Hurley is sticking with Rhode Island over Rutgers, BTW.

I actually wouldn't be surprised if our AD kicked the tires on Dawkins, which is why I was asking Instinctive about his perceived shortcomings yesterday.

@celebrityhottub: Michigan-Tulsa is starting to feel like one of those pickup games where everyone agrees midway through we can just play first to 15, not 21.

I have watched exactly zero college basketball games that do not involve Wichita State this year. What upsets am I supposed to be picking?

Basically Michigan gets in over them because they are in the Big Ten.  Despite three times as many opportunities against Top 50 wins, they still only won the same number of games.
UPDATE:  Michigan won first game in the NCAA, St. Bon ousted first game.  Looks like they got that part at least right.  Now Tulsa getting in over Monmouth is still questionable.

Most of the first half was not pretty.  But Michigan still got a 'W' in the tourney.  Playing like that they will get smoked by ND, but if they step up and play like they did against IU, it will at least be a game.

Stony Brook could get murdered by UK, but I also think the UK could certainly be inconsistent and Stony Brook is a good team.

Iona-Iowa St. should be really up and down and I think Iowa St. may be a bit overrated, so Iona seems like a good play.

VCU in a mild upset over Oregon St.  VCU is playing well now.

I'm always amazed how when I see these kids play in person, they look small and young.  But I see the same kids play on TV and they look big and old.

I had a feeling Holy Cross would win that game.  What I didn't know was that they'd do so with their best player having a bad game.  If that Malakhi Alexander kid can play a good game, they could give Oregon some fits.  Obviously, I still think Oregon wins, but they could make a game out of this one.  At least for a while.

VCU is favored by 4.5

Not at all.  This case for St. Bonn getting the nod over Michigan was not good and the tourney results support it.
Wait so anyone that loses didn't deserve a bid and anyone that wins did?  Brilliant logic.  Motivation and match ups don't matter? Michigan proved themselves by beating what every expert considered to be an NIT 4 seed and barely beat them at that?  Okay guy.

While Michigan's win doesn't seem like much, when paired with St. Bonaventure losing in the first round of NIT it seems a bit more legit.

But the Bonnies were probably really flat after getting jobbed out of the tourney so the results really don't mean squat.

BUT, BUT, BUT, they're Meechigan

Um, I think that we all know that whatever happened most recently is the most relevant event.  Get with it.

Cal's starting point guard and top scorer broke his hand in practice, their assistant coach was just fired for sexual harassment, and their head coach is under investigation as well for the same thing.  It hasn't been a good week for Cal basketball.

I disagree that results in the tournaments validate or invalidate the selections.  IMO, the idea isn't to pick the teams that will perform best in the tournament, but rather to reward the teams that "accomplished the most during the season".  To use a non-Michigan example, Monmouth either did more than Syracuse up until 3/13 or they didn't, regardless of what happens this week.

well, crap, wish I had seen this earlier.

I'm your huckleberry.  I'm not too familiar with Baylor, but I am very familiar with Yale, and I think they're in trouble here.  They're gonna be a popular pick because the Ken Pom numbers have it as a 3 point game and Yale is on a serious roll, as you say. But this is a nightmare matchup. Yale's offense is built for Ivy League games.  They get into the half court and have two dominant low post scorers who command double teams. When the doubles are slow or don't come at all, those guys get whatever they want. If the double comes quickly they kick it out for a three, and if there's a miss Yale gets the offensive rebound as often as not. It's an almost perfect system when you're going against man to man defenses and Ivy League big men who are simply outclassed, but it's not gonna work against Baylor's zone and their quality big men who can probably handle Yale's two-headed post monster and who also rebound incredibly well. The other problem is that Yale is turnover prone, steals in particular, thanks to all that inside-out passing and some general sloppiness, and Baylor is 15th in the NCAA in steal %. It's a rough, rough matchup for Yale.

If you're in a bracket that gives bonus points for upset picks they might be worth the risk if the reward is big enough but I definitely wouldn't take Yale in a standard bracket hoping to get a leg up.  I wish it were not so, but it's hard to ignore the matchup issues.
Stuck with my guns, nice upset win (my bracket rewards those)

Purdue f'd me tho, had them Sweet 16.

