Hopeful that this season doesn't end the way the first season of the streak did - a first-round exit to Bucknell.  Bucknell is leading the Patriot and projecting to a 16-seed, so it's quite possible there will be a rematch next month.

between remembering that team and reading about Vince Carter today, who was in college while I was in college,I am feeling old.

 
The next level of that feeling is when college players you vividly remember become college coaches, especially the guys who weren't superstars.  So for me it's not so much guys like Danny Manning or Steve Alford running benches; it's guys like Sean Miller, whom I certainly remember playing for Pitt back when the Big East  was on ESPN almost every night.  

After that, it's when their kids show up as college players.  Nothing as a college basketball fan made me feel as old as watching the offspring of Glen Rice and Glenn Robinson put up shots.

Or locally for me, one of Manute Bol's sons, Bol Bol (no shtick) is a sophomore at a nearby high school.  He's close to 7-feet tall.  He's tremendously skilled but word is he's a bit of a diva and won't get there.  I hope he proves them wrong.

Went down a youtube rabbit hole and ended up on the MD/Kansas Final Four tilt in 2002. Wasn't Simien on that team? It was edited by a Terps fan, so most of it was centered on Maryland. I just recalled Chris Wilcox throwing most of Drew Gooden's shots in the seats early on and it seemed Gooden went into a shell afterwards. That was a fine Kansas team that had, IIRC, had been #1 most of the year. Wilcox did a "Michael Graham in 1984 for Georgetown" thing for the Terps that year.

 
Yep, Simien was a Williams recruit and contributor to that 2002 Final Four team.  Gooden and Collison were the starting bigs, and Simien was the first big off the bench. 

ETA: the other big turning point in that KU/Maryland semifinal was the Dixon/Hinrich matchup.  Dixon was getting killed out of the gate, but bounced back after a timeout where he apparently found a phone booth and changed into his Superman suit.  Dixon crushed Hinrich the rest of the way.

#7 Stetson didn't just beat #2 NJIT, they housed them right from the opening tip, 82-67. #3 Jacksonville falls to #6 Lipscomb in a tight game that went down to the wire 92-89. Those 2 were the only legitimate threats to North Florida, and with them out of the way, it's highly unlikely that anyone but the #1 Seed takes the auto-bid. The Ospreys crushed #8 SC-Upstate 92-69, and #4 Florida-Gulf Coast had a relatively easy time with #5 Kennesaw St. 74-64. Minor upset in Patriot League action, as #9 Holy Cross nips Loyola, Md, while #7 Navy cruised past #10 Lafayette.

I don't think the author dismissing Florida Gulf Coast is a good idea.  Either way, nice to see North Florida has a clearer path to the tourney.  I hope they get a 16 seed, so maybe we'll have our first 1-16 upset.  They have the makeup of a team that can get that sort of win if the 1 seed comes in sleep walking.

 
Here's an interesting tidbit about the Atlantic Sun Conference Tournament: apparently, after each round, they don't re-seed...so in the semifinals tomorrow night, #4 Florida-Gulf Coast will visit #1 North Florida, while #7 Stetson will play at #6 Lipscomb...which, of course, guarantees that either a #7 or #6 Seed will be playing in the Championship Game...and one of North Florida/Fla.-Gulf Coast won't be...Fla.-Gulf Coast is certainly in play. I don't discount them entirely, but in the case of this particular squad, it's more the coaching than the talent, and I don't think that's enough to get them past North Florida.

North Florida is the only Team in the Conference with even a remotely respectable RPI (152). Their mascot is the Osprey, and the Team nickname is 'Birds of Trey', because they have six players hitting better than 34% from 3-point range, including 47% from Senior Guard Trent Mackey. I agree that they have a little more to them than your typical 16-Seed, and the #1 they draw would be wise to take them seriously.

Stetson's upset of NJIT really blows. The Highlanders are a great story. Really wanted them to get this bid.

Profiles of the 5 programs that have never made the NCAA tournament: The Citadel, Army, Northwestern, St. Francis (NY), and William & Mary.

William & Mary started off very strong this year, but have lost 4 in a row.  Army and Northwestern are ok, but clearly would need improbable runs in their conference tourneys to make it.

By the time I finish writing this post, it will be Thursday, March 3, and Day 3 of THE MADNESS heralds the dawn of my favorite aspect of this glorious time of year...

...WEEKDAY! DAYTIME!! BASKETBALL!!!

