That's fair.  Gonzaga and Wichita State both got a solid rogering from the TSC for being mid-major at-larges.  Really like watching Kid Sabonis play.  As for Cuse, they probably shouldn't have made the field and a lot of teams left would look utterly terrific if they got to play Middle Tennessee (too soon, Sparty?), but two easy Tournament wins are two easy Tournament wins.
Gonzaga got the auto-bid.  The reason they got an 11 was for their overall play during the entire season.  But if you just look at how they've played the last month or so, they're easily the equivalent of a 6 seed or better.

Kenpom trolls the hell out of the RPI. :lmao:

http://kenpom.com/blog/index.php/weblog/entry/need_scheduling_help

Hey coaches, need a hand with filling out your schedule for the the 2016-17 season? I can’t play matchmaker, but I can provide you a spreadsheet with a first cut of expected ratings for every team next season. These ratings use the same method that has produced the preseason ratings on my site in previous seasons. The projections are mostly based on the quality of returning players and previous team performance, but there is more discussion about the ingredients here.

Data provided will be a list of all 351 D-I teams with overall ranking, and national rankings in offense, defense, and tempo. In addition, for those of you that are into gaming the RPI, teams are ranked by projected conference winning percentage so you can identify opponents which may rack up plenty of wins but be relatively easy to defeat. This data can assist you in finding the type and quality of opponent you are looking for to fill out your schedule for the upcoming season and will not be shared with anyone outside the coaching community until October. Please send a message to ratings at kenpom dot com and we can discuss terms.

I agree that pretty much all of the games in the next 2 days will be intriguing.

Anyone know the times for Saturday?  Will it be like 6:00 and 8:40, like the final 4?  Can't seem to remember and didn't know anything changed anyway.

Got our coach locked in. Surprised, at least a little, that it was decided today. Not privy to the process though, so there's obviously stuff I could have missed. Thought we'd look at the UC-Irvine coach also when they finished playing (he was an assistant here for a while pre-Dawkins IIRC).

Jerod Haase has been hired, after coaching under Roy Williams and then at UAB. He'll arrive sometime this weekend or early next week. Will be very interested to see what happens!

This is is a great hire.  Haase did an awesome job at UAB and has long been thought of as a guy who could run a power conference bench.

He did play at Cal for a year.  Hope that's not a dealbreaker.  My favorite Haase trivia is he played with both Jason Kidd and Paul Pierce in college.

I'm sure it's been out of print for at least a decade, but Haase wrote a great book about his senior season at KU, "Floor Burns".  The Jayhawks were 34-2 that year, the only losses were a double-OT war at Mizzou, and getting knocked out by eventual champ Arizona in the NCAA Tournament.

Mike Dunleavy set to coach Tulane.  Of course.

Rumor has it that Lenny Wilkens wants in at North Texas and Rick Adelman will be the new coach of Rice.

Yeah. I think when it came down to him and Turner I felt like Mr. Muir had a really good idea of what we were looking for and both guys would be good fits. Was just surprised it came down today and not a few days from now. I think his family is from out here - he's from Lake Tahoe area iirc.

No joke, I just went and bought the book. $4.00 and prime shipping. Seems like a good investment. There are a bunch of used copies out there for $0.01, but then you have to pay $4 in shipping HAHA.

I'm excited to meet his staff and see where we go next season. This is my first experience of a coaching transition from the inside (I was at OU when Capel was out and Kruger came in, but not involved with program), and the office has been very different without Coach or the assistants there the last couple weeks. Will be neat to compare the vibe he brings vs. the vibe Dawkins created.

Would love to see Wright State get somebody good.

At what point does the Vanderbilt administration say enough is enough with Kevin Stallings? What's it been - one Sweet 16 in 15 years?

Very frusrating.

ETA: 0 SEC titles (a mediocre Big 5 conference) and 1 Sweet 16 in 15 damn years. And Vanderbilt seems completely damn fine with him.
Pitt has hired Stallings apparently. HALLELUJAH!

Sorry Pitt fans.

The NBA Draft process is a lot more player-friendly this year.  If a player signs with an agent, he's gone.  But if he doesn't... players have until May 25 to withdraw from the draft, can be invited to attend draft combines and workout showcases to meet with pro scouts and teams to get feedback on draft status and pro prospects, and return to school if they want.

