denver had 12 players that scored more than 6 points last night. Granted it was against the Kings, but this team is having lots of fun. Harrington might be a most improved player candidate with the way he is playing.

Why would Nugget fans be bitter about losing Melo? We are the team that's 5-2 not the team that is 2-4.

As frustrating as it is to watch now I'd rather be in the Wizards' position than a lot of other teams. Any idea when Vesely will play?

He dressed last night. I get the impression that they don't trust him out on the court at all. I didn't watch much of the preseason games but from what I gathered on Twitter and from the beat guys he looks completely lost on the court.Part of the amusement/frustration is knowing that they have above-average talent in the starting lineup at the 1 and the 5, the two toughest spots to fill in the NBA. The defensive lapses are nothing new in DC, but the offense is so bad it's just remarkable to see. It literally looks like a bad pickup game when they're in the half court on offense. They pass it once or twice around the perimeter, and then someone decides they're gonna shoot, and they either fire up a jumper or try to take it to the rack no matter what, and that's the end of the possession. It's like watching a real live version of what the NBA haters think the NBA is like. Wall is a little better, but his jumper scares nobody. Defenders play so far off of him it almost seems insulting. Hard to blow past a guy who's already halfway between you and the basket.

I can confirm all these thoughts. :lmao: It is without a doubt the worst team I have ever seen from this organization.

The Sacramento Kings have to be the least fun team in the history of the NBA to play on. All four guards that get playing time (Evans, Thornton, Jimmer and Isaiah Thomas) have absolutely zero interest in passing. Its absolutely incredible, one of those four will bring the ball up the court, usually pass to the other one and he'll attack the hoop or take an ill-advised long jumper. On the off chance anybody in the front court gets the ball (usually on a post up 12-15 feet from the hoop) they turn around and take a fading jumper. The leading assist getter on the team is Evans who is averaging 3 assists per game, I've never seen anything quite like it.

I think cutting Billups for Chandler may have been a big mistake.

Yup. A better coach should be able to get more out of these guys but it's a poorly constructed backcourt. I give Westphal another two weeks, max.

Westphal isn't doing them any favors, but they have 4 selfish shooting guards that parade as point guards and that would kill any coach. They could really use a cheap pass first, jump shooting PG like Ridnour. Maybe something along the lines of Ridnour and Wesley Johnson for Thornton trade?

Hey look! The rockets have three good players and nothing else (again this year)! :wall:
:kicksrock:I know. This season is going to be painful to watch as we all know this team has no real shot at anything other than being .500. Hopefully the Texans don't pull a Kubiak v. Cinci. I need some quality local sport in my life for at least another week.

The Clips hammered Houston last night. So many lobs. I don't think Paul could have landed in a better place in terms of creating video game type highlights nightly. The Rockets really need help on the inside. Dalembert looks like an oversized Gumby out there.

that's the issue. the belief that jimmer and/or evans can operate effectively as PGs in the NBA is pretty silly. thornton has always been a shooter, pure and simple. it's still early for jimmer and tyreke but the early returns are not promising. they need to do something pretty fast.

Jimmer is a willing passer, but he is not a good ball handler and is being encouraged on multiple fronts to shoot early and often. Thornton is a ball stopper but he can shoot and you can live with that at the 2. Evans has not grown his game one iota from his first day in the league - he is the guy they need to move. I wonder if Boston would be the least bit interested in an Evans based package for Rondo - Aingle really liked him before the draft. All that said, Westphal should not get let off the hook. He pushed for the addition of Salmons and he has failed to install even the most rudimentary of offenses. This whole Cousins thing reeks of him trying to throw someone else under the bus.

Absolutely not, Evans is pretty clearly a shooting guard and that would crush any hopes of the Celtics doing anything in the near future. The Kings should build around Evans at SG and Cousins, but instead they have no real point guard to pair with Evans and a half dozen combo big men that do a lot of what Cousins does. I couldn't imagine a worse system and surrounding team for either one of these guys, the entire organization should be embarrassed.

If I were in the Kings management I would be shopping everybody on the team other than Evans and Cousins for quality vets who can teach them how to play basketball. They really need a true PG who ideally would be a knock down shooter and either a center or power forward who can defend and rebound (Chuck Hayes is nice fit for this team, in a backup role). If they downgraded talent around Evans and Cousins but brought it good team players instead they would be a far superior team. Having an entire team (minus Hayes) of shoot first, all about me players is quickly destroying the potential of what Evans and Cousins could be.

I don't disagree with any of this except the Evans part. He is a one dimensional scorer (granted, it is an amazing dimension) with no J and no court vision, and little reason to believe either will develop at this point. They should be shopping him for a true distributor while he still retains value.