Because we get an early start tomorrow, might as well recap tonight, well...tonight:

In the AMERICAN EAST, the chalk won out for the most part as #1 Stony Brook, #3 Vermont and #4 New Hampshire all advance...but damned if March didn't rear it's ugly head and deliver another punch to my gut, when I'm just starting to recover from last night (NJIT).  AAUUGGHH, ALBANY!!! For those of you who don't remember last year's Conference Tournament and the story of Peter Hooley, here's a recap courtesy of Wikipedia:

On March 14, 2015 in front of a sold out SEFCU Arena, the Great Danes would defeat Stony Brook 51-50 to win their third straight conference title. The Great Danes would win the game on a three-point shot by Peter Hooley with 1.6 seconds to go. "The Shot" gained national attention because of Hooley. Hooley, a native of Australia, left the team for nearly an entire month to be with his mother who would sadly pass from colon cancer. Hooley would state after the game "When you've got angels watching, you can do anything." Because of the game winning shot, Hooley and the Great Danes received national attention, as Hooley appeared on Sports Center and CBS' Road to March Madness Show. On March 20, 2015, The Great Danes would fall to Oklahoma 69-60 in the second round of the 2015 NCAA Basketball Tournament.

Albany was gunning for their 4th straight NCAA Tournament appearance, and it's Hooley's senior year. Tough team - they showed well vs Duke, Florida and Oklahoma over the last 3 years, and I was really pulling for this kid to go dancing one more time...

In the NORTHEAST, heavily favored #1 Wagner advanced, but #2 Fairleigh Dickinson barely squeaked by St. Francis, PA, not that it should matter when the dust settles, as Wagner is the class of the League, and it's one of the weaker Leagues. In another disappointing turn of events (for me, at least), #3 Sacred Heart got bounced, which knocks out G Cane Broome, currently the #10 scorer in the nation, but they got bounced by LIU-Brooklyn, who features a unique player of their own, G Martin Hermannsson, who, in addition to averaging 15.8/4.4, hails from Iceland! As mentioned above, the futility continues for St. Francis, NY, courtesy of Mt. St. Mary's.

OVC: "Let's! Go! Peay!" More Madness: Austin Peay had no business beating, much less housing Tennessee Tech, 92-72...but they did...and they'll probably get housed in turn tomorrow by Tennessee State. I don't know when the last time Murray State was underrated, but they might be this year, as a #6. They easily dispatched Eastern Illinois tonight (last night), and draw Morehead St. tomorrow (tonight), in what might be one of the most watch-worthy games on tomorrow's Conference Tournament slate.

Maybe I just don't remember, but have there been other teams that were ineligible for postseason play, but still get to play in their conference's tourney?

There was a case in the late 1980's when the old Metro Conference had a bunch of teams on probation and let them in the post season tournament and one of them won it.  Memphis State or Louisville.  The conference was usually good enough to get multiple teams, but both were on probation, so neither could go and the league ended up getting no one in.

I think after that, most conferences started banning teams that were not eligible.  Somewhere along the way, the NCAA must have changed the rule so that the conference can pick another representative.

Well, the one thing that could have derailed North Florida, in fact, did...they were cold as ice from the field. 31%, 26% from outside, and 67% from the stripe. Digging themselves into a deep hole is something they've shot their way out of in the past, and something they've consistently done vs Conference-level competition, which isn't that great to begin with...but yesterday, they started cold, and stayed cold...on their home court, no less...the likelyhood of that happening was almost non-existent, and I lost a boatload. How about Stetson? Where did that come from? Look, I loved Gulf Coast's run a few years back, and Dooley is a heck of a Coach, but it's frustrating as hell to me that the best Teams in the Conference all crapped the bed in this Tournament. Embarrassment for the Atlantic Sun. Not that NJIT or Jacksonville would have fared any better than how I think Gulf Coast will, but it would be much more exciting to see North Florida matched up vs a 1 or 2 in a couple weeks, IMO. Oh, well...

...and how did Radford crap the bed after totally outplaying Presbyterian well into the 2nd half, in the Big South? Chalk Gardner-Webb and Longwood both advanced relatively easily. In the MAAC, no surprises either, although Quinnipiac put a scare into Rider, and Niagara/Canisius tore it up for 199 points. Sweet! In the MVC, Missouri State survived a late run from Drake...

...Austin Peay continued their surprising run through the OVC, overcoming a double-digit halftime deficit, and hitting a clutch 3 to take a very late lead that was sealed with free throws in the waning seconds. As a reward, they get #1 Belmont, well-rested from the double bye, for their 3rd game in 3 days.