So expect the list of underclassman declarations to be a lot bigger than usual.

The entire UK roster declared for the draft.  Excellent theater, Coach Calipari.  Don't ever change.  (no shtick; I love how he treats powe conference CBB like the business it is)

KU freshman Chieck Diallo, a McD's AA who was buried on the bench most of the year, declared but has not signed with an agent.  Diallo was expected to be a one-and-done first-rounder, but was also expected to not get his ### kicked in practice by Landen Lucas.

Not sure what to say about Wayne Selden.  He's been floating around the late first-early second range since he was a freshman and there wasn't anything new from his game this year to suggest his draft status moved a lot.  If anything, Graham breaking out took touches away from him.

Where does Brice Johnson go? Asked this in ACC thread, but I feel like he has played his way into the first round, he had been mocked as a second for most of the year.

KU junior wing Wayne Selden is turning pro.  He's told the coaching staff and players he's not coming back.  Hasn't picked out an agent yet but is shopping for one.

Gonna miss him, but I get it.  He's a late first-early second round talent, and another year of college ball isn't going to change that.  May as well start getting paid in the NBA or in Europe.

Going forward, I hope this helps KU's chances of landing wing Josh Jackson, #2 overall in the 2016 RSCI.  He's reportedly down to Arizona, Kansas, and Sparty.

even the walk-ons  :lmao:

I love Cal but not sure what to think about this one.  For the past few years, he has been lobbying to change the pre-draft rules.  Now they change them to pretty much what he was asking for, and he sends what looks like a big F - U by declaring everybody including the walk-ons, trainers, water boys, etc.

Cavanaugh has been good all year, but he's really showing his stuff tonight.  Inside, outside and now fancy mid-court dribbling.  Though I dont have too much confidence in this lead-- hope Im wrong.

As a GW and Syracuse person I cant help but wonder how of the two guys that came out of JD High School-- SU ended up with Dajuan Coleman and didnt get Cavanaugh after having two shots at him.  He transferred to GW from Wake.    ...not that Im complaining about the state of the SU's 2015-2016 season....

Travis Ford lands on his feet (or something like that) and becomes new head coach at St. Louis.  A little curious because he supposedly has 3/7.2 still coming to him from OK St. and will certainly make less than that at SLU.  Maybe he still gets the 7.2, or the offset.

KU backup wing Brannen Greene is turning pro.  He's told the coaching staff and players he's hiring an agent and leaving KU.

What an enigma this kid is.  Probably the best pure shooter Self recruited here - he was making about half his 3PTAs, and was the kind of rhythm shooter who could make a bunch in a row.  But he wasn't much of an on-ball defender or dribbler, and off the court it was one bad decision after another.  IIRC he was suspended four different times for various infractions from positive drug tests to no-showing tutoring sessions to ranting in the locker room after the game over playing time.

He's a junior who hasn't started and was not expected to start next season, and transferring and sitting a year to play one more season probably wasn't worth it.  So it's off to Europe or the D-League.

I hope he finds a good fit basketball-wise with a strong mentor in place.  He's such a great shooter there might be an NBA bench player trapped inside him, but there's some work to do.

Not sure if this is true or not, but one of the local media talking heads said if a player declares for the draft the limited contact rules between player and coach are lifted.  Normally this is a calendar where the players are only supposed to be getting two hours a week of supervised instruction by the coaches.  But this talking head was saying if a player declares they can go back to the usual 20-hour practice week schedule.  It's a measure put in to keep players on campus and attending class instead of disappearing to training facilities to prep for the combines.

If that's the case, then if all the UK players declared for the draft then they can have practice six days a week until finals.  Cal sold it as theater but really found a loophole to open practice again.  Genius.

Again, not sure if this is true or not, but if so... Well played, Cal.  Well played.

Fired coaches can double dip

So it looks like Bryce Drew is expected to be the next Vanderbilt coach.

I think that's good for Vanderbilt. He seems to have done a good job at Valpo.

If he brings his dad's coaching acumen and his brother's knack for recruiting, Vandy will be winning NCAA Tournament games in 3 years, tops.

If he reverses those roles, hope you like the NIT.

