Minnesota beat writer: @JerryZgoda

Probably the best chance for a Love trade by Thursday's draft is if the Bulls, with picks 16 and 19, step forth

@Chris_Broussard: Source: No way GState trading Klay Thompson to Minnesota or the Lakers.
Bulls seem more interested in Melo. However, if the Bulls change course, it would be something like Gibson, Butler or Dunleavy, non-guaranteed contacts as salary filler, plus picks. I guess rights to Mirotic, the future Kings pick, and future years Bulls pick could also be included but that starts to be way too much.

Love im Chicago strikes me as curious because aside from the boozer amnesty, they would need to move Gibson too, right? He's too valuable to keep coming off the bench. Plus Noah plays on the high post which means that much of their offense would have no one down low. Seems odd. If you roll with rose, butler, Noah, and love then trade Gibson to...Denver dor the 11 and flip that for afflalo? That's a strong team for sure.

Denver has enough mediocre power forwards. I don't think Gibson could even pull a late 1st rounder, certainly not a lottery pick.

The Melo interest messes this all up but if you take that out... any Love trade would have to include Boozer or Gibson so salaries would be close. If the Wolves would take Boozer, the Bulls would be much more interested. That would suck for Gibson's minutes, but he still could be in the 3 man rotation with Love and Noah. You're right, Gibson could be traded too. In my opinion, he has a bargain contract so the Bulls could get an asset(s) for him if they go that direction. Noah playing the high post had a lot to do with the Bulls having a ####ty offense and not having other options. His offensive role would diminish if the Bulls had better options.

Planning on reading 3 books that have come out fairly recently regarding the NBA:

The Rivalry, about Wilt Chamberlain and Bill Russell

Showtime, about the 1980s Los Angeles Lakers

Jordan: A Biography- A new bio of Michael that just came out.

Tim, if you were the Lakers' GM, what would be your plan for the off-season?

When John McKay was the head coach of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, he was asked one week what he thought about the team's execution. He said, "I'm all for it."

If they were allowing bets on Melo leaving the Knicks, I would wager every penny I own on that. No chance he stays with Knicks. Roster is depleted of assets, no draft pick this year. Melo turning 30, cant just waste a full year when he got like 3 or 4 peak years left.

Funny thing is I really think that Barngani trade (said this at the time) was the nail in the coffin for keeping Melo in NY. In that deal the Knicks were indebted to Barngani for 2 years 22M AND they gave up a first round pick. Early in year when Raptors were in full on sale mode, they wanted to trade Lowry for a first rounder and some fringe asset like a Shump and Knicks bailed. Only bec they had already been fleeced by Toronto earlier in that offseason. Had Knicks dealt for Lowry, Knicks make the playoffs, they can go over cap to resign Lowry and Melo likely stays since Knicks have some hope and cap room in 2015.

I'll take that bet. Up to $100 says he re-signs with the Knicks. Let me know how much. Offer expires in 24 hours.

You gotta deal my man. Paypal to the winner k? I can do 50 or 100 whatever you want. we need to iron out some kinks like he might sign with Knicks and get dealt in a sign and trade. Bet is basically on what uniform he will be wearing on Opening Day. you say 100 that he is wearing a Knicks uniform for first game, I got the Field.

Agreed. $100. I don't mean to weasel out by a sign and trade. Officially going by opening day roster is fine. However, I'm sure we'll know who won the bet by mid-July. By the way, yes, Paypal is fine.

right, if its clear he signs with Knicks to stay there then obviously you win bet, if its part of a sign and trade, I win. Not even sure if theycan sign and trade after he opted out, but what do I know.

GL!

As a New Yorker I actually hope I lose this bet as I like watching Knicks games and they will be depressing to watch without Melo next year, but as a realist, the writing has been on the wall, no way he comes back unless he solely is dong this for the money.

So this bet probably makes me happy. If he stays with the Knicks, I win $100. If he signs with the Bulls, I'll be so happy I won't care about the $100. In the signs with the Rockets or Heat, I'll be pissed, but what is the chance of that?

lol, now that we have a deal, being a Bulls fan how come you don't think they gonna get him? Amnestying boozer and dealing dunleavy won't be that difficult to clear up the cap space

I think he'll choose the max money the Knicks will end up offering.

did you think Dwight would do the same? I felt just as strongly with Dwight leaving LA as I do Melo leaving NY. the things he's been saying, if he was coming back he would be acting differently

No, I thought Dwight would go to Houston. I guess the difference is NY was Melo's chosen destination. LA wasn't Howard's.

Knowing what we know now, lets pretend Thompson was in this draft, where would he rank? Zero doubt he would be behind the top 3. I'm not sure he's even in the Exum/Smart/group of PFs tier. He's a better shooter than Harris and a better defender than either Stauskas or McBuckets, so he would be better than them. So, I think he would probably be the 10th best prospect but end up getting picked at 9 to Charlotte.
I think he'd go 4th, before taking salary considerations are taken into account. After 3, I think we're talking about some players that carry some significant risk, if you're weighing them against a guy we know can be an effective NBA player. "After 3" if we're assuming that a big who's body is falling apart from a couple years of playing basketball is somehow a remotely safe pick.

I mean, after that, we're talking about 6'3" guy that can't shoot, a guy who's only been seen playing against Australian competition, a PF that didn't dominate the B10, a 6'9" PF that might just not be big enough for his style to translate, and a tweener F without much offensive game to speak of.

Some nice prospects, but if any of those guy didn't turn out to be good NBA players, it wouldn't be shocking.