As mentioned above, Patriot League #1 Seed Bucknell bit the dust, as their characteristically tough defense failed them. #3 Boston was upset, too. Both on their home courts! That is just a terrible, terrible loss for the Bison. Well, #2 Lehigh is blazing hot right now, and their path to the Dance is somewhat more clear now...

As much as I love these small conference Tournaments, and what they represent with their one-bid prizes, I'm not a big fan of big upsets at this level, because in my opinion, they negatively affect the quality of the Big Dance. I love the idea of a Cinderella making a run in the NCAA Tournament, but I'm not a fan of watching a weak team in a weak conference going on a heater now, and  and then getting their doors blown off by a Major Heavy, when a better team from within the Conference would have provided a gamer opponent.

Cal is looking very tough down the stretch.  They should have won yesterday with an 8 point lead at Arizona with 1:30 left but couged it.  They have 2 true freshman that could be lottery picks.  They have the length inside to challenge shots and play solid defense.  I wouldn't be surprised if they made it to the final 4 or lost in the first round.  Lots of potential but they can struggle away from home.

Cal definitely looked strong and they looked beastly early in the year.  Zona was deadly in the late run, though.  York's game winner was just beautiful.

 
Wichita State got a scare in the Valley quarterfinals.  They were down late in the second half to Loyola-Chicago but pulled it out.

The Shockers probably make the field without winning Arch Madness, but going out to a 15-17 team drops them down a couple seeds.  They're probably a 7 or 8 with a conference tournament win.  

Tough season for Northern Iowa.  They beat UNC at home, Iowa State on a neutral court, and at Wichita State, and they're not even close to an at-large bid.  They finished 5th in the Valley, so they're on the Wichita side of the bracket and have to play the Shockers tomorrow.

Looks like they had a really rough start in conference play, though.  I would think if they had won 3 or 4 of those, they would be right there for an at large.

They also lost to Richmond, who is such an unbelievable Jekyll and Hyde team.  (Apropos of nothing, other than my continual disbelief at the way they perform.)

 
Harvard beats Princeton on 2 free throws from a suspect foul call, the. Princeton botches the final possession.

the best Princeton can do is tie Yale now, and if Yale wins their final game, they make the tourney for the first time since 1962.

I'm guessing it also might have to do with the fact that the league only has eight teams?  Taking one out would probably really #### up the tournament.

We'll have to agree to disagree. I've watched every possession from those teams, many more than once. Anything can happen, but Zona and Utah's A-games just seem a cut above the others. If they all played their best, it wouldn't be that close.

ETA: SO yeah, they're the top 4. Not disagreeing there (although Colorado is dangerous). But the other two are closer to Colorado than to the top two.

Yeah I have watched them all plenty this season.  Cal actually has the most talent of all but they are young and don't have the best coach.  Oregon has the best coach and they owned Utah and Arizona this year.  This Arizona team is not the same level of talent it has been over the past several years.  

That said there are a number of teams that could win the pac 12 tourney.  Should be fun.

That was a fun game. It was the only time I've seen L-C play this year and they sure didn't look like a team who'd have a losing record. The white kid for WSU with the Beatle hair cut saved the Shockers' bacon, though it got a little old hearing the announcers slobber all over him.

This year it's so wide open that I think any of the top 6 Pac12 teams could make a deep run in the tourney.  I like Oregon and Cal the most, although Oregon is undersized and not very flexible in terms of lineup strategy so they could run into matchup issues.   I'd agree AZ is missing the elite NBA lottery pick talent that it almost always has.  Cal is very young and I think the sleeper of the conference.  Utah is well coached but the guard play is not what you'd want to predict a deep tournament run.  Colorado's guards are also inconsistent but IMHO they are very well coached and underrated despite their lack of guard talent.

This is as deep as the conference has ever been with 9 teams out of 12 in Lunardi's top 76.  All of these teams are battle tested.

Wichita State got a scare in the Valley quarterfinals.  They were down late in the second half to Loyola-Chicago but pulled it out.

The Shockers probably make the field without winning Arch Madness, but going out to a 15-17 team drops them down a couple seeds.  They're probably a 7 or 8 with a conference tournament win.  

Tough season for Northern Iowa.  They beat UNC at home, Iowa State on a neutral court, and at Wichita State, and they're not even close to an at-large bid.  They finished 5th in the Valley, so they're on the Wichita side of the bracket and have to play the Shockers tomorrow.