No shtick - good hire for Vandy.  Not too expensive, coaching is his family business, four Horizon regular season titles in his first five years is the resume of a guy ready to move up to a power conference.  His playing experience in the NBA and European pro leagues is a big plus, too.

Maybe it did . . .

Scott Nagy is the new Wright State coach.  Had a pretty good run at South Dakota State.  Seems like not a great move up for him, but I guess it's more money.

Other hirings of note:

Rick Stansbury at WKU

Terry Porter at Portland

Josh Pastner at Ga Tech

Donyell Marshall at Central Connecticut.

With Josh Jackson presumably at KU next season, suddenly the Champions Classic game against Duke got a lot more interesting, and the assumed KU visit to Rupp in January got a little more fun.

Would like to see Diallo come back for one more year and prove he's a player at the college level, but that doesn't seem to be in his family's plans.  So I guess it will be on Bragg and Azubuike to replace Ellis's minutes.

Definitely a scenario where you want an experienced backcourt holding it all together.  Oh look, Mason and Graham are both coming back.

Definitely a nice get for you guys.  The top of the NCAA is going to be stacked next year.

Here's the Draftexpress guys scouting the wings from NikeHoopsSummit

A total aside, but after watching the 'Nova guys go 7-11 on that re-enactment with Seth Davis, Roy looks like a bigger dope for not trying to keep the ball out of Arciciacono's hands.

Thanks for that DraftExpress link! Big fan of that site, had not seen that posting yet.

Yeah, this incoming freshman class looks strong.  It's weird taking about the seasons Duke and UK had as "off" years, but both of them crushed it on the recruiting trail for this class.  Champions Classic is going to be yet another NBA Draft 1st round preview.

KU still has a couple scholarships available, but they don't seem to be in the running for any of the top guys left.  Jarrett Allen was in play before Texas hired Shaka Smart, but now it looks like Allen will stay home and play for the Horns.  Terrance Ferguson was KU's backup plan in case Jackson went Sparty, now folks are guessing Arizona for Ferguson.

So I imagine KU will land a transfer or two.  They had success with a grad transfer a couple years ago with Tarik Black, and I doubt Jeff Withey regrets pulling out of Arizona and coming to Lawrence.

Derryck Thornton cut his transfer list to Kansas, USC, Miami, and Washington.

He's from LA, so I get why USC is on the list.
Not seeing how a player of his caliber would be serious about Washington.  Maybe he really, really likes Pearl Jam.

Surprised Duke is allowing Thornton to consider transferring to another ACC school in Miami, or a semi-regular OOC opponent in Kansas.

The ACC has a rule that transfers within conference lose a year of eligibility. I would be very surprised if Thornton transfers in conference.

Romar is a great recruiter but a terrible coach.  Not sure how he gets the talent to UW.  I would not be surprised to see sanctions on the leg humpers in the near future

Was not aware of that rule.  I think it's a good one.  And yes, that would make U of Miami less likely.  Unless Thornton thinks he's turning pro before his senior season.

BTW, I pledged to stay out of the ACC thread so I don't know if it's gotten any run over there, but Twitter user @RCCPMD is positioning as a compliance officer at a P5 school brought in to help out with the UNC investigation.  Let's just say A LOT of NC State and Duke fans hope this person's story is legit.

I am aware of RCCPMD. I buy his tweets. I am aware that many/most UNC fans don't. I think they are going to get hammered across several sports. We'll see.

welp, history repeating itself.  The NCAA is so mad at UNC, they are punishing Cleveland State (and UNC-Wilmington).
Georgia Tech had to "vacate" it's 2009 ACC Football championship because Demaryius Thomas took a watch as a gift from a former teammate, who happened to become an agent.  That's more than UNC football will get when this is all said and done.

Well, except for all of this from a few years ago:

"After a 16-month investigation, the NCAA announced its sanctions regarding the UNC football program. The Tar Heels had imposed their own sanctions, including vacating all 16 of its 2008 and 2009 football victories, a nine-scholarship reduction over the next three academic years, a $50,000 fine and two years probation.

The NCAA Comittee on Infractions hit UNC with

* Three years' probation from March 12, 2012 through March 11, 2015

* A reduction of 15 scholarships over those three years

* Postseason ban for the 2012 football season."
