Mike had some clunkers. Rarely in the sort of 3-1 up situation where the coach could say, "you know what, Mike, we don't really need you to put up 30 bad looking shots tonight, so let's just take a breather, huh?"

Likewise, I'm not sure Lebron ever had a string of games against a conference opponent where he went 10-27, 12-32, and 3-18. :shrug: That's okay, Mike followed that string up by hanging 54 on the Knicks. He was a great player, no doubt. He closed that series out with an epic 8-24 showing. The Bulls won anyway.

In that same vein, I'm not all that down on Lebron for his poor series against the Spurs when he was a young kid playing with the Cavs, especially when Mike's first six years of finals box scores looked like this:

1984-85: DNP, eliminated

1985-86: DNP, eliminated

1986-87: DNP, eliminated

1987-88: DNP, eliminated

1988-89: DNP, eliminated

1989-90: DNP, eliminated

Jordan's still the GOAT in my book, but it ain't because he never played badly. He did. He had lots of poor games. But he had lots more good-to-great ones, and came up biggest on the biggest stages. Props. Last night wasn't the biggest stage. It was minor, and Lebron came up small. As long as he's still on run of MVP-caliber seasons topped off with title runs, he gets less than no flack for it, IMO.

Also, in that 3-18 game MJ went to the line 17 times and made 16 of them, so it wasn't quite as bad. Lebron went to the line 20 times in the entire Mavericks series, and only made 12 of them...

He had 5 boards, 8 assists, 4 steals and 3 blocks and was +29 in the 5-16 game, a 24 point win for the Cavs. Not really sure you should count that one as a stinker.

Same goes for the 6 boards, 13 assists (!) 3 steals, 2 blocks and +15 in an 11 point win where he shot 7-20.

Point was that Lebron shot that poorly against a conference opponent, like Freelove suggested he hadn't. If we want to bring in other stats, Jordan had 11 assists, 8 boards, 2 steals, and 2 blocks in the 3-18 game, to go along with his 16 of 17 free throws made. And the Bulls won by 20.

He didn't have a sub 15 GmSc, like Lebron did a couple times in the series I linked. And he certainly didn't come close to having a negative GmSc like Lebron did in the first game of that series (his 2-18).

I don't want guys that will take shots from MJ and can play great defense.

I suppose Shaq could be used over Hakeem, but I love the mobility and shot blocking tandem of KG & Hakeem. I also don't like Isaiah over Stockton for this squad as he was more of a scoring PG. Would love to have Magic, but he is not worth $3 more.

I have done some further looking into it and while I still like my initial reaction, here is another run that could be a better squad:

PG - Stockton

SG - MJ

SF - Larry

PF - Duncan

C - Hakeem

I think the jump from KG to Duncan is more valuable than the dropoff from LeBron to Larry. I really wanted to find a way to get Wilt in there, but couldn't justify the drop in $2 somewhere else. I considered Frazier a few times, but his lack of assist production just felt wrong with great scorers like MJ & Larry...I need a distributor for those two and the dropoff in defense from Frazier to Stockton isn't too bad. Hakeem's defensive dominance made it an easier decision (2x DPOY, 9x All-D). He and Duncan can control the paint while Larry and MJ do the scoring. I have great balance in scoring, rebounding and defense.

I'd rather go with your original selection. Duncan is a better player than Garnett, but Garnett is the superior fit here as he complements Olajuwon better offensively and defensively. And any difference between Bird and LeBron offensively is overshadowed by the significant difference on defense. I just can't pass up a defense of Olajuwon, Garnett, LeBron, and Jordan. Stockton would be the weakest, and he was a pretty good defender himself.

I think he gets the team as well but I'm pretty sure the plan was to have multiple rounds of bidding. The plan was to offer a handful of the original bidders an opportunity to submit best and finals after their initial bids. Seems like that is the case seeing how each bid amount has already been leaked to the media.

The NBA is a billion dollar business that operates mainly off of the public trust that its games are on the up and up. They aren't going to risk tens of billions of dollars to make a few extra million on one game.

You guys are complete idiots if you think the league office is rigging these games.

Saints, could you expand on your post about your preference to have Wade shooting the last shot over James? What time period are you considering this hypothetical shot be taken? '06? '13? '14? (I'm more of a Rubber Soul guy but Revolver and Rubber Soul are largely 2 chapters of the same book, IMO).

What is clutch? Is it hitting a 3 when your team is on the brink of elimination down 5 with 20 seconds left and the championship tape is on the court in preparation of the opponent celebrating? Is going into Boston down 3-2 and dropping 45/15/5 or whatever it was clutch? How about the late jumper in game 7 to go up 4 and clinch the title against the Spurs? Is clutch only the last second 3 in Golden State right before the 13-14 all star game?

I can't really comment about LeBron vs Jordan or Bird or Wilt or any other great or how absurd it is (IMO) to say definitively that one will never be better than the other when you can have no idea how LeBrons career will play out or that if LeBron doesn't win it this year or because of 2012 or leaving Cleveland or wearing a headband that he'll never be better than player X. I understand the fascination of having such a discussion but it's pointless media fodder to me, i'll let you guys enjoy that.

I'm glad James is on my team. I can't wait to see what he does tomorrow night. I really hope UD blows a kiss towards Lance at some point.
