NCAA Agrees to Share Revenue with Athletes in Landmark $2.8 Billion Settlement (1 Viewer)

“ For the first time ever, some players are going to be paid directly by their schools for playing their sports—a seismic shift that will completely reshape the business model for the top end of this billion-dollar industry.

The result is the creation of a system that will give Division I schools the ability to distribute roughly $20 million a year to their athletes, said people familiar with the matter. Though a final agreement is likely months away, the NCAA’s willingness to modify its stance on athlete compensation so dramatically—after a century of treating the notion of paying players as an existential threat—signals a landmark shift.”

This was always coming, but the proof will be in the pudding. Good news though as it seems we've moved past the "baby steps" phase and are taking some real strides toward a fair and sane system for big-revenue college athletics.

Haven't read into this at all, but it will be interesting to see how title IX is handled with this.

Is it just a straight split of revenue among all athletes? If not, how do they get away with paying the Football players but not the women's Field Hockey team?

Just like how the WNBA players get paid peanuts compared to the NBA. Because NBA brings in exponentially more money to the system.

Wouldn’t be hard at all to figure out percentage of revenue for each sport to the school and then apply that same percentage of the $20M fund to each sport. Recalculate it every year when new $20M fund available. The mores success your team has that year, the higher percentage of the funds you get the next year.

If football brings in 70% of the sporting revenue to that school then they get $14M to spend on football athletes.

But the issue is title ix.

For the same reasons thst schools have to give out an even number of male and female athletic scholarships....these payouts will likely have to be even as well.

The articles specifically state its “revenue sharing”. Scholarships have nothing to do with revenue.

No person in the United States shall, on the basis of sex, be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of , or be subjected to discrimination under any education program or activity receiving Federal financial assistance.

That will be the argument

NIL is available to the individual athletes so football players at XYZU can add to their coffers while field hockey players can rely on the scholarship/revenue sharing allowance.

Plus, the Offdee Consortium is free to allot NIL to whatever program teams they choose so open the wallet and feed the football players.

It’s pretty well established at this point. I doubt anybody challenges it. This is why NIL still will flourish.

If you think parents are crazy about youth sports now, this it is only the start. "I know you are only in 5th grade but start lifting and training to get that check in college" "I know dad but I only weigh 75lbs, how can I get to a shredded 220?"
Sadly I agree, we did it just so my kid had a chance to enjoy college athletics

Pete Thamel on Pat McAfee show right now saying still TBD on the percentage of revenue or equal distribution to all sports. Said average is 85% of revenue is football at most power 5 schools which would be $17M of the $20M pot.

I can't see any school shoveling more money at football and since the revenue is a share to the school not to a specific program hard to see a work around title IX as has been brought up earlier.