Klay being older and about make $15 mill/year probably puts him in that 9 range you speak of.
My hats off to you pollard.Interesting perspective
So we've moved on from trading Klay Thompson for K. Love to maybe Klay for the #9 pick?

Nope . We have moved on from who is in control of whats gong on (aka Love) vs what people are inconceivably thinking that the wolves have the upper hand.. I am done with this topic as I am going to pour myself a good GT and relax with my Thai wife and forget about you Loon's for a while.

In the least surprising news of the offseason, Melo is opting out of his contract.
A couple of months ago, I remember giving the odds of Melo playing on different teams something like this: Knicks 96%, Bulls 2%, Lakers 1%, others 1%. Now I'll go with: Knicks 60%, Bulls 20%, Rockets 10%, Heat 5%, others 5%.Edit: How do you guys have it?
Bulls 40%

Knicks 38%

Rockets 20%

Heat 1%

Other 1%

I'll be shocked if he's back on the Knicks. I frankly don't think Phil really wants him back at the price he wants. Phil has every incentive of using this as a lost season and go into 2015 FA with a clean slate and a relatively high draft pick. The sign and trade with Chicago also makes a too much sense. Get a piece and Boozer's expiring.

BURN!

Anyone ever been to a draft party that teams put on? Thinking of going over to the Hornets party with a buddy since I have Friday off and want to see if they have the new jerseys for sale...

Melo to the Bulls is my bet. Instant contender granted Rose comes back at least to 75% of what he was. He is a true missing piece to an already great defensive team lacking any kind of consistent all star scorer.

But Rose must come back of course and be effective. He is still very young so I imagine he will be able to put the last two years behind him. But how effective can he be after two tough injuries in consecutive years?

Based on what is circling locally the Cavs won't be trading the pick unless they are completely blown away, which is very unlikely. Blatt being a guy that takes pride in getting the most out of his guys is probably leaning towards the guy with more upside, Wiggins.

Never been, but I'm jealous.

If you go, I'd make sure to bring some sort of protection in case the Hornets don't take Stauskas. It seems like 80% of fans are just assuming he's a Hornet.

The riots will start before Silver can get to the "Mc" in Doug McDermott.

Anyone ever been to a draft party that teams put on? Thinking of going over to the Hornets party with a buddy since I have Friday off and want to see if they have the new jerseys for sale...

LOL. Being from that area, I can only imagine how horrified that fan base will be if they bring in Ad Mo 2.0.

Well that's that for his lottery chances.Starting to sound a little too Fran Vazquez-ish for me.
He won't slip too far. He makes a ton of sense for someone like the Bulls or Phoenix with multiple first round picks and seemingly not enough roster spots.
Seems like the Spurs would happily collect him if he falls.
You'd think other teams would start to get wise and start doing this....

The Bulls have done it which is why I doubt he slips past them at 16 or 19.

Went to plenty of Heats draft parties....when they actually drafted players.

Was their for Glenn Rice, Steve Smith, Willie Burton, Harold Miner, and Dwayne Wade. Was also their when they took the famed Alex Kessler pick (RIP).

Always a lot of fun. The Rice Party was the best one. We knew we got a special player and him coming off that superb NCAA Tournament he played at Michigan. When we took Harold Miner the place was actually electric. Ended up being a far better virtual basketball player (the old Sega genesis EA B-Ball games) then NBA player LOL.

When we took Wade the place was going ape ####. Again we all knew we landed a special player. That was the last draft party I had ever been too. It's been so long sine we had a first rounder. Cole was a nice draft pick. But this year we have a first again. Wonder who may be there for us. Not that we draft that well.

Been to several of them for the Bucks going back to the 90's. Used to be a good time, plus everyone boos if you hate the pick. Haven't been to one recently though. Parties that stand out for me either for being fun/crowd reaction or just for other reasons were the draft parties where we took S.Marbury and traded him for Ray Allen, Vin Baker, Todd Day/Lee Mayberry, and the most classic of all drafts drafting Dirk and trading him for Tractor Traylor. If you have the chance go, you'll probably have fun.

OOOOOOOOOOFFFFFFFF

I've heard rumors the last month that Parker has packed on some pounds. Can't believe the Cavs would go down this road again with a 19-20 year old kid out of shape. I'd go Wiggins or Embiid whether he's in shape or not  Though Irving & Parker would be some nice comedy on the defensive end.

Jabari Parker may have "tanked" his workout with the Cavs over the weekend, a source told Chad Ford of ESPN.com.
The "Sorry for Jabari" tanking storyline just took an interesting turn here. Parker reportedly came into the workout weighing in at a hefty 255 pounds, which is well above his listed playing weight of 235. CBS Sports reported that the Cavs are leaning to Parker, but maybe this will dissuade them after last year's massive letdown with out-of-shape Anthony Bennett.

And Chad Ford said that Wiggins seems more than happy to play in Cleveland. It shouldn't be much of a surprise that Cleveland would be looking for a way to botch the draft through.

Too soon.

Guess Embiid's injury hurts the Sixers the most. Hinkie has shown he is willing to take a guy who will sit out the year. Apparently, they do like Exum though. I think him and MCW will struggle to coexist more than Noel/Embiid and odds are that one of Noel/Embiid doesn't pan out. But they just need talent so I guess either way, they are getting a good player.

All talk around them with the #10 pick is getting a shooter. I don't understand it. Sure, they need a shooter but much rather get one of the remaining PF's there. I guess they can't go Embiid/Saric and get nobody this year but they can get a 3 point specialist later in the 1st. I imagine they'll either move up from the 10 or trade back into the first round. Wouldn't mind James Young if he falls or someone like PJ Hairston.

Oh I think something like embid and saric is exactly what they will try and do.