Either Yale was able to stem their usual turnover-prone tendencies or Baylor wasn't up to their usual turnover-creating levels. Also I should probably have mentioned that even though I watched like 15-20 games I'm also one of those miserable sports fans who always expects the worst.  Glad it worked out for you.

Honestly, I almost certainly would have picked Yale had it not been for your post.  Expect a lawsuit soon.  I've got Brian Burke's lawyer on retainer.

Pac-12 crapping all over themselves.  Somewhere out there I hope Lhucks is being lambasted on a message board.  No longer sure of my Ducks' chances now.  Egads.

Never listen to a grumpy sports pessimist. Although in my defense I did say that they were a decent pick in brackets that reward upsets.

I like the matchup with Duke much better than the matchup with Baylor.  Not enough to like them straight up, but that +6 line is appealing.  Pomeroy has it 73-71.

At what point does the Vanderbilt administration say enough is enough with Kevin Stallings? What's it been - one Sweet 16 in 15 years?

Very frusrating.

ETA: 0 SEC titles (a mediocre Big 5 conference) and 1 Sweet 16 in 15 damn years. And Vanderbilt seems completely damn fine with him.
Stallings has reported talked to St. Louis about their vacancy.

Stephen F. Austin coach Brad Underwood is now the coach at Oklahoma St.  Was wondering whether he would leave and/or SFA could make a jump up in conference.

Dayton fans nervous about Pitt making a run at Archie Miller now that Dixon has left.

The Pokes needed to move fast and show up with a dump truck full of money.  Underwood played for Jack Hartman at K-State, was an assistant there under Frank Martin, and actually wanted the job.  But Bruce Weber has three seasons left on his contract, and I don't know if there's specific buyout language in it or not.

ETA: after further review, Weber's buyout is $2.5MM.  Dang.  Thanks, Craig_MiamiFL!

Weber's got a couple million buyout at K-State. He's doing quite well for himself. Got a $3-5 mil buyout from Illiinois as well. Bruce's problem always has and always will be recruiting at top level programs. He can get average 4 year college players (which is perfectly ok at the mid-major level)

Still can't believe UNI lost that game.

Really looking forward this weekend's action.  I feel like regional weekend is the gem just for the diehards: opening weekend is a national event with bracket pools, Final Four Saturday is a party celebrating the season, but regional weekend is the bonus gift for the fans who follow the sport year-round.

Haven't looked at sportsbook odds, but after 30 seconds of looking at the Thursday/Friday games, it seems like UVA has the easiest road of the 1-seeds.  If you can slow Iowa State down there isn't a whole lot they can do to counter, and who's better at slowing the game down than UVA?  So they just need to play their normal game on Friday, and then it's a double-digit seed on Sunday.  However, UNC's road is deceptively easy: Indiana is pretty good for a 5-seed, but Notre Dame doesn't play any defense and Wisconsin can't score.

IMO the key to the KU/UMD game will be Robert Carter.  KU has some options to slow down Trimble, and Lucas can sacrifice offense to put all his effort into slowing down Stone, but Carter is a tough matchup for Ellis.  If KU can keep Carter off the offensive glass and run off some UMD misses, they should win comfortably.

Agreed that this weekend is the tittays.

I don't think Gonzaga or Cuse can be dismissed rightfully as being a "double digit seed", Gonzaga is legitimately good, and the SC really dinged them for being mid-major, and Cuse because they're a good team who looked utterly terrific last weekend.

That's fair.  Gonzaga and Wichita State both got a solid rogering from the TSC for being mid-major at-larges.  Really like watching Kid Sabonis play.  As for Cuse, they probably shouldn't have made the field and a lot of teams left would look utterly terrific if they got to play Middle Tennessee (too soon, Sparty?), but two easy Tournament wins are two easy Tournament wins.

ETA: Gonzaga was the auto-bid in the West Coast.  They didn't win the conference regular season title, but won the conference tournament.  Apologies to anyone misled by my original post.  Yeesh, the West Coast Conference was awful this year.
