*NBA THREAD* Abe will be missed (1 Viewer)

Everyone figured that they would be super conservative with his rehab, especially since they don't care about winning games. It is a surprise that they would officially shut him down, especially since Andrews is saying good things. Tank mode is really in full effect.
Sixers' open at home against the defending champions and Allen Iverson is likely to be on-hand to announce his retirement, and they still have to have a ticket deal through Living Social. This year is going to be an epic suck-fest.
I know that no one else really cares about this, but here is the promotional photo for tonight's opener: http://info.comcast-spectacor.com/res/wellsfargo/593e25d457454fa89232e6fe54545287.png

The immortal Michael Carter-Williams is the face of the franchise right now.
well, i'll be damned.
That was awesome. Highlight of the season in game 1. Still don't think we win 20 games this year.

I didn't see the Boston game. Where was Olynk playing on the floor? He got sixteen minutes but without a single board. You would think that at 7'0" playing the four you would accidentally get at least two rebounds.

MCW with a hell of a debut!

22-7-12-9

And one turnover.
Very impressive.
I don't follow the draft that closely, but there's no way he's the 11th pick if the draft were held today, right? He provides match-up problems at PG.
So did Tyreke Evans yet the Kings had seen enough. Guy is going to fill up the stat sheet b/c the Sixers have nothing else but that last number is the most important one. Guy gets out of control and shows terrible decision making. If he stops that, there might be something here, but I don't think he is a steal, at least not yet.
His big issue was shooting. If he develops a reliable jumper he is certainly going to out perform his draft position.

The Nuggets started Lawson, Iggy, Gallo, Faried and Koufos last year, this year they are starting Lawson, Foye, Randolph (wtf?), Hickson and McGee. This year is gonna suck.
Messiah with have Faried in a Raptors jersey by the end of the year
Gallo and Faried for Gay sounds like something the new Nuggets management would do. Its fascinating that they are getting worse while adding short term and long term money.
Deal.

I'd also accept a 2nd round pick for Gay but throwing in Gallo and Faried works.

He was just kind of floating around. Based on the giant sample that I've seen of him (last night and one game in the tourney) he doesn't look long for the NBA. Kind of like a poor man's Bargnani.

Nice first game for the new look Pistons. Drummond, Monroe, and Smith combined for 55 points, 29 boards and 9 assists. They looked good doing it too. It's only one game, but I think they're going to be better playing together than a lot of people thought. Chauncey turned the clock back a bit and showed he's still got something left, besides being a nice tutor for the younger guys. Steady, veteran presence who can still shoot the 3. Short bench as only 7 guys played double figure minutes, but I imagine the rotation will be in flux for a little while. Jennings will be back soon and Datome is getting healthy and by all accounts can absolutely shoot the lights out. He'll carve out a spot once he's all the way back from the leg injury.

Really impressed with Michael Carter-Williams. I expect him to turn into a Rajon Rondo-type player for Philly.

Also hope Evan Turner tears it up this year so the Sixers can sell high at the TDL.

Tank still in effect though, I don't think Philly will win 20 games.

If Turner turns things around and shows he can play well, particularly with MCW, why would you necessarily want to sell? He's due a second conttact soon, but if he and MCW can combine for 40+ points, a dozen dimes, and a dozen rebounds a game why would you want to trade him? Not like they are going to win so many games as to not get one of the top few picks. If - big if b/c it was just one game - those two can consistently play at a high level together a player like Julius Randle with the 3rd or 4th pick would be a great add.

Evan Turner's value on the offensive end is with the ball in his hands as a point guard/forward. Without the ball, he's not good enough because he doesn't have the range you need for a 2 guard. It's why he was a horrible fit with Jrue Holliday. I also don't think he's athletic enough to defend the 2 or 3 positions on a consistent enough basis. He can be a good fantasy player, but I don't think you will win a championship with him.

Exactly.

But at least the 76ers had a real plan when they traded Jrue Holliday for Nerlins Noel and a 1st round pick.
I agree it's just one game but it was a good game and exciting to watch. I'm hoping he corrects some of the issues that plagued him in college but only time will tell.

Curry is something else. Love the fast-break 3.

Reggie Miller is still terrible at his job in case anyone was wondering.

The notion that Kobe will make the team worse when he returns is laughable. Kobe Bryant remains one of the small handful of elite basketball players on the planet.
How do you know this? He's 35 years old, coming off of a major injury. Nothing is certain.
What does timschochet's statement even means anyway? Anybody who is in the NBA is one of the small handful of elite basketball players on the planet.
Not quite

Always good to see a PG like Jamaaaal Tinsley at the bottom of the league in mph.
Pretty excited to see Al Jefferson ahead of James Harden.
The five fastest to date include two white Duke guys and an Australian from a mid-major. Six of the top eleven are white guys.

ETA: I filter everything to include guys with 15 + mpg

Tiny sample aside, I guess that does make some sense. Gotta cover a lot of ground to get from corner 3 to corner 3.

Yeah, I assume that once the sample size gets larger we'll see it's more of a style of play/hustle stat than a speed stat. Like most stats I don't think there's much value for at least another month or so. I think the passing ones will be particularly interesting to see. We've had advanced stats on scoring, rebounding and to some extent defense for a while now, but understanding passing has lagged behind IMO.

I must say I'm terribly disappointed to see Nick Young not even on the last page in passes per game. At #26 (from the bottom) on the young season.

Brian Phillips does a pretty good job of summarizing the Kendrick Perkins experience today on Grantland. Too much funny for me to post any snippets here, just read it. http://www.grantland.com/story/_/id/9910282/the-oklahoma-city-thunder-despair-kendrick-perkins
Magnificent. Highly recommend.

" Perkins is just a blight. He's a rage-colored blob hovering over a misery-colored blob on a bruise-colored background, forever." :lmao:

Kemba won the showdown of 2011 PGs. Although, Kemba has McBob and Bismack, and Kyrie doesn't. That's just not fair.

Also, I think it really sucks that CHA is going to give up that beautiful blue/orange color scheme for ####### teal and purple.

Sixers are 2-0 for the first time since 2006-2007
MCW has a lot of potential. Took it to Wall down the stretch. This is a much better squad than we thought in the preseason. That said, Thad Young had huge mismatches all night and that's the biggest reason they won. Evan Turner was also taking advantage of Beal's softness. Washington should be so much better. They have interesting pieces, but they literally run no offense. You can't get away with that in today's NBA. Wall doesn't have the bball IQ and/or experience to make up for the lack of scheme unfortunately. They need a X's and O's coach in the worst way.

For you older guys, when you think of Artis Gilmore, do you picture him with the Bulls or the Spurs?

That's a tough one for me. He spent roughly the same amount of time with each club.

T. Evans through 2 games:

23min. off bench, 2-8 for 4 pts, 3 ast., 3TO

17min. off bench, 0-4 for 0 pts, 3 ast., 2 TO

Only two games but 4/44mill to be a role player? Never made sense.

Always think of him sitting on the bench next to Ken Reeves.
I wish I could have wagered one million dollars on that being your answer. :)

I still think it's unfathomable that someone with a doughy body and zero foot speed like Reeves would be on an NBA roster. If he played Artis 1-on-1 to 100, Reeves would never score.
