It's really Mark Jackson doing good job of pulling a bunch of strings. His comments serve several purposes:1) Give the refs notice to protect his best player.
2) Fire up his players who were clearly outplayed by a more aggressive, physical Denver team.
On my phone, but if you read the Warrior player's quotes they don't sound like they're complaining. They sound pissed and ready to get back on the court.
Should be a good one tomorrow.
ETA: I personally don't think there's anything wrong with the "cheap" fouls from both teams. That's playoff basketball.

Would be stunned if Paul left. The grass wouldn't be greener. He's on a solid team in a big market.

Won't Dallas have space? ETA: posted at same time as Groovus haha.I think we can actually clear space for nearly two max deals. Only Dirk/Marion/cap holds/rookie deals I think.

They used it on Billups.
Dallas could have space if Mayo opts out (likely) and they don't resign Roddy or Collison. They'd be a shell of a team but it would probably be his best option.
ETA: They're around $37M guaranteed + caps holds.

I don't think there were any cheap fouls or plays from Denver's side. The big one that had Curry all fired up was incredibly tame.
Curry was complaining in the post game, maybe the other guys weren't but he was. And I don't think getting pissed off for the game tomorrow is going to be productive, they were pissed off last night and made dumb fouls and Curry was completely out of his game.

Honestly, it's possible that Paul + Howard each take less to come together. They'd be a shell around Dirk and those two...but so what? (I realize, total pipe dream, Marion needs to early terminate, gotta renounce rights on all FAs, Mayo probably needs to opt out...)
One of those guys could definitely come though.

And Paul would come in at something like $19-20M, giving them almost no money to put a team around Paul, Dirk, Marion, Carter and the scrubs currently on the team. That's not any better than LA.

I was thinking about this - could they not structure deals like Houston did with Lin and Asik? I haven't really delved in to their deals at all, but don't they get huge salary jumps two years into their deals?
A structure like that would be perfect with Dirk's contract ending - he's talked about staying in Dallas for less to remain competitive (not sure if he means it, but it's been said)

It isn't out of the question and if Howard and Paul agreed to it, I'm sure they could get it done. Trade Marion (and his expiring deal) + a couple 1st's for a 2nd rounder to a team with cap space. Trade Vince (expiring and cheap) for a 2nd round pick. Wouldn't be tough to get rid of Cunningham's $1.2M. That would leave them with just Dirk and his $22M. Not sure what that exactly what they'd be able to offer Howard and Paul for contracts but it would be close to max.

I don't get the rational of trading a draft pick for an expiring contract. If you have the space now, why take on dead weight to get the same space next year? I would rather have the draft pick.
With what they have on the books plus holds, they are at $42M. Not sure if they have room for either.

In this situation he is saying the Mavs would trade 1st rounders + Marion's expiring contract for a lesser draft pick. The pick the team would be giving up is necessary because every team needs to have an outgoing asset in a trade.

2nd round picks are pretty worthless. Dallas sends Vince to team X along with $3M cash and in return they get a 2nd round pick. Team X gets Carter for a year, only has to pay him $180K and then can trade him to a contender at the deadline to get a pick back. So at worst, they get Carter for less then they'd pay a d-leaguer and they lose a 2nd round pick. They could possibly get a better pick/player out of the deal if they move Carter later in the season.

Those signings were made using a very specific loophole that applies to players on certain rookie deals (for these two guys, they were coming off their second seasons, so they had a max salary allowable in their 3rd and 4th years, in the 5th years Houston gave them a massive pay raise and because of some goofy rule, they were allowed to spread the combined salary evenly). The NBA made that rule to keep something like what happened to Gilbert Arenas from happening again, after his rookie deal, he signed a contract with the Wiz that the Warriors couldn't match under the existing salary cap rules. For an average vet, there is a capped raise they can receive in every successive year (something like 7.5%, I'm not really sure) that teams are usually bound by.

Short term Dirk >>> Blake. While Blake has been improving, I don't think he'll ever be a dominant player. The better question for Paul is who would he have more confidence in building a contender around him, Dallas or LAC? Because as they sit, neither is a legitimate threat to get out of the west IMO (of course Dallas would be completely overhauled this summer). You know Cuban will go all out to win it. LAC? Not so much.
I love dirk and he will probably be better than Blake next year, but after that I'll take Blake. Dirk showed definite signs of slowing this year. Cuban is certainly better than Sterling as an owner but Cuban also has a lot more work to do.

The only play that was even intentional was the trip and all it was was a trip, and it was nothing that you wouldn't see on a half dozen screens a game. I'm not even sure I would say they played him especially physical and it was lightyears away from dirty. People are blowing this way the #### out of proportion.

Well, we will know how well Jackson did probably about 4-5 minutes into Game 6 if Denver has 2-3 quick fouls already called on them.
I have been a lifelong Nugs fan, but I like GSW with the exception of Bogut. Tomorrow's game is going to be crazy and I really hope the refs don't determine the game. If it becomes a foul-fest, it will really hurt Denver because our guys haven't been doing too well from the line.

Actually, most national media people seem to be openly mocking Jackson for whining about it.
I don't think anything said will have much influence on what happens tomorrow. If the Nuggets come out and play defense for 48 minutes, they'll win. If they play like they have in the series for all but 3 quarters yesterday's game, they'll lose.

Did you read the comments in that article? I think pretty much most people agree with you. It's a good sound bite and taking point, so it's gotten plenty of attention but if you listen... most people don't agree with Mark Jackson's comments taken at face value.Kev4029 said:

I'm not sure I get the strategy completely but I guess it makes sense to extend the game since one it hits 2:00, they can't really extend the game. Additionally, it'll be interesting to see how their offense flows after 3-4 minutes of not running a set.
